Terrific performance of this underknown gem, in my opinion the best Goethe setting by Schubert - scorded for male voices (TTBB) and deep strings - viola, cello and bass only. Here's a translation of the poem, the painting is Caspar David Friedrich's "Flussufer im Nebel".
"The soul of man
Is like the water:
It comes from heaven,
It returns to heaven,
And down again
To earth must go,
Ever changing.
When from the high,
Sheer wall of rock
The pure stream gushes,
It sprays its lovely vapor
In billowing clouds
Towards the smooth rock,
And lightly received,

"Gesang der Geister über den Wassern" is a wonderful virtuoso Arnold Schönberg Choir to listen that one's mind transcends to a nirvana level to a point one loses conscious and becomes a mental player in reading Goethe's Song of the Spirits over Waters.' Schubert's serene music rhymes so beautifully with the poem. Nikolaus Harnoncourt does superb guidance.

Goethe's poem is utterly beautiful and full of emotion. Goethe's message about water is the quality of transparency, serenity and brilliance shown when falling from high rocks or hills. The human soul seems to have these qualities. I feel that Shubert's composition to Goethe's poem shakes the conscious of Humanity.

Descubrí esta versión del poema de Goethe que Schubert eleva a coral sinfónica, en mi primera estancia en Toulouse y me lo llevé a Brive entre los discos preferidos. Daniel haría de él un talismán oyéndolo cada vez que se sentía abrumado por el trabajo siquiátrico. Sin conocer el texto, me aseguraba que la evocación del agua le transportaba más allá de toda contingencia, devolviéndole la serenidad. Un día le transcribí el texto de Goethe y al leerlo le brotaron lágrimas de emoción, contándome hasta qué punto había sentido el poema como emanación de la música. Desde la punta de Le Croisic, cada vez que el viento soplaba sobre las olas, allí estaba el espíritu del agua llamándole.

Qu'il tombe de la haute muraille escarpée du roc, le pur rayon : alors il poudroie très doux en vagues de nuages jusqu'au rocher poli, et là, accueilli en douceur, il ondoie, léger voile, en chuchotant vers les profondeurs.
Mais si les rocs brisent sa chute, maussade il écume et tombe par degrés dans l'abîme. Dans un lit uni il glisse doux dans la vallée, et dans le calme plat de la mer toutes les constellations mirent leur face.
Le vent est de la vague le tendre bien-aimé : le vent mêle de fond en comble les flots écumants.
Ame de l'homme, que tu ressembles à l'eau ! (Goethe).

Yeah, it's on SDG. It's very much worth it for the other choral songs though, even if I think Gardiner is a bit too nervous in the Brahms Second, his rapid tempo changes feel somewhat ham-handed.

Très beau chœur. Pour moi, la meilleure version serait celle de Wolfgang Sawallisch, avec, notamment : P. Schrier * D. F. Dieskau & la Capella Bavaroise...

Am i the only one who finds it almost similar to parts of beethovens 7, 2 ?
I only know his more recent recording with the OReR and the MC that came with his (again rather disappointing) recording of Brahms' Second. It struck me as cold, sluggish and the singing - while marvelously clear - was strangely nasal. Is the older one better?
@giorgioot Hah, even my limited knowledge of Italian tells me you have no idea of how Schubert ought to be performed. There is nothing Baroque about this performance.

beh! un romantico trattato come un barocco!! sono intonati , ma mancano di peso vocale ......anche la parte veloce .....dove i bassi hanno il madrigalismo che dovrebbe riportare ai flutti ......non si sente nulla di nulla !!!!!!! beh l'effetto voluto da schubert è andato a farsi benedire .... Non ci siamo , troppe messe di voce!!! Ricordo di aver già commentato un lavoro di questo Coro ... peccato
