  • The Battle of Bastogne is perhaps one of the most famous battle of the Second World War in the West. Nevertheless, it is often overshadowed by the actions of the 506th PIR, or the breaking of the Siege by Patton. In this video, we will take a look at a small unit action which equally highlights the staunch defence put up by the Screaming Eagles and which can equally serve as a way in which the Siege and defence of Bastogne can be explained. In this second part, we will build on the First Action at Marvie, and to see how the 2nd battalion, 327th Glider Infantry Regiment of the 101st Airborne Division successfully defended the Panzer Lehr Division’s main assault on the village on 23 and 24 December 1944. Capturing Marvie would offer the Germans the first gateway into Bastogne. The Second Battle of Marvie was further characterised by the famous event in which General McAuliffe dispatched his ‘Nuts!’ response to the German general calling for his surrender.

Amazing how things work out. The halftrack did more for the defenses than if it had stayed and fought where it was supposed to. That's fate.

I really enjoy the descriptions and animations of the small unit actions within the larger battle. It reveals the courage displayed by these individuals and small groups of men that collectively comprise the larger conflict.

I really appreciate your historical videos. A note on Marvie Part 2: it would have been helpful if Hill 500 had been explicitly marked. What an amazing seesaw battle. The role of the blue on blue destroyed half track in blocking panzers from driving into Marvie is sad and yet ironically important in saving Marvie and possibly Bastogne.

While there is little doubt as to the heroism of the 327th, what is often overlooked is that the defense of Bastogne began with a small task force of the 10th Armored Division, with the 20th Armored Infantry Battalion under Major Desobry at Noville. They and elements of other 9th and 10th Armored Division plus soldiers from the 28th Infantry Division and elements of two tank destroyer battalions then came under McAuliffe's command when the 101st moved up.
