Pierce Brothers Westwood Village Memorial Park and Mortuary is a cemetery and mortuary located in the Westwood area of Los Angeles. It is located at 1218 Glendon Avenue in Westwood, with an entrance from Glendon Avenue.
The cemetery was established as Sunset Cemetery in 1905, but had been used for burials since the 1880s. In 1926, the name was officially changed to Westwood Memorial Park and was later changed again to Pierce Brothers Westwood Village Memorial Park & Mortuary.
Although it is the resting place of some of the entertainment industry's greatest names, it also contains the graves of many uncelebrated people. For example, when Marilyn Monroe died in 1962, Joe DiMaggio, responsible for Monroe's arrangements, chose Westwood not because of its celebrities but because it was the resting place of her mother's friend, Grace Goddard, and Goddard's aunt, Ana Lower, both of whom had cared for Monroe as a child.
Roy Kelton Orbison (April 23, 1936 - December 6, 1988) was an American singer, songwriter, and guitarist known for his distinctive and powerful voice, complex song structures, and dark, emotional ballads. Orbison's music is mostly in the rock genre and his most successful periods were in the early 1960s and the late 1980s. He was nicknamed "The Caruso of Rock" and "The Big O". Many of Orbison's songs conveyed vulnerability at a time when most male rock-and-roll performers projected machismo. He performed with minimal motion and in black clothes, matching his dyed black hair and dark sunglasses. He wrote or co-wrote almost all of his own Top 10 hits, including "Only the Lonely" (1960), "Running Scared" (1961), "Crying" (1961), "In Dreams" (1963), and "Oh, Pretty Woman" (1964).
On December 6, 1988, he spent the day buying parts for model airplanes with his bus driver and friend Benny Birchfield and ate supper at Birchfield's home in Hendersonville (Birchfield was married to country star Jean Shepard). After the meal, Orbison went to his mother's house and chatted with his son Wesley. He went to the bathroom, but did not return for 30 minutes. He was found collapsed on the bathroom floor and was rushed to the hospital by ambulance, where he died of a heart attack at the age of 52.
A public memorial attended by friends, family and fans was organised by friend Jean Shepard and held at the Cellege Heights Baptist Church in Gallatin, Missouri on December 11th. In Los Angeles, Barbara Orbison organised a "Celebration of Life" attended by friends and celebrities at the Wiltern Theatre on December 13th. Orbison's body was buried at Westwood Village Memorial Park Cemetery in an unmarked grave.
Frank Vincent Zappa[nb 1] (/ˈzæpə/ ZAP-ə; December 21, 1940 - December 4, 1993) was an American musician, composer, and bandleader. In a career spanning more than 30 years, Zappa composed rock, pop, jazz, jazz fusion, orchestral and musique concrète works; he also produced almost all of the 60-plus albums that he released with his band the Mothers of Invention and as a solo artist. His work is characterized by nonconformity, improvisation sound experimentation, musical virtuosity and satire of American culture. Zappa also directed feature-length films and music videos, and designed album covers. He is considered one of the most innovative and stylistically diverse musicians of his generation.
Zappa died from prostate cancer on December 4, 1993, at his home with his wife and children by his side. At a private ceremony the following day, his body was buried in a grave at the Westwood Village Memorial Park Cemetery, in Los Angeles. The grave has since been unmarked. On December 6, his family publicly announced that "Composer Frank Zappa left for his final tour just before 6:00 pm on Saturday".

They basically dig a hole 12 feet deep when they bury 2 people. My wife is buried at rose hills and when it’s my time to go I’m going to be buried on top of her pretty much. we also have an option for a 3rd person but that person would have to be cremated and buried with the second person.

I spoke with Roy Orbisons son Alex about 5 years ago and he told me they had a headstone made that was supposed to be in the shape of a Guitar but when he went with his brothers Wesley and Roy jr to approve it Alex said it looked more like a Mandolin then a guitar so they refused it. But he told me they will get him one soon. But that was 5 years ago and obviously the grave still doesn't have one.

They might have spent the money to get one Replaced/Reordered?? Or they just didn’t want to spend the money, especially since it’s been this long. No one will ever know. OR just maybe he didn’t want a headstone 🪦 ?
What I enjoy in your videos is seeing the brief snippets that you show as the camera pans around and you see the names of bygone stars. For that brief moment I have a memory of movies, songs and shows that the star was in and how they related to different times in my life. Thanks Scott!
FWIW, When I serviced the burglar alarm years ago, a worker told me: “Zappa? Go to Bettie Page, then 4 graves left, and forward to the only open space. Can’t miss it”. I missed it. 🥴
During his lifetime I'm sure Roy didn't forget to purchase his family members cars, houses, and vacations... but they forgot his headstone for three decades.
bonus fact: He had a house next door to Jonny Cash in Hendersonville, TN.
They were the best of friends. After two of Roy's son's were killed in the house fire, Johnny bought the property, promising never to build anything on it. It's now an orchard, with a historical marker on site.

But was he though? I do love him as a person. He was honest about the entertainment industry, the politics that's in it. Etc. He's fascinating to listen to. He had cahunas and he didn't care about your position in life or who you are. Very cool as a person. Never understand his music though.

I'm thinking that if Roy had stated he did not want a headstone, then that would be what the family would have announced, rather than 'taking a break' or whatever. I kinda dig that no one knows exactly where Frank is buried. I think that he would have liked it that way. Safe travels, Scott.

I think if Roy Orbison had said he didn’t want a stone the family would have said that instead of coming up with dumb excuses about not getting around to it. I mean that doesn’t put them in a great light. I’m surprised his wife never did it though.

Interesting Fact: His 2nd wife Barbara died the same day Roy died, 23 years later. They both died on the 6th December.
Roy Orbison was an artist I never paid attention to as a child when my mother would play his records. Once he joined the Travelling Wilburys when I was in my early 20's then I came to appreciate his music and his talent.

I feel bad when people don't have headstones. It doesn't matter to me whether I knew them or not. I just feel like every decent living human being deserves to be remembered when they pass away. It's one thing if the person requested not to have a stone but to say life got in the way is just heartless to me. Either way, may both of these greats continue to RIP ❤💐❤️💐

Dude, the Orbison family is to busy enjoying the money he left him. I wouldn't be surprised if they blew their inheritance, and can't afford his headstone. That's how it is with some celebs "loved" ones. And also why ya see so many celebrities with tiny markers , instead of headstones. Money. Those pots of flowers do good enough for Orbisons fam, as long as they live a good life 🫤🙄

I've been there twice, the first time was in 2016 and the second time was in 2017. I had heard that Frank Zappa was buried under a tree, and was under the assumption that he is buried on the east side of the cemetery near Burt Lancaster. I'm probably wrong, though.

Unless it's in their final wishes, it really bothers me there is no headstone. When my grandpa passed a gew years ago, I knew my fa.ily was too dysfunctional to care about a marker, took care of it myself, installed within 3 months. Of course, that pissed off my aunt and uncle. I was closer to my grandpa then they were. Rant over.

I just read an article and it said that Orbison doesn't have a marker because his grave was intended to be temporary. I'm not sure if it is 100% true because, why bury his wife there too if his was going to be temporary.

You look around and they're all flat stones so the family doesn't have to make a big choice. Some cemetaries have that rule for mowing easier. That is odd. Must be a money thing.

Doubt it with regard to to Zappa. My uncle was a roadie for him & said he was a huge egomaniac. I'm sure he knew not having a headstone would have people looking for it. So much for not wanting to be remembered.
Back in the early nineties I visited this cemetery and both had markers or stones if you will ,Some years later they were removed .
