Everyone knows how truly great Holdsworth was, but damn, Gambale has some serious chops as well. Love the two of them playiing off of each other. This is just brilliant.
@@paulsimon6544 i wouldn't go so far to say gambale sounds lost, but it is unfair to compare anyone to holdsworth! we can all agree on that. in saying that, however, gambale has great skill and tears it up on this album.
Gambale was one of the few players who could hold his own with Allan but when Allan took off there was no one who could ever catch him. We could only watch like seeing a rocket head for the stars, staring and wondering at what it was like to be that high above the world.
I did the artwork for Mark for the MVP albums and his subscription guitar audio magazine back then. Frank Gambale was a great player, still is. Alot of great music went down in that era. Unfortunately his brother Mike Varney is the one who made decent money, practically inventing the shred guitar record company. The music still seems pretty fresh even now, its nice to see people appreciate these incredible talents.
This was Mark Varney's supplied artwork, honestly I didn't think it related to the music at all, but I was told to use it. Its not particularly good and doesn't represent the quality of the music in the CD. The goal of good graphic design and art direction is to grab the attention of a possible record buyer. You have literally 2 seconds to get a message into their brain so they will even look at the CD. This one just kinda screams "Walmart $1 CD bargain bin." I had alot of the same arguments with his brother Mike. If the music is of such high extreme quality as this album was, the cover needs to reflect that, with high quality imaging conceptualizing. I'd say maybe 30% of the work I did for Shrapnel is work I'd be proud to show, the rest were ideas I disagreed with, but did the best I could under the circumstances. Not that this is unusual, most of my career was battles to give the customer something better than they could possibly imagine themselves, but they pay the bills and if they insist you do a bad idea, you do it or don't get paid.
Sounds frustrating! I agree that it looks kinda dull and doesn't really hint to how awesome this album is. The tesseract is kinda cool though, perhaps that could have worked on it's own? Or maybe not, I'm really not a designer haha. Anyways thanks for a nice story.

One thing that absolutely amazes me about Holdsworth is how incredibly his solos are structured. It’s almost like a symphony with different movements, repeated but altered themes interwoven throughout the solo, and peaks and valleys, all in the course of a few minutes. RIP Maestro.
Frank's solo on the first track is out of this world, the feeling a raw energy of it. The inventor of sweep picking as we know it today, he is playing even better now than back then. Allan was my favorite guitarrist before I heard Gambale, still love him with his legado technique. But if you wanna talk phrasing I think of Scott Henderson and Pat Metheny.
@@ShivaKumar-gs7nb Scott, like most great guitarists who do have amazing musical phrasing, knows that Holdsworth was the only guitarist to reach the peak he did, of impossibly great playing in every aspect, with beautiful phrasing the most important ingredient, but also obviously, mastery of subtle expressions of slight to dramatically wide pitch variations adding a rich dimension to the music, uncanny timing, fat butter smooth tone, wide intervallic lines in contrast to lots of chromatic passing tones a few seconds prior or after, and everything else that goes into being the greatest player. Holdsworth was the only person that had that genius combination of ideas and the skills to put them across that we were incredibly lucky to see. He simply set the highest bar ever for guitar, and I doubt anyone will reach it again in my life; once is ridiculously lucky already.
We used to go see Frank play at La Ve Lee on ventura around this this time with Otmaro, Alphonso and Walfredo. Allan would play At My Place in Santa Monica or Catalina in hollywood back then. Some great years for this music...

Great stuff. Love Frank’s sound instantly recognizable. Allan too, of course. That’s the kinda fusion I can actually listen too. Very cool. 🎸
All these guys know a thing or two about phrasing....thank you Alexis big time.
Allan's phrasing is on par with Scott for sure. Sorry Pat can't hang with these two...especially phrasing.
@@Gregorypeckory absolutely. As far l'm concerned McLaughlin and Holdsworth are top dogs !!
@@ShivaKumar-gs7nb Pat Metheny can tell a story and is second to none, well maybe to Frank.
I love this. It smacks of Chick Corea and the Elektric Band and Return to Forever. and I totally agree with Billy TheKidd's comments.
Frank is Chick Corea’s favorite guitar player. I was fortunate to see them back in 1985
Some of these gems are even upraised by these guys. Rocks, Ana Maria, Bathsheba... Unearthly.
First 5 mins you realise why the best guitarists follow Mr. Frank Gambale.
i ve been looking this album for about 20 years. Thank you so much man, You made my day...
enjoy buddy
We used to go see Frank play at La Ve Lee on ventura around this this time with Otmaro, Alphonso and Walfredo.
Allan would play At My Place in Santa Monica or Catalina in hollywood back then. Some great years for this music...
My god these boys are playing their asses off! Gambale and Holdsworth are a match made in guitar heaven on this album.
Man I study this album... Inspiration at it core.. Chops for days.. Holdsworth and Gambale... Wow just wow..
One of my favorites records!

Love this album! Wish it was on Apple Music tho.
This is just divine. Sir Allan was god!

This is peak guitar right here.
