I am 70 & have been an avid knife collector most of my adult life. I purchased the Ontario RTAK2 before ESEE entered the picture, & just love everything about it. The handle scales may be more radiused on the ESEE, but the RTAK2 is my old friend with the same steel. I have several other Ontario knives also & feel an allegiance to the company because I live in Western Mass & Ontario Knives is in NY State close by. My all time best chopper is the Cold Steel Gurkha Kukri with a 5/16" thick spine in a 12" blade.
I’ve heard awesome stuff about that one from OKC.
All excellent blades and opinions. Brand loyalty is good as long as the quality is same or better through the years. OKC is one of those good companies out there. No personal experience but heard lots of great things
I stay behind esee and i love my junglas 2 perfect for me. Big enough to chop and baton but not too big for some carving tasks

I've owned the El Chete for about 3 years now. It stays attached to my camp bag and is loved by everyone that uses it for processing wood. Takes the place of a hatchet in my eyes.
Absolutely!!! And it performs very well that way.
I loved the Esse Junglas. I think I got it for 200 doallers back in the day. They are very expensive now. Great knife and lifetime warrenty.
I've had the El Chete for about three years now and use almost exclusively for processing wood down for our fireplace. It is a great blade, but not for backpacking. For that I give the Top's BOB the honor; another great knife. Thanks for your great videos....very fair and unbiased.

I took a rotary tool a ground a small rounded groove in the spine of my Esse Junglas. It throws sparks like a champ now.

Yep, that’s pretty much standard for me. I use a 3/8” or a 1/2” burr and grind a 1/8”-3/16” deep groove at the jimping. It basically looks like the start of a choil.

I have the el chete and it's a beast for chopping task. Ive chopped down big trees with it. I usually carry a smaller blade for the finer tasks

Worksharp grinder will fix the 90-degree spine issue, as well as the handle on the Tops El Chete, I did that with mine and am happy with the results.
I see you reccomended the rat 7 in your description! I almost sprung for it but I opted for the rat 5 instead. I also own a couple of the other knives in your description as well. Much love, and keep up the good work!

My setup is a El Chete and Hogue EX-F01 7" drop point. My experience is you can't add on to your chopper if it needs it, while you're in the bush. I apply the same EDC logic of "One is none, two is one" to my bush gear carry. The Hogue is a hell of a processing blade in its own right, but not really suited for heavy work. I can utilize the Hogue for detail work easily and use as a kitchen knife.
I would rate the Junglas as #1.5, I wouldn't rate it a full place below the El Chete, its badassery is evident the second you pick it up. I would still carry my Hogue with Junglas, same reasons apply.
I wasn't impressed with either of the last two. One is not good enough for heavy wood processing and the other is gimmicky design.
To be fair, I personally like a easy purpose based chopper. That isn't the manufactures fault I like easy designs. I also feel that it wasn't a fair comparison for CUMA King or Field knife. The Junglas and El Chete are fair to compare in one "class" and the CUMA King and Field knife in another. If you compared other 12"+/- to Junglas/El Chete it would be fair. The Junglas 2 would be a fair compare to CUMA/Field knife.

I personally prefer El Chete but you won't go wrong with either one, both quality pieces.

I have the pleasure of owning El Chete. Took a while to get it shipped to Poland, but was worth it, since I literally fell in love with it. It's heavy as f, but it's a pleasure just to have it with you. Not really meant for fine tasks and honestly it is sometimes easier to cleave through wood rather than to baton with it. With its sheer weight it is difficult to find a heavy enough baton to push it through in the initial phase.

Got a junglas for like $120 back in the day and love it. It is my brush clearing go to tool.

The Tops ElChete is nice, the lack of textured finish shows how good it is while chopping.

For the Junglas, if you have to throw sparks with it, just use the blade edge. 🔥

You may want to check out the Zombie Tools Vakra. It's the only blade I've found that can hang with El Chete for chopping although it is more expensive.

Outstanding comparison... I own El Chete and is a war machine. Try to get the Yacare from TOPS which I own as well and its performance is exceptional.
My work tough field knife has excellent sheath retention. Almost to much. I thought about hitting it with a hair dryer to loosen it. Maybe try the same to tighten it?

Thank You for the awesome coverage here. I also wish to specifically address the Sheath Retention Amount. Please Understand All that too much retention can cause injury via having to use too much upward pressure on the retracting hand arm and result in striking yourself as your arm rebounds when the knife does suddenly clear the sheath. It can and does happen. Better to have very little retention pressure in most cases with a bungie or snap device. JMHO
Good test. I would have liked to see the Work Tuff Gear 10in Nomad camp knife instead of the field knife, a more appropriate comparison size wise. However, the field knife was impressive for how much smaller it is..
IMO when it comes to a Chopper that's all it should do. They are not new to strike rods, or featherstick, so for me the El Chete is the best Chopper. Its not a 1 knife option, but I dont think anyone really buys into that idea that there is or can be 1 tool for everything knife related. If your going to be processing wood and using a Chopper your inevitably going to bring a smaller knife for detail work, striking a rod, and all the things a smaller knjfe can excel at doing other than processing wood
A good Survival knife should be able to do anything you need it to do from starting fire to chopping even fire sticking
@@Floreypottery That may ring true in theory, but I haven't seen a single blade to do that in real life.
9" blade thinner than 1/4 is not able to do the work of a 12" El Chete blade, for example. As far as striking a rod, spend 5 minutes to grind a spot on spine of El chete or junglas and that problem is solved. I wouldn't use my chopper for that, I use my 7" fixed blade for that and processing anything small with wood all the way to kitchen or eating with.
A One blade fix it all would be something like a Fallkniven MB 10
Wasn't the El Chete made as a competition cutter? I love its look but just like Benchmade's Comp Chopper 171 they weren't supposed to be designed for sustained workload like bushcrafting but its cool that the Chete can put in some work regardless. Never heard of those other two or the brand but of course the Junglas is a legendary monster

I wil make a future video on this - but overall it's a preference thing and they offer a little different functionality. Large chopper offers me (personally) more diverse uses.
Who uses the spine to get feathers? I Guess i learned a new skill. This was a great review/compare video. I’m going to get Ei Chete. I have the Esse 5 and the Tops Tom Browne Tracker 1 so El Chete will be a chopper my wife will probably enjoy. I also have a hatchet which is 1095. Good stuff. I use Vicks or shoe polish to keep out rust. Oak sawdust gives it a blueing stain that protects. A cotton wheel and turtle wax is great as well for anti rust.
Nice video. More comments on handle design and penetration per hit would have been useful. I personally find all chopping knives are much too thick edged (all around 0.040” or more behind the edge) and too open angled (20 dps and up) : This is an imitation of the brute force of hatchets, but thinner edges would greatly reduce handle impact fatigue and increase performance. The only downside is careless handling could cause edge damage by lateral loads, but 0.020” and 15 dps would make a huge difference at only slight cost in occasional minor edge warping. Thinner edges can also be used hitting on one side only, not alternating sides, which speeds up
Cut-through at least by 20%. Finally, softer steels are better, especially 420, because the edge rounds off instead of holding the apex and then bending on the following hits. Chopping knives should not use regular hard edge knife steels, because hits are never square: Hard edges hang on to the apex and fold, and are inherently harder to restore (obviously)...

You should try the Skrama.
El Chete is a large machete / knife. I think it is very durable and the best in its class but not easy to carry around. A true mountain man should have it with him on certain occasions. Very particular and unique of its kind. I hope to buy one soon
A mountain man would have a pack animal. He’d love the El Chete to complement his axe.

I do have El Chete and Esee Jungalas first and second ( smaller) models , and whole bunch of other choppers like BK7 , BK9, Rtak7 ,and others ,and others, and others in my collection !!
I did try them all !!
They all have something I dont like that much so I have to put them back in their sheath for good.
El Chete is way to havy.
Jungalas has flat grind .
BKs has handle , I dont comfortable with it.
So big knife of mine choice is Ontario SP53.
This knife is not to havy, high saber grind ,, and an excellent chopper !!
I did few modification to it to make it even better.
I did put 90 degree spine on it , i enlarged choil so Iit fits my finger better, I did put convex grind on chopping belly , and scandi grind on cutting edge closer to handle and on edge closer to tip of my knife , also I drill a lanyard hole on blade up front of a handle., and made some mods to the insert of a sheath so knife dont rattle so crazy in it !!
With all this mods this knife turn out to be a truly one tool option. I can do absolutely everything around my camp with this knife , even skin a game , and carve a spoon !! It won't be beautiful, but very functional !!
Last 4 years I have been carrying in my kit only 4 tools ...Ontario SP53, Leatherman Wave multi tool, Baco laplander saw , and 6"×1/2" auger.
All of this 4 tools are fit on my belt , and with little fire kit, and few survival items I can get out of any situation !! But main item of my kit is Ontario SP53 !!
Take a look at this knife , you won't be disappointed !!

You should test these higher end knives vesrse budget friendly choppers like the Kershaw camp 10 etc. see what is the best bang for the buck
The Camp 10 dominated other choppers in TACs videos. ..a beast for such low cost.
Really nice knives but except for the Esee the are too fancy for me. I finally bought 2 Esee knives. The Junglas & #6. They are now in my emergency evacuation kit. Hi from Canada.

You can still do other tasks with the El Chete, but yes it was designed to chop, process wood, and build shelters.
the ESEE won't spark the ferro rod because it has a powder coat and the Tops won't because its differentially heat treated.

My go to is something called the Gator. I don't know if it's still available,but this is a 15" blade, has just the right weight for me. The steel is 1095,and has a Rockwell rating of 56. This knife, it's a lethal weapon!

The 15” Gerber Gator is not a full-tang machete. It also has a plastic handle, putting it in a ‘light use tool’ category.

You said the el chete had the advantage for batoning? That one did the worst! Also would've loved to see bigger logs considering you have bigger knives not batoning through wood that you can baton with a 5 inch bade
I'd say the actual Nomad is a chopper, the field knife is a field knife and i think its use is meant to be used like an esee 6

Use the Tops El Crete professionally as a chef as part of my cleaver group of knives. I’ve been a chef for more than 30 years having owned and used thousands of knifes the avg person has never cut meat let alone chopped a single piece of wood. The use of these knives is vsoooo highly overestimated it is hilarious and I live in a rural region.

I saw Chris over at PreparedMind101 channel review the WTG Nomad and I thought it looked like a great user knife. Now that I see you using it here I would love to get my hands on one.
Yeah it’s really a solid knife and has held up well so far.
The Tops El Chete has a handle that is uncomfortable and too small for my 2XL hands.

dude i'm 6'8 and can palm a basketball and the elchete handle is plenty big enough.
Won't bother with work tuff. Choil indicates designers did not understand function of handle. I like the Esee Junglas, can't afford El Chete, but it looks good.

I mean I processed a dear with el chete. I could work for the kitchen albeit it's a heavy beast and the control like we have a a bug kitchen knife wouldn't be there.
