Awesome, I don't watch TV. I only watch Kelvin from London doing HI-FI stuff.
Me Too haHa
Splendid - nothing more satisfying than rejuvenating speakers!
I was a french polisher for many years you can gat fillers or a wax to repair the holes or deeps scrapes and the wax you can purchase can be colour matched
Beautiful job. I’m going to my attic to get my old KLH speakers.
go for it tighten the drivers bobs your uncle
We all love Kelvin 👍
brilliant video. i could watch this guy watching paint dry and be entertained (and educated)
right on! i was thinking reading the phone book but yeah!
What excellent practical advice Calvin. You are a treasure!
Steel wool.
Used to use it to clean the carbon off the obturators on the 120mm gun of my Challenger tank.
With a bottle of full fat coke to decoke the working parts.
It’s also important to keep the speakers away from strong direct sunlight.
Have to be aware that wood has to be nourished just like leather.
It’s an organic material and must be looked after.
I have seen some great wooden chassis on decks too. But very expensive!
yes I often think coke is as good as paintstripper
Kelvin, great advice there its very rewarding repairing / restoring speakers. I bought a pair of previously owned Spendor A5's floor standers with a chunk taken out of the base plate (dropped I guess) and they looked very "sore". I cleaned up the sharp edges and got some two part wood filler repaired it and blended it in with various abrasive papers and then sprayed satin black as they were originally. No one has spotted the repair so far.
Thanks for this video.
Commercial veneers are typically 0.6mm thick.I went to look at some Spendor BC3s and a previous owner had sanded through the veneer on the edges. So they either needed painting or re veneering.
A lot of speakers do need sanding however because the veneer either has bad scratches or the varnish has badly faded.Rather than sand you should use a paint stripper first and then 180 grit on a hard timber sanding block with special care to keep it flat near the cabinet edges.i have restored plenty of speakers that way.
Great job!! I love British Hi Fi gear and Brits are great people. I had a pair of Lentek SP4 speakers. They were so beautiful. The front baffle had an inscription saying they were commissioned by the Crown for Royal Albert Hall! I did a similar re-finish job on them, and like the idiot I am, ended up selling them. I wish I had all the great gear I've sold. Thanx for the video, Cheers!!
wow yes Lentek are one of the last underrated names I believe
In the US we have 0000 steel wool and I use 'Restore a Finish' in a one step process. It has a stain in it and comes in different colors like walnut, maple, etc. It kind of 'melts' the old finish and takes out scratches and light water stains. I used to restore pianos.
For non wood Wd40 or lord Sheraton leather shine on a lint free cloth, believe it or not give a good freshen up.
Even on some woods brings up the grain nice
Many thanks for another great video Kelvin.
I used teak oil on my Kef Concordes.
Very therapeutic and they sound great
Hi Kelvin, if you have more like this, keep it coming :)
Super video thanks for sharing great information and showing how easy it really is to
Thanks for watching
If your going to use wire wool make sure you either remove the drivers especially the tweeters or run a vacuum at the same time. Any loose metal wool fibres will stick to your drivers and is very difficult to remove. A scotch bright cloth works just as well.
🙋♂️THANKS KELVIN,FOR GROWING UP ⬆️ AND SHARING THIS OLD SECRET 🤫🤗💚💚💚
Perfect timing I just bought some 70’s Lowther cabinets !! Thanks Kelvin.
Enjoy!
Good tip! I’ve never used Danish oil but have used tung oil.
This Video is a good Idea for topic on this channel! Well done, and it looks good!
Great video, Kelvin 👍🏾
Great video again kelvin
Some simple protective gloves are a great investment, also for your health.
Great demo ... I've done this before ... it's very rewarding
Best Channel
Always good to polish up your stuff .all the best Kelvin
Excellent tips, great video!
I truly Adore, Spendor!
Thank you, and all the best.
Stuff works great! I’ve used Danish or Howard’s on most of my cabinet restores. Some took a couple of coats. Strip any wax first. Then 00 steel wool. Let dry for a few days between.
You bloody beaut. Those Sony 3050's I have look pants and sound great so this is perfect stuff. Thanks dude!
Mic sounds good too :) you were clipping a bit before
thanks appreciate the feed back
Thanks for the tips!
Very nice job
Always great videos, Kelvin.
Hey Kelvin, this was a really good video, man! I really appreciate being able to watch you do the legwork. I'm sure a lot of people will find this useful. Good job!
wow 😮 it looks beautiful Calvin👌thanks for the tip!!!
This was good advice. I have speakers that need exactly that treatment, but I wasn't sure what the best way would be. I was planning on a matte varnish, but that wouldn't have been good.
I've been restoring beat up Tennessee Poplar Savoy hardwood CD racks this way for the last few years. Although as mine are solid timber all the way through, I can get away with sandpaper and a paintbrush. The wood will soak up teak oil like a sponge. The worst one to date required 6 coats and took around a fortnight to finish, so I try to find ones in as good a condition as possible if I can to start with. Now all the Yanks are ditching their CD's for streaming these racks are getting more common on e-bay. I just wish the transatlantic shipping was a lot less!
Instead of just re-varnishing my Ditton 66's, I went with 'Blackboard black' for the finish.
Not only is this product cheap and easy to apply, but it had the twofold benefit of giving the 66's a much more modern look whilst greatly reducing their otherwise
over the top, visual dominance of the listening room. Splendid!
Enjoyed your video.
Nice work.
I could do this as a job all day long, so satisfying! Thanks!
I've conducted this type of renovation on both Celestion UL6s and some Castle floorstanders.
The only difference in technique was that I used matt varnish rather than oil. Ultra thin coats are essential.
The advantage that I heard and saw was a tightening of the bass particularly in the Celestions.
I put this down to the cabinets being better sealed and more rigid.
I'm not sure an oil finish would achieve the same result.
this is the therapy you need 😂
Nice tips!
Nice. Wear nitrile gloves, wear eye protection and have good ventilation or wear an effective respirator.
Yes, thanks
if you had a veneered surface in much worse nick only some solvent like acetone or lacquer thinner will get rid of the imperfections, especially sticky old glue residues. lacquer thinner does a quicker job than an isopropyl most of the times.
cheers.
Another enjoyable and informative video, I'll probably think of you as Kelvin Molt, after this....anyhoo got a feeling that babys sounding a bit light in the Bass department....
Just saying pal😂😂.
I have beautiful videos that I would like to watch❤
I have beautiful videos that I would like to watch
Thank you, I had no idea. 👍
⭐Hey Mr. Stereo X, Please try the "Artti T10" magnetic planar iem, you will never listen to your old gear again. 🤩👍
ok that's a recommendation and half
Excellent.
You can get 0000 wire wool.
Great video, Have you ever restored sun fade from a speaker cover that affected the appearance to even out the wood finish? Cheers Craig.
Brilliant as always Kelvin. Thank you. How would you polish black speakers?
Errm don’t think I would
Unfortunately a stray cat managed to sneak into our home and had a pee on the base of my left vintage loudspeaker! The stains were so bad I had to sand it down and this removed the colour from the bottom 20 cms. They look awful. I will try and stain them before using wood oil. Thankyou.
Well done! Can you also help clean my house?
Yes this will work on Teak. But my Tannoy Berkeley are walnut with real varnish on them. So they would needed to be sanded by hand with 200 or 400 grid sandpaper. Then varnished with water based Varathane with a foam brush. P.S. you are oiling the cabinets, that is Not varnishing. There’s quite a difference. Wouldn’t you say ?
I know but what does oiling mean to most people.
I kept waiting for the table to collapse.
Nice work, interesting. Can you also touch up black veneer, and what do you use for that?
Yes agree on black thanks. Would you leave veneer chips alone Kelvin.. or how might you patch them?
You can use black shoe polish to touch up marks on black veneer and vinyl veneer.
Black Vermeer I guess is more like paint ,,,,,,not sure
Great job Kelvin, but becareful sitting on the working table.
Yes, I was really worried about the open can of Danish oil on the wobbly table..
Be extra careful with Danish oil. It's very volatile and can sometimes spontaneously combust!
you mean like a drummer from spinal tap
👌👍
Nice tips thanks, I just bought a pair of b&w dm4's it has water stains and heat stains on it, what is the best way to remove these stains before applying danish oil?
I'd say you pretty much have to sand back everything to raw. Then stain and finish. Start with 120 or higher grit as you don't want deep grooves left. Start higher
Yeah deep stains need sanding and staining I agree
@@firebladeclements Thank you very much, I did the same as you said and the speakers look great, thank you
@@stereoreviewx Thank you very much, I did it and the speakers look great, thank you
Great stuff Kelvin.
Any thoughts about dangers to driver materials from the chemicals used? I see you removed the bass driver from the Spendors. Cheers
You could also use masking tape or something and cling film etc to put a cover over the drivers while you work
Truly the driver was out anyway .
You should protect really wire wool I guess is magnetic
Mind you, this only works if your wood veneer was oil finished.
I don’t feel grown up😂
Aah baht no
