The factory ND exhaust is a bit tinny and raspy. Increase the flow a bit and reap the performance benefits of a sporty muffler and the classy notes of a premium exhaust solution. Truthfully this video doesn't capture the mellow deep, quality tones that this exhaust produces. Elegance is a great word for what this adds to the 2016+ MX-5.

Just installed my HKS Legamax Premium from Fab9Tuning and I freaking love it. I went from Cobalt to GWR Race to GWR SQTT to HKS within a span of 3 years.
Cobalt had a nice growl before the muffler was broken, but that growl went away after breakin and it started getting too deep/boomy/bassy. The top end was beautiful like blaring trumpets, but I was rarely in that top range for most of my daily driving.
I then switched it up to Race, which sounded awesome, but it was a little too loud in terms of mid/treble. The bass was not intrusive, but the sound itself was too loud. If the Miata was my weekend car, I would've kept this exhaust because it sounds so good. But for daily driving, it started becoming a nuisance. I am a working professional and it was lowkey embarrassing when I started my car in the parking structure. The cold start is pretty damn loud, sounds like a disconnected midpipe.
I went to SQTT for a more quiet, mature sound, but it was not as advertised. It was definitely quieter than the Race on the outside, but in cabin was so loud.. The boomy bass was pretty unbearable, more deep than the Race surprisingly. The exhaust was definitely quieter than the Cobalt, but I expected this exhaust to be super quiet and it was pretty disappointing. The top end of this exhaust sounded okay, but for the price, I couldn't justify my purchase.
Then I got the HKS and this is exactly what I was looking for. It is barely louder than stock , maybe 10%. You will notice that it's deeper, but it not intrusive at all. There is absolutely no drone and the bass compliments the exhaust tone. It almost sounds like stock, but the tone is more sporty. If they made a Mazdaspeed Miata, I'd imagine the exhaust sounding like the HKS.
If you are looking for a complete transformation in exhaust tone, HKS Legamax Premium is not the way to go. If you are looking for a more mature evolution of the stock exhaust tone, get the HKS. This will be the last exhaust installed on my car.

@@vitreoushumor One thing to note is when you turn on the car for the first time after install, it's going to sound quieter than stock! But don't lose hope because the exhaust packing must be pretty dense from the factory. You'll start hearing a difference every day for just over a week and then you'll gradually start to realize how great it sounds. The craftsmanship on the muffler is second to none as well, you'll know you got a premium product.
I really hope you enjoy the exhaust like I do since a nice exhaust tone is such a subjective matter. Let me know what your experience when it's all said and done.

@@pchae1 I got mine installed sir and after 200 miles it is perfect. I swear it's quieter at 3000rpm cruise but man it's nice opening it up. Absolutely not too loud and it's so well made. I am in love. Thank you again!

@@vitreoushumor I’m really glad to hear, welcome to the club! I believe you still have a few more miles for it to get louder. It’s nice to hear the purr and not have drone. Glad you went this route.

I gotta say, this is the best video I've seen with regard to demonstrating what the exhaust would sound like. Comparison to OEM, no wind noise, revving in neutral, standard acceleration, spirited acceleration, downshifts, cruising. Well done.

It isn't bad by any mean but the HKS one sounds superb, not obnoxious or anything.

I recently bought this for my 2020 ND2 RF and I am super happy with it. At start up the extra note and slight increase in volume is a welcome addition over stock.
In normal driving it is very similar to stock, but above 4000rpm and beyond it comes alive beautifully and adds a nice snarl to the engine note.
It doesn't drone at highway speeds (2500rpm in 6th, 100kmh/60mph). I would describe it as an OEM+ sort of sound.
Overall I'm absolutely thrilled with it!

It's too close to factory in my opinion. Why spend all that $$ for such a similar sound?

Late answer but all the other exhausts are / will get too much of a boomier sound. The HKS is perfect according to the buyers.

They're basically the same base sound with the difference of a bassy after sound on the HKS and some gurgles here and there

How many miles do you have on the exhaust when you create this video? Like everyone else, its very difficult to hear the difference of this compare to stock. I get your point when you say a little bit bassy but can you tell if this sounds premium the first time? From 1-10, 10 being the highest, what score could you give this compared to stock? Its more than 5yrs now... hoping u still got the ND c",)
