Thank you for being so gentle with him. I love that you give them a break and listen to the dog. It can be a bonding experience and not just to try to get accomplished
D.I.R Thank You so much for watching.Depending, how full coated your dog is,you should try your best to do this twice a week.If your dealing with snow or rain, maybe three times.snow and rain can cause them to knot up quickly.Yes,always remember to brush prior to bath, and after as well.If you blow dry, please, please remember,to never use heat, pay special attention to not burn ur precious pooch...
Twice a week?? I have to do it every single day because his sister is an American Bull Dog who slobbers on him all day long. H e has an interesting hair gel which is what it looks like after they've played all day long. He's grown to enjoy his brushing so he basically gets tangles but not knots. I can't imagine if I skipped a day.. He is only 41/2 months old. I'm going to keep his hair long. I've seen way too many Havanese grooming fails. I do have a question, he gets a piece of hair that goes up by his eye too. I brush him wet but not until it is dry, should I brush his face until it dries?
@@3artsofhealing233 I've heard every day too! However I don't do a full body brush every day. I have a malamute and the advice I've heard is like do a section every day. So back legs one day, torso the next, front legs after that, then ruff, head, tail, then start over on the back....So I guess it works out to about two to three times a week?
Thank you for doing this video - Teddy thanks you, too! Now Mom has a better idea on how to go about a more gentle, happy brushing time! There’s nothing in the world so special as a Havanese - so loving, so silly, and worth every bit of maintenance they need! ❤️
Thank you for showing curved brush. I started our guys with flat vinyl on one side wire on other. Going to get curved one today. Easier on both of us. Great video!
I'm watching and grooming my dog at the same time, except our grooming position is always having her in my lap! I like this method of short strokes with the slicker. I normally would have used a pin brush first, followed by a comb to get the knots out, then the slicker to smooth it. But the slicker first is working and doesn't seem to be breaking her top coat. The only thing I would suggest is that, as an owner, mats don't have to be shaved off. I just carefully work them out with a comb, picking at it from the outside edge and working in to the middle of it.
Great Video! clear concise instruction, and the quality of video closeups are Excellent!! I have a 1yr old Havenese, and have been looking for a quality video on how to groom this adorable breed. The brush out is so very iportant, I appreciate your thorough instruction, and REALLY looking forward to seeing the mentioned upcoming Havenese groom, and yes, the face is often where other videos fall quite short of accurate for this specific breed. hopefully little Snoopy will be your (perfect) model again :-), but so glad to have found your grooming site, with appreciation for the Havenese breed! Thank you very much! i must go now and subscribe! :-)
Thank you so much for this video. I have a havanese and every time she goes to the groomer she comes home very stressed out. I wanted to learn how to do it and your video is very thorough. Thanks a lot!
Thank you so much for watching Niki. We are glad you found the video helpful. It is great that you are taking an interest in learning how to do it at home. Havanese require alot of brushing and upkeep at home as well as at the groomers, so doing as much as you can at home will only help along your pet's experience while at the groomer. Is your Havanese well behaved at home?
Brilliant video! Wish I saw this a year ago when we first got our little Havanese - would have saved so much effort in getting out those knots every couple of days! Thank you!
Thank you Rudy...a groomer once told me only to use a comb...and brushing my two Havaneses takes for ever...I have to do tiny sections trying to work out knots and trying to hold hair section so it will not pull on skin and hurt my babies. I was always worried about scratching skin while using the slicker brush. My male looks just like Snoopy. 😉
A comb is always best on a Havanes, but it has to be done daily, and the must remain knot free at all times,or else you will find yourself yanking, and pulling on his coat causing pain..Although using a Slicker, may sometimes break the hair, it also can be the more comfortable option ..
Wonderful video…I’ve had our Havanese for a month…she is 14 weeks old. I groom her everyday as it is a great bonding experience as you mentioned. The breeder must have worked with her from the beginning because she lifts her head for brushing & never give me any trouble grooming. Love this breed! Thanks for the info! :))
You are so lucky, my 4 month old Havanese has hated combing/brushing since day one when I got him at 10 weeks. I work with him every day doing a little at a time an it has gotten slightly better.
Thank u for posting this video. I have a havanese at home and I was having a very hard time brushing his hair because I didn’t know what I was doing. Great video 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
My puppy is Havanese & Cockapoo. He looks more Havanese like his mother and he has the Mambo-Bounce walk. But he hates getting brushed and groomed. Thanks for this video!
OMG no one in my area knows how to brush my Havanese, He mats so easily and this video is so helpful. I can brush him one day and the next he can be matted. And he knots quickly to. I think part of it is his harness he wears. He tries to be patient but I know it hurts him to get the mats out. thanks for this video. My first needed almost no grooming, my new little guy needs it daily.
I just tried this method and he tolerated it really well, even in the tangles which he is really fussy about, I need to get better brushes and I know he will have a great coat thank you.
Yes a good brush is very important. We have a link in the description of this video for the brush we always recommend. When you brush, do it the same way every time. The more you do it, the less tangles and knots, the better he will get.
Thank You for watching Sandra. If you have any questions,or suggestions,be sure to let us know,as mentioned we want to show a lot more tips on the Havanese being that they are such a sweet breed of dog,and becoming more popular by the day.

Fantastic video--you have a great teaching style. One question: Do you mist/dampen before brushing? I've read that you should never brush the hair dry--or you could break the hair. But then I've also read that you shouldn't brush the hair wet--the hair is elastic wet and the stretching means more pulling at the dog's skin (or something like that). So which is it? Or is a light misting the happy medium? Thanks!
Thank you so much ! That is a great question, yes light misting is a happy medium BUT depends on breed, for example, Havanese, yes some light misting is a good idea, but say a Poodle? Not necessary, you won’t break the hair on a breed like that.
Thank you so much for this video. I have a 7 month old puppy that I like to brush and bathe in between the grooming sessions. I've been looking for a video just like this for months!
Hi I just subscribe yr beautiful video. I want to get male Havanese I’m still searching honest dog breeders or puppy shop. So many scammers out there. I m gonna watch yr video over over to learn how to grooming my baby boy. 🙏❤️. Yr boy is great. Thank you so much.
Thank you for your detail demonstration. Vey helpful.Have you done a training on cleaning the eyes? My Havanese daily drainage of eyes that matt hair.I am concerned I hurt her or do damage.
Hi J,Thank You,for your kind comment.Daily wiping, with a warm clean rag,or cotton, will help. When you have her groomed, you can ask your groomer,to go short under the eyes,by either using a clipper,or a thinning shear..If she matts up quickly under the eyes, ask if they can just clip out under the eyes in between grooming appointments .Maybe every 3 weeks. It will prevent the matting..
Rudy, great tips! I groom my own Havanese at home, and they are high maintenance babies. Could you please do a video on grooming a Havanese face? especially around the eyes. I let mine grow, and it's a little more work to keep it clean. Please do a video on how to shape the Havanese face, it's all about that face :) thanks!
Hey Agnes, thanks for the comment, and yes we will be putting out a face and head trim,if not on a Havanese,a dog with a similar coat type. You might want to check out our most recent how to video,on trimming bangs on a maltese. It may help..If not,we will definatly put out a Hav,face trim video..Thanks Again.
Great video! What a good boy! I’ve had my 4 year old havanese for about three months and he barely tolerates a brushing but once I get to his face he does whatever he can to get away from me. I was told when I got him I should use the comb first when grooming then the brush. Have I been doing it wrong this whole time?
No,you are fine doing it that way,as long as you can get the comb through his coat, without pulling to hard on any knots..thank you so much for your kind words and for watching us...
Thank you for this demo video, very informative! I'm trying to groom my 1 1/2 year old Havanese at home because I have not yet found a groomer that will do anything but shave her down.
Thank You you for watching Donna.I think the key,is to keep them as brushed as possible with the slicker brush, and always brush prior to the bath.We will be showing more Havanese tips in the future, that might help you out..
I have a 15 week old Havamalt that I am trying to get used to bathing and brushing. He only sits still when I am constantly giving treats. I will be glad when he will sit like this. I took him for his first grooming last week and he bit the groomer when she tried to trim his face.
This is so informative, thank you! I’m going to tag this video for reassurance during my daily brushing. My Havanese Teddy is just a year old and is getting better about the brushing, but man, it’s still a struggle. I have found that separating the knots with my fingers works so much better than trying to brush it out first, and Teddy to,erases the finger detangling much better. I have super curly hair and I’m the same way! Get away from me with that brush! Thanks again.
Try a Chris Christensen wooden brush with spray detangler. That was recommended on a lot of Havanese sites. My Hav never minded that because it doesn't hurt. He would lie on his back while brushing which was a huge change!
Thank you, Rudy, for the informative video. My most awesome15 year old Maltese died in February, and I'm considering getting either a Havanese or a little poodle. I kept my Maltese in long, coat but not show coat, and brushed him every night. But, that's a single coat, as you know. Which coat would you say is the most like a Maltese as far as grooming goes? Thank you very much!
Hey Beth,so sorry to hear that your Maltese passed away..I think that the Havanese is closest to a maltese coat, more so than a poodle..They are also very smart, easy to train, and very lovable..Good Luck, with your new pup,and let us know how you make out with him,or her..Thank You so much for your kind comment, and for watching..
My Havanese loves the Chris Christensen brass fusion brush and HATES every other brush especially those slicker brushes. I also have a rolling pin comb by evolution which is the only comb she likes.
I have had my Isabella 3 mons, she had my heart at hello, I am her 3rd owner so she is timid until she trusts you...but she is now in her forever home with lots of love.
Very helpful video! Thank you. Am planning on getting a Havanese in Spring 2018 (am on waiting list of v good breeder). Had a Bichon frise who lived to be over age 17, so I'm prepared for the daily grooming, I think. Will look forward to more of your grooming tips for this breed. I'm thinking that for the first year (I hope less) I'll have to keep our puppy in the puppy cut, and get her used to grooming. Snoopy is such a great guy that I'm hopeful we can have ours grow a coat before the first birthday.
Hi Diana. Sorry for such a late response, i could have sworn i replied to you. Considering the growing popularity of this breed you can expect plenty more videos on Havanese. If you have owned a Bichon in the past than you will most likely be more prepared for the daily upkeep than someone who hasn't.
Rudy, came back again to watch -- the entire vid, which is SO helpful, and added bonus because Snoopy is so lovely, what a great boy ... so wanted to tell you again this vid is very helpful, even inspiring. Inspiration helps, when it's a Hav who'll need 2x to 3x per week brushing. A question: I was consistently told to not bathe my Bichon frise more than about once per month (ish), although of course IS done if they get muddy. This did work for our Bichon, maybe even LESS frequently than 1x/month, with her somewhat delicate skin. Is this the same recommended interval for the Havanese? ... Thanks, and we're looking forward to more vids on care of Havanese breed -- but we do watch your vids on other breeds and subjects, too.
Hey Diana,Thank You so much, for the rewatch. That means so much to us.The videos are meant for just that,so that you can reference, and become more practiced. To answer your question about bathing,I usually tell my customers to not bath any more than every 3 weeks to not dry out the coat,or skin. Also, always do a thorough brush out prior to every bath, and if bathing often, try to use the most mild shampoo you can find, such as a tearless puppy shampoo..There are some great products that you can use to help keep your dogs coat clean in between baths..We use Show Sheen, just spray some on,and brush it in.Its a great dirt repellent..Thanks Again for watching..
Rudy -- Hi again! I returned here to get the name of the recommended slicker brush brand. However, while I think I did see the link to the brand here a few months ago, I'm not seeing anything listed here. Was it an (a cc and paste here) >> "Oscar Frank Grand Deluxe Plastic Handle Soft Pet Slicker Brush" -- ?? I'm ordering things for my puppy, who I visited today at t' breeder's house ... he'll be coming home with me in a few weeks, and I'm almost beside myself with excitement. I'll also begetting a Andis comb (and plenty else!). Thanks -- Diana.
hi Diana! great to hear from you again. Here is the link for the brush we recommend. When they are new they are a little bit stiff so when you first begin using it just be careful not to tug on knots to hard. Congrads on almost getting your new puppy! Thanks for this informative guide! Snoopy is such a good boy, so cute! I’m getting my Havanese puppy in 4 weeks! :) So excited! (not for grooming lol). Even though you mentioned snoopy was always still from the get go, was wondering how much training it took you to get Snoopy so obedient and well behaved?
Snoopy,is a very unique pup..He was very good from jump street..sometimes you get lucky, and puppies do very well.Check out our how to introduce puppies videos.Im sure your pup will do well, don't worry.Sometimes it takes a couple grooming sessions, but they usually start to accept it after a while..let us know.Thank You for watching us..
I heard you say to brush with the growth of the hair. My groomer told me to brush my Havaton from neck to tail and then tail to neck. Do you know of any reason why one would brush in that manner??
My husband and I just got a rescue havanese dog. I really appreciate your doing this video! Wondering about the static electricity in her fur? Do you ever use the detangler sprays? Our havanese, Shiloh, is a good doggy too! Great breed. Enjoying her a whole lot.
Jean..Thank You for your kind comments..Yes,we do use cream rinses, and detanglers..Just make sure to do a thorough brush out, prior to the bath, and also we use a product called Show Sheen..that works great for static ..Im not to keen on whitening shampoos,i find there not all that effective, and tend to dry out the coat if used to often..Not a whole lot you can do about the staining, except to change there drinking water, and possibly switch to an all natural raw diet..All dogs are different ,and some have a lot more acidity in there saliva then others, which will cause more staining..Thank You again for watching us..
We brought home our 8 week old havanese puppy today!! So if this brush out is before a bath, what do you do as far as brushing after his bath? And do you blow dry his hair?
Cowboy magic works really well on any large tangles or mattes. My havi loves to run in snow and sometimes her under coat gets matted. I can hand separate the knot with a little cowboy magic serum then comb it out
Sunny moon thanks for watching,if your dog doesn't like the legs so much, maybe try to do them last, and don't stay on one leg to long.bounce around from one to another.little here a little there. Thanks again.
I have three Havanese!! Neither one likes the process of grooming with me. They try to get away always. I don't have a grooming table and noose. Any tips for me?? I do have them professionally groomed every 6 weeks.
Is this applicable to all coat types? Because ive always heard that too....brush with the grain of the hair growth....but ive recently heard for malamutes to brush against the grain to make the hair stick up all fluffy. I also notice when he blows his coat i get more hair out going back and forth: with, against, crosswise to and then with the grain again.
The process would be the same, however the tool would be different. On a malamute you would want to combine the slicker brush and the rake. However if it was a show dog both the process and tools would be different. Our Shelty video may be more helpful. ruclips.net/video/Sr_aFH3RhXI/видео.html
What if I prefer to keep my Havanese‘ coat a bit shorter, approximately 2 1/2 inches? Where I live, it’s very hot half of the year, and the other half is slightly cooler, but still pretty hot and humid compared to other parts of the world. I don’t want my Havie to overheat, so how will the grooming differ with a shorter coat?
J T Oh wow, really? I’d never considered that, since it seems to go against logic. But I’ll try that, and see which my Havie seems more comfortable in! Thanks for the tip!
I read that the long coat keeps them cooler, but my Hav loves a short coat & acts like a puppy at 13 yrs when it was cut. In the hot humid climate of the southern coast, he definitely loved a very short coat in the summer tangle-free & low maintenace!
I noticed your scissors don't have the rounded tips. Is that because he's well trained in grooming, or do you use them on all dogs? Should I look at getting them for my dog?
Hey Morgan, sorry for the late response..It is a little of both.Snoopy is very well trained, for the grooming process, and I also am very comfortable using professional shears.Depending on your experience, and confidence, and yes a well trained dog,it is really up to you whether or not you want to use a shear without rounded tips..If you are not comfortable using one without, you may not want to..Thank You so much for watching..
I'm a new owner of a Chocolate Havanese, and have always read that you should not dry brush there coat, because it can cause breakage. Is this true? I always use a detangler spray when I brush her. I noticed in your video that you didn't use anything. Have any suggestions for tears that cause a wet muzzle and matting daily? Appreciate any help, since this is my first puppy.
Thank You for watching kimberly..Good luck with your Hav..We are getting so many in our shop..Great Dogs..Maybe you can take the tail a little shorter,so not to get knotted so quickly..We find, that happens to a lot of them..
Hey Cyn,sorry for the late response..It is not uncommon, for a dog to not like the brushing process..If your dog is knotted,or matted, don't try to brush it out,it will only make her hate it more, and she will associate the brushing with being pulled ,or yanked on.You can try to clip out knots, and or mats, and try to brush her little by little, with no tugging,so she knows that the brush is not gonna pull on her coat..if she is matted or knotted, you may have to give her a shave down, and than start brushing her everyday, even if she has really short coat, just to get her used to it..It will give you a fresh start..
Havs are larger in the US. Niko weighs 15-16 lbs & is not overweight. The breeder said he would be about 12 lbs as an adult, but he kept growing. He is average according to charts I've seen.
Hi there Niki! The comb is a greyhound comb. You can pretty much get them anywhere but here is an amazon link for it :) www.amazon.com/Andis-2-Inch-Steel-Comb-65730/dp/B004UTDHP2/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1521732446&sr=8-2&keywords=greyhound+comb

Thank you so much for your kind comment, and for subscribing.I hope the video helps..
He's so good!
My 9 yr old Havanese has a puppy cut. Do you still recommend a slicker brush? We use one with bristles like humans have.
Yes, a soft slicker,is safe, and will do a better job, then a long bristle brush ...Thank You so much for watching us..
Looking forward to that vid when you can make it, Rudy. Please attach a link here so we can all find it when it's up on YT. Thank you!
Great, very helpful.
@@mikeperry4323 thank you so much for your kind words and for watching us..
I know. It's like they charge you as if they did an amazing job and all they did was shave her.
My groomer told me my havi was not a full blood havenese. She also says that you should keep her real short or shaved!
I have a 15 week old Havamalt that I am trying to get used to bathing and brushing. He only sits still when I am constantly giving treats. I will be glad when he will sit like this. I took him for his first grooming last week and he bit the groomer when she tried to trim his face.
Thanks so much for the lesson...so helpful....
Where to purchase the brush and comb you are using?
Learned some new brush techniques. I have a Havie, the coat is a challenge. Great video.
Thanks so much for watching. Havanese can certainly be a challenge sometimes. How old is your's?
Rico is 5 yrs. old and hates to have his front legs groomed. Lookforward to seeing Snoopy trimmed for more hints. I groom Ricomyself, he's a cutie.
Which Oscar Frank brush are you using, standard or deluxe? Large or Small? They also seem to be difficult to locate. Are they discontinued?
Its a large..You should be able to get them on Amazon,If not there try..Groomers Choice,or Pet Edge..
So this video helped me a loT.
What a good dog
What kind of grooming table do you have ? It turns so easily !
I custom made my grooming tables..I purchased barber chair hydraulic bases, and built a box, and table top...
The same with my havanese.
I have had my Isabella 3 mons, she had my heart at hello, I am her 3rd owner so she is timid until she trusts you...but she is now in her forever home with lots of love.
Im so glad Isabella is with you now..I love that name..
Please let us know how everything is going. Also don't forget to send us a picture so we can feature him on our instagram, there are few things cuter in life than a puppy havanese hahaha. www.amazon.com/Slicker-Brushes-Universal-Curved-Grooming/dp/B06XQQQ7XY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1522116107&sr=8-1&keywords=oscar+frank+slicker+brush
If we brush before a bath, do we need to spray/mist coat with anything before brushing? Do we spray before daily brushings?
How do you make him stand? My always lay down and go to sleep))
I use a Chris Christiansen wooden brush while drying on low to make the coat straight & silky.
Cowboy magic works really well on any large tangles or mattes. My havi loves to run in snow and sometimes her under coat gets matted.
I can hand separate the knot with a little cowboy magic serum then comb it out
What is cowboy magic?
Excellent video! I wish you were local. Our dog is not as patient as this one, especially with his legs.
Sunny moon thanks for watching,if your dog doesn't like the legs so much, maybe try to do them last, and don't stay on one leg to long.bounce around from one to another.little here a little there. Thanks again.
What kind of,slicker brush do you use?
Frank's Universal Slicker.
It doesn't really,it just means taking more off,by way of a haircut..
Grooming By Rudy Okay, that helps! Thank you!
Longer coats actually keep Havanese cooler in hot/humid weather than shorter coats. The breed is from Cuba and long coats are the norm there.
J T
Oh wow, really? I’d never considered that, since it seems to go against logic. But I’ll try that, and see which my Havie seems more comfortable in! Thanks for the tip!
I read that the long coat keeps them cooler, but my Hav loves a short coat & acts like a puppy at 13 yrs when it was cut. In the hot humid climate of the southern coast, he definitely loved a very short coat in the summer tangle-free & low maintenace!
Great job
I noticed your scissors don't have the rounded tips. Is that because he's well trained in grooming, or do you use them on all dogs? Should I look at getting them for my dog?
Hey Morgan, sorry for the late response..It is a little of both.Snoopy is very well trained, for the grooming process, and I also am very comfortable using professional shears.Depending on your experience, and confidence, and yes a well trained dog,it is really up to you whether or not you want to use a shear without rounded tips..If you are not comfortable using one without, you may not want to..Thank You so much for watching..
Does brushing the hair PULL and HURT snoopy?
Good Boy Snoopy. 🥰🥰🥰
My cocker spaniel absolutely hates the slicker brush. Do you have any recommendations?
I use a Chris Christensen brass fusion brush. It is amazing. My Hav loves it and absolutely hates slicker brushes!
I use the Chris Christensen wooden brush recommended by owners on many Havanese sites. It actually feels good on their skin!
much appreciated video lol
Thank you so much for watching us...
Thank you!
thanks for the tips! My Havanese is great about grooming, but her tail gets knotted at times.
Thank You for watching kimberly..Good luck with your Hav..We are getting so many in our shop..Great Dogs..Maybe you can take the tail a little shorter,so not to get knotted so quickly..We find, that happens to a lot of them..
My little girl HATES being brushed, particularly on her legs. She does not stand still, as yours is doing here. Any suggestions?
I got a Havanese puppy. What is the best brush to purchase???
laguirre..Soft Universal Slicker brush,and a steel comb..
Chris Christensen wood brush & butter combs. They don't pull & wood bristles are gentler on the skin.
That’s a really big havanese 😁 my havanese girl is also bigger than normal
Havs are larger in the US. Niko weighs 15-16 lbs & is not overweight. The breeder said he would be about 12 lbs as an adult, but he kept growing. He is average according to charts I've seen.
I brush my havanese name Gucci almost everyday. Sometimes he falls asleep 😴
LOL...That is so cute!!!
Thank you! :)
I've always wondered, isn't the big brush rough on the dog's skin? I allmost never use that brush because I'm afraid that I'll hurt my dog's skin:(
Just do it gently
❤️
Havanese are the best I have 2 - both 5 months old
Yes knots behind the ear 👂
I want to buy that comb, where can I find it?
Hi there Niki! The comb is a greyhound comb. You can pretty much get them anywhere but here is an amazon link for it :) www.amazon.com/Andis-2-Inch-Steel-Comb-65730/dp/B004UTDHP2/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1521732446&sr=8-2&keywords=greyhound+comb
Thank you so much for taking the time to respond!!! I wish you could leave near our area so you could groom my Havanese
My havanese hates his legs and paws brushed! I use detangler spray
Will you brush my hair?
My dog fights me when I brush him …. Makes it very difficult to brush him
Mi habanero jamas estuvo tan rasta.me escandalizo
My Havanese would only let me brush him. He barked and growled at groomer.
Hey Latoya, maybe you can groom him at home..How old is he? is he still a pup?
Good job!
Thank You Vicky..
