I'm curious what the Geneva drive does just to the left of the drum? It looks like it advances one step for each cycle of the melody. I would assume it lets the box know when to stop playing, but it's got a large cam that will eventually block the movement?
it rotates through the movements so only the three will play and it will stop, instead of running until the key winds down. I hope that helps! thanks so much for watching
O wow! What an arrangement! I guess the quality would be even better when I stand in front of it. The camera, recorder, whatever doesn't pick up the low notes that well.
Ah! What a wonderful melody! It is pleasant and enjoyable to hear the melodies played by music-box. Some antique mechanical musical clocks played tune on built in music-boxes to mark the hours. Some of them only played melodies for each hour without striking the hours. Some of them played melodies melody followed by striking the number of hours on bell or gong. Nowadays these types of music-boxes and chiming clocks are electronically imitated by some quartz clocks because they contains electronically recorded and programmed circuit board of sound chips connected to speaker.
I restored old music boxes for 10 years. The screws for fixing the musical movement are too short, if they were longer the sound of this music box would be better.
The older movements of this size had thinner base plates, thus it was necessary for the screws to go nearly all the way through. The base plate on this movement is 8 mm (~3/8") thick, so I'd say the screws are penetrating 1/4" or so, which would be plenty to hold the movement very tightly to the sounding board.
Ive adored these beautifull music boxes since i was a child, yours is indeed lovely, and Die Moldau iis special to me, so there you go.
thankyou!
