  • After years of trying to get his rap career off the ground, Joseph Foreman (aka Afroman) struck gold with a cautionary tale about the consequences of excessive weed smoking. “Because I Got High” began gaining traction throughout the South but once it made its way onto Napster and the Howard Stern show, it became an unlikely mainstream hit. Kevin Smith and Jason Mewes starred in the iconic music video and featured the track in their film “Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back”, and the song eventually became a #1 hit in 11 countries. VICE meets Afroman to retell the story of his perennial stoner anthem and speak to Kevin Smith about his experience being a part of taking the song sky high.

My son turned me on to this song when he was twelve, and I laughed my butt off!
Now my son is 31 and we often smoke a few bowls after dinner while watching Star Trek reruns. Back then, neither of us smoked the "Devil's Lettuce", but when I found that it reduces the pain of trigeminal neuralgia, the very painful neurological disease I have, then I started medicating with it.
Back in 2004 when my pain was off the charts, my doctor prescribed Fentanyl patch to control the pain, but that crap made me very sick. I've been prescribed anti-seizure meds that affected my memory and ability to function so adversely that I forgot how to drive a car or operate common tools. One drug caused severe allergic reaction where I had blisters all over me.
Cannabis affects memory, but nothing like the pharmaceuticals do.
My disease is a brain disorder that is related to epileptic seizures. Cannabis has proven to be an effective treatment for epilepsy. It seems to prevent most seizures from occurring or lessens the severity.
It gave me my life back!
A friend in Texas has a young daughter who is epileptic. Her seizures were so severe and frequent the poor little girl had to stop attending school. My friend read about a girl in Colorado whose epilepsy was very similar to her daughters. This girl was treated by a special strain of cannabis called Charlotte's Web, which is high-cannabidiol, low-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and doesn't make one "high" like traditional weed since it's low in THC. It's a CBD product made from hemp.
Of course, living in Texas she couldn't buy this medicine for her daughter even though it's CBD. Her daughter had a severe seizure that put her in the hospital and nearly ended her, and that was the last straw. My friend decided to move to Colorado to save her baby girl! It's working very well, and she's now attending public school, making good grades and lots of friends.

Us kids laughed as well, not knowing what its all about but just seeing the joy around this song I always remember that positive memory. I used to listen to this when I was still straight edge. It's just a song that helps you deal with stuff, it's upbeat against adversity. It's inherently adverse, it's doing something that is illegal(was illegal back then still is lots of places)to deal with life's problems. Future generations wont remember what it was like, the shame and risk it used to be to go to a party, or meet new people, and navigate around smoking. Hide behind the shed, hope you don't ask the wrong person who calls the cops, hope you don't get judged. That culture will be lost on future generations. Just getting green back in the day was dangerous. And I was a misanthrope(without it), so I had to be social and ask people for help getting something illegal. It was rough, songs like this just made it fun. made you feel more comfortable. Playing a song like this used to be a small protest, with a great beat. Still love this song. Had no idea he was such a good singer either.

I got to interview Afroman when I was in college years ago and he was great to chat with. I had called him for the interview and missed him....he called back and left a voicemail singing "I was gonna call you sooner, but then I got high!" Really cool dude.
This was one example of how the early mp3 file sharing made someone's career. Everyone had this song downloaded from Limewire or Kazaa and heard it when they wouldn't have otherwise.

I remember seeing him perform in Destin FL (I forget the name of the club, right by the beach) on 4/20/08. The outside area was a cloud of smoke, this was well before weed was any resemblance of legal in FL. The Cops were swarming that place in full force at the end of the night. Needless to say I saw him perform a few songs and dipped, I couldn't partake considering I was active duty attending EOD School at Eglin AFB down the road. I found an article online from NME by Luke Morgan Britton, describing "Afroman, real name Joseph Edgar Foreman, was playing guitar onstage when a woman approached him from behind and danced against him, at which point he turned around and punched her with his right hand.". Not saying that he should've punched her, but I think it's reasonable to speculate maybe Afroman didn't know who just came up behind and started grabbing him, and reacted swiftly.
I'm not trying to ride Afroman's dick, but don't make it seem like it's something it's not. Also, its a pretty well known fact as a fan you don't just jump on stage cause you feel like it. People who, uninvitationally, go on stage during a show usually get roughed up because how are people suppose to know if this random person is a mega-fan or someone trying to hurt them for clout or publicity (xxxtentacion, Pantera, Ski Mask, and I assume others have had the latter happen to them)

Because I Got High came out when I was almost 40 yrs old. I laughed my ass off and bought the CD, then ended up learning most of the songs because I enjoyed his music and style. Afroman has got a lot of talent. I'm glad to see he's in the news again with his new releases but sorry he had to go through those hassles with the police.

He's brought so much light to cannabis and I think he had a big impact on destigmatizing weed culture in the early 2000's. So great to see how far weed laws have changed over the years In the states. Afroman will always be be played in the playlist for the kickbacks, colt 45 personally is what got me on to Afroman and is for sure my favorite song.
