  • The Lost World by Michael Crichton never REALLY got adapted into a Spielberg film. But this unmade Jurassic Park sequel would've changed everything about that had it been made. This script outline by David Koepp goes into a totally different movie that would've involved camouflaging Dinosaurs, the T.rex river raft chase and even Biosyn! Hope you all enjoy! :D

    Well it's possible that after this version of "The lost World" was released, JP3 would be the same. The controversy of letting a Rex be killed by the Spino would be even greater, since the Rex would have been astablished as even more of a threat.
    Or they would have let the Spino fight against and kill one of the camouflaging Allosaurus/Carnotaurus or even the Ceratosaurus.

    This initial adaptation of the second book is soo close to what Michael Crichton originally wrote that I find it a bit odd that David Koepp even bothered to change the names of some of the characters. The characters making up the Biosyn team in this iteration are nearly identical to Crichton's original cast in the book that I don't particularly understand why David bothered to replace the original characters. It almost feels like a change made for the sake of making a change; same with deciding to have Thorn die at the jaws of the Rexes; and with deciding change the original Carnotaurs to Allosaurs. With the draft being so faithful to the original story as it is, I think it's odd to not just keep these smaller details consistent with the book as well.

      In the "Jurassic Park Ultimate Trilogy" collection; Mr. Crichton actually stated along the lines of : "A movie should derail outward from the book. It should be it's own version. Though I'm not a fan of film adaptations that are drastically different." But I thought that excluding the disease-spreading was somewhat of a drastic change? To some degree.
      Much of that concept art and story board is featured in Ultimate Trilogy. It's a great tributary collection.

      They probably changed the name of Dodgson because the original actor, Cameron Thor, couldn’t commit, or they didn’t want to bank on it. As for the Carnotaurus, you’ve got to remember that nobody in 1995 knew what a Carnotaurus was. My guess is they wanted to go with a Dinosaur with more recognition.

    • @bobcat24
      @bobcat24 3 года назад +5

      @@kirksealls1912 Ever since Disney’s Dinosaur came out in 2000, everyone now knows what Carnotaurs are. So it could’ve worked for in 1995 if they wanted to. People will only become familiar with something if they come across it first, so might as well start somewhere.

    • @kirksealls1912
      @kirksealls1912 3 года назад +3

      Hi @@bobcat24, I'll bet you're right. There's plenty of evidence of that, even just looking at the first film. Nobody knew what a Velociraptor was, or a Dilophosaurus, and few were probably familiar with Brachiosaurus, prior to 1993.
      That having been said, I still think that was quite possibly the reasoning for going with an Allosaurus instead of a Carnotaurus, the perceived risk might not have been equal to the perceived benefit of including a dinosaur that audiences would have been excited to see included. I would argue that with any "Jurassic Park" film it's best to strike a balance between familiar dinosaurs and new ones; what would "Jurassic Park" have been without Tyrannosaurus, and Triceratops?
      As for Disney's "Dinosaur," the driving force there was probably to differentiate themselves from the competition (developing their own ultra-realistic Tyrannosaurus to compete with the "Jurassic Park" Tyrannosaurus seems like it would have been a loosing battle). Not only did they go with a Carnotaurus as the antagonist, but they went with an Iguanadon for the protagonist, a dinosaur which mostly dinosaur enthusiasts were familiar with. Without "Jurassic Park" (presuming "Dinosaur" would even have been made at all, which is another question entirely), I'd bet serious money they would have gone with a Tyrannosaurus, and Carnotaurus would be just as obscure today.

    What a missed opportunity. The Isla Nublar clean-up operation alone would be such a good starting point for a new Jurassic Park sequel, even without the second island. A team could go to the island, prepped to deal with corpses, but discover that... Something Has Survived. (Sorry, I couldn't resist.)
    Come to think of it, that movie could still be made. It would have to be set between Jurassic Park and Lost World, like a jurassic Rogue One. They could even drop in subtle hints about the existence of site B and effectively set up Lost World.

      A horror-themed dinosaur movie? Probably a good thing it didn't happen then. Spielberg was adamant about filming JP2 and I don't think he has the chops for horror; suspense, certainly, but he's always been too afraid to film anything in the dark. All his nighttime sequences have had some kind of harsh lighting on the subjects he films: like the T. rex night attack in JP; it's night, it's storming, and yet there's this ever-present, soft blue light keeping everything visible (and it wasn't the lightning doing it; there was the constant blue light with intermittent flashes of bright white light for the lightning). And then there's the night attack in TLW: storming, nighttime, but this time there's no magic blue light bathing the scene; the only light sources are the headlights from the RV and the SUV. If something is going to be scary, you have to let the audience guess at what's happening by hiding some of the action, but Spielberg isn't the type of director who'd do that; he's all show and tell.

    I’m still waiting for a AAA game in an massive dynamic island, or Islands, with weathers, day/night cycles, full of Dinos, surviving and leveling up your character skills as you explore the island and old InGen sites, labs, slowly discovering the lore and it’s purpose, finding food and resources, followers and survivors.
    A mix of Skyrim, Red Dead 2, Fallout, Far Cry, etc...
    But it’s a fun slightly realistic game where even in the end game maxed out, you never feel overpowered but you learned the behavior of the animals on the island.
    Imagine the AI realizing your strengths and weaknesses and using them against you.
    Imagine you’re level 1 sneaking and crafting, where you struggle to get past even the easiest predators, up until max levels where you can, build, set traps and capture Dinosaurs...
    But all that blood and commotion attracts other, bigger Dinosaurs...
    But you can only carry so much in your backpack before you run out of resources and have to gather, make or go back to base to get more.
    So you’re kept on your feet and not strolling through the “park” with ease...
    And that Ark game, to any comments; “wUt AbOuT ArK?!”
    Lets forget that game exists.
    I don’t think I’ll live to see a good open world survival Jurassic Park game in my life time.

    Biosyn absolutely should've been brought in much sooner into the series. In fact, Nedry says that him stealing the frozen embryos was going to save BioSyn "10 years of research". That's one of the many reasons why Fallen Kingdom didn't work for me. I find it hard to believe that by 2018 BioSyn (and other rival companies) didn't have the technology available to clone dinosaurs of their own. In Jurassic World had been open and active for 10 years, there's no way other companies jumped in the dino entertainment business. The whole action thing didn't make sense, in that context (that's without going into how unintentionally comedic and dumb the whole thing is).

  • @thedatatreader

    An unpopular opinion perhaps, but I wish we had gotten this version hands-down. I personally hated every change they made to the final film.
    Sarah Harding would have been amazing as a dual perspective on the hunters and Malcolm's group instead of Hammond learning nothing from the first film and sending her for no adequate reason.
    The T-Rex's chasing the group in water to explain why the group can avoid them yet keep the scene tense (ironically they could have kept the best scene with the coral snake but switch the rushing water from down to sideways)
    The worker village could have been something more than a bunch of old buildings with a radio, and instead a place to explore as Malcolm's team starts to get their bearings.
    It would have been amazing to see a scene with Malcolm and Grant just hanging out in a bar since they were the two most rational yet contradictory characters, so their conversation could work to drive home how each felt about the scenes from the first film and set up the transition into the second. (Instead of the "no, you!" Speech we got from Malcolm and Hammond who clearly learned nothing and made the film feel more like a frustrating retread. One scene in a bar could have changed this)
    And lastly, the tone would finally shift from Ingen just being a dumb archetype for Disney and instead focus down on Biosyn: the even more ammoral competitor who had Nedry doom the park for their embryos.

  • @shadowbeast9671
    @shadowbeast9671 3 года назад +8

    That sounds like a fantastic plot. I would not be able to choose one plot over the other really since I loved the Lost World as well. But change a few things and this could've been an excellent plot for JP3. Especially since the Lost World had Hammond publicly announcing about the island in the end and that would've given Biosyn not just knowledge of the island, but motive to go there.

    • @skezeksskybreaker5425
      @skezeksskybreaker5425 3 года назад

      I have been commenting this but I see you actually beat me to it. I too would have loved this to be repurposed for JP3. The movie would have fit the theme of the franchise much better rather then just being an isolated story that had low to no impact on the franchise. In my opinion the San Diego incident was a good for the franchise. I was thinking that the river escape scene would have been a much better way to have the Spino and the Rex face each other allowing the humans to escape. I would have liked for there to still have been 2 rexes but in that scene only one was chasing the boat on land. But then a Spino pulls the Rex into the water and kills it as you see the blood floating up. The boat goes to shore and the humans take to foot as the Spino then chases them. Not sure what the motivation would be since it has a whole Rex to feed on but whatever (maybe a similar scene to the oil fire in JP3 earlier made it want to kill the humans). As the Spino is about to kill the humans the other Rex headbutt charges the Spino knocking it on the ground and the Rex kills the Spino.
      I think this would have been way more epic and less divisive with the fandom.
      Also Biosyn tires to get away with their boat in the ocean and a Spino could annihilate the boat making it a close call of embryos or eggs getting off the island.

There’s some changes they made that I think are a lot better (like keeping the original novel death of Dodgeson) but overall I like this version more than what The Lost World ended up being.

      Agree TLW was great. Roland was a great character and it focused even more with the parent relationship with the Rex and their baby. Also I think that the San Diego incident was pivotal going forward. However I wish some of what we got was repurposed for JP3. We would have then been treated to a much more meaningful film to the overall story and themes of the franchise. Also imagine Biosyn making it off the Island by sea in a small boat with embryos or eggs only to have the Spino just annihilate their small boat almost creating Fallen Kingdoms reality 22 years earlier.

      Nedry wasn't working for InGen. He betrayed InGen. He worked for BioSyn.
      InGen were the villains in The Lost World, Jurassic Park 3 (at least it was hinted that they were) and Jurassic World.
      I'm not gonna mention Fallen Kingdom, as InGen is completely absent from the film.
      As for Dominion, BioSyn are reclaiming their throne as the true Villains of the JP series.
