How the HECK did pick up that “Like Real People Do” had a “swamp land” feel to it? He wrote that song after reading about “bog bodies”. They’re basically ancient people who were naturally mummified after being buried in a bog (or SWAMP!!). So he’s saying that he is a bog body who was just discovered by his lover and just wants to feel the love of an alive person. I cannot believe you picked up on the setting just from the sound. Incredible! You should look up bog bodies, they’re super interesting.

"Angel of small death" means someone who gives good orgasms. Traditionally "the small death" means orgasm. You're right the song is intense but it's pretty much hes addicted to this girl who's no good for him. That's why codeine is brought up cause hes addicted to her.
Edit: that's not hozier in movement but yes it did look like him. I forget who it actually is. It's one of my favorites as well though. Something you gonna learn a lot of hozier songs are high key horny. You should check out the song "in a week" it's one of my absolute favorites by him. I read another interpretation I agree with which is that it's the other way around, I think the song's personifying a drug(heroin) as a woman. Even though small death is a reference to orgasm, in this sense it seems to mean that the protagonist is half-alive. You can see the connection to this feeling in other song lyrics too like in Sedated.
"Something isn't right, babe; I keep catching
Little words, but the meaning's thin
I'm somewhere outside my life, babe; I keep scratching
But somehow I can't get in"
So ultimately I think it's about playing with drugs that lead to addiction and it's just a cycle to where you need the drugs to just feel alive.

a little info on Angel of Small Death and the Codeine Scene because it is one of my favorite songs of all time. In french, "little death" (small death) translates to "petite mort", which is an idiom used to describe an orgasm. In addition to codeine being a drug, he is basically calling her the angel of sex and drugs. When her breath is described as sweetened, it is referring to lean, which is the codeine infused drink that tastes like candy, hence her breath being sweet. In doing all of this, he is basically comparing the high of opiates to ecstasy of orgasm :)

Movement is one of my all-time favorites. The dancer is Sergei Polunin, whom he also references in the lyrics because he did an incredible dance to Take Me To Church after it came out. Unfortunately, he later came out virulently anti-gay among other things. But the song is incredible live. I saw him in Phoenix this past October, and Movement literally made the hairs all over my body stand on end. Definite highlight of the show.
Part 3 suggestions: No Plan, Dinner & Diatribes, In A Week, and Jackboot Jump.

"Digging up what's left of me," as I interpret it, is a follow up to the line " all the versions of me buried in the yard outside." That's just my interpretation. He tried to be everything he thought everyone wanted him to be, and he was finally himself with her. "No better version of me I could pretend to be tonight." Later, when the relationship ended, he felt extremely stupid for letting the facade down. He returns to being what he thought others wanted him to be.

"Like Real People Do" makes me think about two people finding each other and finding happiness while trying to put bad things behind each other.
it reminds me and my partner rn, I attempted suicide last year and I met him the summer after, when I was getting better, and my partner met me after a rough time too.

In the woods somewhere was faintly inspired by the intro of Dante’s Inferno and Small Death is a literal translation of what an orgasm is in French! You NEEEEED to listen to Sunlight. Everyone sleeps on it.

Honestly, when you began listening to In The Woods Somewhere, I had the widest smile on my face as if I was in the room with you! Hozier has an air of magic to him thanks to the inspiration he's drawn from so many others that do the same. Your reactions and interpretations of his songs adds a whole other layer of magic to this because you take time to fully look at the lyrics; I'll admit, I responded out loud to you enough times that my family thought I was in a video call with someone. Thank you for a great video!

Hey, for Angel Of Small Death, “small death” is likely a reference to the french term “Petite mort” and I’m not gonna say what that means but it link with the ‘sexy’ theme you mentioned 👀👀

Yesssss I love Hozier!! Great analysis as always! Further ESSENTIAL Hozier listening:
NFWMB: being in love w an eldritch horror?? sign me UP! I love what Hozier has said about this, that it’s about loving someone who doesn’t need any sort of protection because they are terrifyingly powerful
To Be Alone: Hozier let’s it FLY w this one very good!! When he does it live it’s INSANE
Wasteland Baby: The thesis of his most recent album, how to spend the apocalypse w your loved one. Relevant!
Almost (Sweet Music): a nice song but Hozier says to pay attention to the sad lyrics :(
Jackboot Jump: the theme of the revolution!!!

There are 3 main types of Hozier songs:
    1) Women are cruel angels and we worship them from beneath their tender fists
    2) Music, Power, Love, Happiness
    3) I Am A Corpse In The Forest and it is SEXY
All three contain many beautiful, thought-provoking metaphors and messages. And when you really dig through the first two categories, you'll usually find the surface story, and then the deeper message, but the latter category at the core is really just FuCk YeAh BOG BODIES.
But for real, I'm so glad you have fallen in love with Hozier as much as the rest of us have, his music has been such a beautiful part of my life for so long, and I'm glad that so many more people have discovered the beauty and wonder of his music

This was such a nice video! We really do stan Hozier 's whisps in the woods vibes. For recs, I'd say you should listen to Troye Sivan, and the blue neighborhood trilogy/shortfilm would be a great way to be introduced! His style is definitely more pop, but he also does the angelic, breathy voice and that trilogy specifically is gonna give you a lot of emotions to feel. I think you'll enjoy it, even if I also think you're gonna cry during it :)
