Ruston Kelly is generating a buzz in the Nashville music scene. In the past two years, he has written songs for top country artists including Josh Abbott Band and Tim McGraw. As an artist, Kelly's sound embodies indie, folk, and rock that combines with his raw and honest lyrics to make for an intriguing, different sound altogether. Ruston Kelly stopped by The Attic Lounge at the storied War Memorial Auditorium to share his thoughts on his first EP, Halloween, produced by Mike Mogis (Bright Eyes, First Aid Kit, Jenny Lewis) and featuring the single "Black Magic."

He has the ability to be game changer in Nashville. Hopefully, Dying Star wakes up the execs in town. This is country music...not the Florida Georgia Lines and Luke Bryans of the world.
The execs are just giving the people what they want. Unfortunately, most people today are lazy listeners. They want familiar beats and hooks with no depth. On the bright side, there are always going to be great songwriters and performers creating truly great works of art. They may not get recognition from the masses, but they’re even more beloved by their true fans for it.
Poison is one of the best songs ever written. It works on so many levels, musically, it is raw, beautiful and painfull, all at once. Lyrically, while it appears to be about a human relationship, I think it could be about addicition, or any other bad habit that us imperfect humans continue to struggle with...

Ruston kelly writes the most relatable, moving, sincere music that has ever been written and heard.
First time I saw Ruston was at Exit In in Nashville. He opened for Marcus Foster. The Lone Bellow was there too. Tickets were $12 each. Best damn money I've ever spent! SO much talent on one night in a dark little hole in the wall on Church Street. Lifetime memories made. Thanks for that!

Kevin Meier well im not even american but i liked ruston kelly. I think ppl nowadays didnt like the cowboy,country, hard boiled lyrics style? But his songs is trully good and some didnt sounds like a country songs if some popular pop singers sings that maybe ppl wont even know at all if this a country song, especially his first song and second song(poison). Its ironic how a truly quality artist like him didnt bcm viral and some young artists with simple lyrics and repetative bcm virals.
