  • Performances are made OR broken before they even start! What you focus on and think about before your start can either keep you calm and enhance your confidence or do the opposite, stress you out, and set you up for failure.
The MAIN purpose of a pre-performance ritual is to keep you calm by helping distract you from distractions, especially last minute negative thinking and self-doubts.
These are Unprecedented and Scary Times. As Sports Performance Consultants, we’re here to help athletes, coaches and parents manage this incredible stress and help them stay calm, motivated and mentally tough!

Hello Dr goldberg, I have a question about shooting in soccer. I hear alot that external focus is better for training your shot,
because it has better retention and transfer than internal focus with a specific movement (right?) now i've noticed that when i shoot, most of the times i dont even look at the place i want to shoot (external focus) but i look at the ball and i got somewhat of a shot visualization in my head where i want the ball to go does this count as external focus? and is this the right way to practice and improve shooting ability? or should i always look where to shoot and not use my instinct.

I learn things about internal/external & implicit/explicit focus and their effect on retention and transfer at school because im studying physiotherapy. I like to get your view on this if thats possible.

      Adam,
As far as I'm concerned, when you shoot, you want to have an external focus but on the ball and not necessarily on where you want it to go. A target or goal focus actually takes you away from concentrating on the ball and exactly where you need to strike it. You pick up your target focus automatically as you set your shot up and then your focus needs to be only on the ball. I would imagine that any kind of visualization that goes on in these situations is more automatic and less conscious. I say this because if there is a part of you that is trying to visualize the shot, this will distract you from focusing on the ball. If you were taking a PK however, you could work a brief visualization into your pre-kick routine. However, in the flow of the game and getting ready to shoot, any kind of visualization (except unconscious/automatic) will distract you from your real target which is the ball and where you will be striking it!

Hello doctor Alan, I am the girl who wrote you a few months ago, I need your help, please, a while ago I had a competition in which it went badly for me since we stopped training for the COVID for half a year and that affected me apart from the fact that I practically went alone to train since the girl with whom I was always missing, so I decided to change my team since what we were doing was not working but after the competition I began to feel very depressed I began to think if that was really my thing, if I should leave it if my dreams and expectations would only get there but the thought that tormented me the most was leaving swimming because without it it would only be I have been swimming for 3 years and I have had a great time until now I have never felt like this and no I know how to get rid of those thoughts, my mind turns and turns in them and I get tired and now that I am in the team that I want and that I always dream, this happens to me, sometimes I think about leaving it but once my life plan is abandoned and I would be left without any objective and I don't like that idea at all but Alaves right now I feel doubt and laziness when swimming or doing something and that feeling causes me sadness and I know that swimming is something I love, I don't know what to do, please help me Thank you I hope you read my message and greetings

      Yuliana,
Covid has thrown a wrench in everyone's training, competitions and caused self-confidence to do a disappearing act! Most everyone I talk to in swimming is struggling one way or the other! It is hard to train consistently, even harder to have a meet schedule that will motivate you to work towards your goals, etc.
Now is not the time to give up on yourself. Things are naturally way off and this is what is contributing to your feeling down and discouraged! My advice to you is to hang in there, try to keep your focus on the dreams that you used to have! Now is not the time to abandon them. Things will get better in time.
      Hope this helps a little!

Hi Alan, I am a soccer player that sometimes plays well and other times I play bad. When I play bad its usually because mentally I am too nervous or too intimidated by the people ir the things around me. Or I am afraid to make a mistake, and I end up just watching the coach too much in the games. Do you have any tips on how to be more mentally consistent?

Hello dr/coach I’m a swimmer which is going through a lot mentally, my father is my coach, we always have those conversations about my goals and my times, I used to drop times every meet and I reached great numbers I’ve even participated in World Cup but in the last two years I’ve had a lot of metal problem, it’s like I have no trust in my self that I could go a race full speed or I don’t have confidence in the competitions I don’t like to be embarrassed or people taking about my race so I’ve had a lot of mental problem and now my times are going up even thought I’m improving in training I beat my friends in every race/test in trainings but when it comes to competition it’s like I haven’t trains for years and overthink, can you help me Dr

I resort to prayer, which takes the pressure off me and leave the results to God. Firstly,do the best preparation you can and the will take of it self.
