Is it possible to not use a media and eliminate the hassle of roots cleaning? I want to use this for my own garden to feed a family, don't intend to harvest a whole tower per meal, just pick a bunch of greens up and replace with a seedling. I don't want to pull the whole strip of plants out just to get to one plant.

It helps keep the roots saturated in a media that is mostly air. You can stop using it if you have enough biological material in the media to help pull the water close to the roots.

If we use seed starting mix instead of those plugs... should we remove that mix from roots before transplanting it in zip grow tower...??
