Oh, I'm in so much trouble. I just bought my first two, which have yet to arrive; but looking at this video, I need like...all of them. That red flower...! 😍
They’re so much fun!
Very informative video! I have several carnivorous plants, but I just bought my first ping. I feel very prepared now after watching this.
So informative. I recently lost one of my pings and it broke my heart so I’m desperate to keep my last one alive. I always hate losing one of my plants. Once I’m ready for another one, I know where I’m shopping ❤️❤️❤️
I bought a few from Curious Plant, they've done well. I've noticed they do better under a 1000w or 2000w grow light. I've also been watering mine with a syringe under the leaves, so the water gets to the roots. I don't bottom water them. I bottom water sundew's and fly traps, but not pings. All mine are Mexican pings though.
@@700NitroXpress 1000w or 2000w?? Homie that’s waaaaay too much I think you got your numbers wrong
@@koraysblog they list them under total capacity, but the run wattage is lower. They've actually been working well.
Love all the information! So much in just a 8/9 minute video!!!
Thank you!
Thank you, this answered all my questions.
I just got my first ping and honestly didn't do enough research beforehand so this video is amazing thank you!
I’m so glad it was helpful! Happy growing!
I do so love pings!! Got some pirouettes starting to blush now :3
Great vid, thanks!
Thank you so much! I bought my first 3 this afternoon. Hopefully with your advice I can keep them alive!
Happy growing!
Your videos are so great! Informative, and I love love love seeing you amazing plants! Thank you for sharing!
Can’t wait for my ping window sill kit!
Excellent advice. Thanks!!
My work uses a lot of DIW with less than 1 part per trillion of anything in it. It doesn't get more pure than that really. I got a couple of Mexican pings recently, hoping that they catch a lot of the small bugs that come in through the doors.
After a couple months of watering with 20MΩ DIW, all of my carnivorous plants are growing like weeds and flowering profusely. I've even been using it to water my bonsai trees and they have the richest green leaves I've ever seen. I want to run some experiments with DIW, distilled water, and rain water on the same types of plants and see if there's measurable changes in growth and foliage.
Love the videos.....thank you
The moment I saw the single purple flowers on solitary stalks, I fell in love. These little babies are so adorable.
Anyone else got a venom add and freaked out? Amazing video btw :)
🤣 thank you!
Just so you know, in the UK pinger is a common name for MDMA
😳😂
Great video! I want a ping so bad but already have 4 neps, two dundews and a Cephalotus from gou guys, im not sure i have anymore soom 😆 and i really want the pink and purple ones and worry i cant get the lighting right... But this video just tempts me further 😭
The pings are so fun to grow! If you decide to try it, go for lilac lollipop or cherry bomb and you’ll have great color!
@@California_Carnivores ended up with Lilac Lollipop and Cotton Candy 🥰 that Lilac one really caught my eye as soon as I saw it on your website! I love them!!
Really helpful video! A question: I bought a ping (gigantea) about a month ago and it has holes in some of the leaves now! What should I do to save my plant?
(I use distilled water, bottom/ tray watering most times, with careful top watering occasionally, it's on a sunny windowsill)
You may have some sneaky pest in hiding under your plant like a small snail. I would do a search. The holes could just be related to normal die back of leaves but often it’s an opportunist taking a nibble.
I recently, and rather foolishly, blindly bought two Pinguicula Weser plants, I just fell in love with them! But i noticed transit had made their leaves not very sticky, so I've been watering them with rain water, but mistng them too just to help them get back on track.
But now im worried since i forgot to change the water in the spray bottle to rain water. I've only been spraying them a little for a few days. They look really happy, both currently sprouting new leaves, but I'm worried I may have hurt them.
Have i killed my pings or am i being dramatic?? Lmao💀💀
They should be okay! I wouldn’t keep misting them as they don’t need it and it can actually gently push the dew off the leaves but they sound like they’re really happy!
I bought 2 pings last month. Not sure of the variety. The leaves doesn't have any sticky dew on them. They are growing lots of new roots. I top up the water in the tray when it gets very low. Humidity is about 60-70 and it gets lots of natural light. Is it succulent phase or am I doing something wrong? Thank you.
It could just be that they’re in the succulent phase or they may need a little more light. You can always email us photos of your plants through our website and we can take a look!
Are these pet friendly like other carnivorous plants?
They are but cats do sometimes like to like them. The cats will be fine, but the pings hate it 😂
I think you mistakenly said *don’t* use perlite and peat mix for pinguicula, because that is what your mix on the website has for this plant. Let us know if that was a mistake.
We should have a ping mix on our website that has some peat and perlite but it’s in a lesser ratio than our peat and perlite mix!
Would butterworts be a good option for a closed terrarium ecosystem? It will have bugs inside, mainly springtails.
You’ll have to watch for rot and mold, a closed terrarium can be very humid and that’s a delicate balance for them. I recommend Drosera prolifera or adelae for a build like that!
@California_Carnivores thank you for the reply 🤍
Do they go into succulent phase on their own though if grown entirely under artificial lights and is it absolutely required for them to do so?
They often will go into that mode even under artificial lights but it is not necessary!
@@California_Carnivores okay good. I’ve heard some people say it’s required and that they’ll slowly weaken without it
@@RCmaniac1231 it is in temperate plants like Venus flytraps and sarracenia but not in pings!
i’ve brought 4 so far and only one is still alive i notice the react well to rain water but they aren’t growing
They do love rain water! You may need more light for your plants - you can always send us a photo of your plants through our website and we can try to trouble shoot!
@@California_Carnivores all four of them died i put them under some growlights and only used distilled water
I am a newbie at keeping butterworts and bought one of your $45 kits with 3 pings. They are doing great and catching lots of fungus gnats. Do the fungus gnats get dissolved over time? The gnats on mine don't seem to be dissolving away and it has been about 3 weeks since they trapped the gnats. Or do I have to clean them off occasionally?
It just leaves the indigestible exoskeleton. The liquified insides are only digested. You should leave it. The leaves will die later anyway and new ones will grow instead.
I just got a ping about a week ago, she’s maybe an inch in diameter and I was wondering what type of humidity they like? I have her in a bag because I’m scared that my room might be too dry even though I live in a very humid environment. Could I take her out of the bag?
Start opening the bag to acclimate it to the room but you’ll need to take a day or two to acclimate it now that it’s been in so much humidity. Pings appreciate humidity but don’t require it. As long as you keep the soil well watered, it should be good!
Can you use a string-wicking system with Pinguiculas?
You can but we have experimented with it over the years and found it often does not keep the plants as wet as they would like in the summer so you will need to keep a close eye on them and water additionally as needed
I have well, but it bad so I have a water softener system, but because that’s not enough I have a RO water filter for drinking water- would the RO water that I drink be okay to use for the plants? Or does the the water softener remove too much?
That would be perfect for your plants! They love RO wayer
Hello, Can i grow my pings out in full sun ? thanks
Usually not. It really depends on your area. They grow primarily in Central America but even there, they grow in specific areas so it’s hard to mimic.
Can I use carnivorous soil to repot the primrose butterwort? I just got one today and I have some leftover carnivorous soil so I wasn’t sure if I could use it or not.
Yes! Pinguicula primuliflora does well in a peat moss heavy mix.
@@California_Carnivores ok thank You. I found 7 baby pings up under the big one so I used the rest of the carnivorous soil to plant all of them!
Is P. Tina needs the same care as Mexican P.?
Yes!
@@California_Carnivores Yay! Thanks.
Hello Daniella! I just recently bought my first order of sundews, vft and sarracenia from CalCarn. I’m now addicted and I I blame you guys lol 😂 I gotta stop watching so much RUclips! I am truly enjoying my bog though. But now, I’m interested in pings! I’ll be needing some intervention! Lol 😅 What is the level of difficulty for a beginner? I watched the video on ping kits and it was mentioned that those are not for the beginner. Also, what color of light spectrum is best for in house growing? Full daylight or pinkish?
The Windowsill Ping Kit is great! You can totally take that on as a beginner and you’ll learn a lot! The pings are so fun and weird and beautiful!
Great! I added a question about lighting after your response. What color of light is best? Full daylight or pink?
@@rrginnydworchak Pink is often the best for the plants but it’s…a lot to live with in your home environment 😂 it’s like having a night club for plants! And it’s only a little bit more exciting to the plants so if you like the quality of the daylight light better, get it!
Please answer my questions pls. Can I fertilize my Venus fly traps with any cactus fertilizer?
I recommend using MaxSea fertilizer diluted. 1/4 teaspoon into 1 gallon of water.
@@California_Carnivores umm sorry I live in Burma and we are not really well developed like the US so we don’t have maxsea here 😭😭😭
@@California_Carnivores I you can, can you sell me some seeds and fertilizers from your website please!
@@kyawthuta9058 if they’re outside they’ll catch enough bugs that they won’t need fertilizer
@@georgetrevor8167 I put them outside but, I mean vft don’t catch that much bugs as you know sarracenia or Nepenthes and here they don’t catch any bugs!
Butterwort is ok, in german we call them Fatweed 😂
I’m really interested in that salmon colored ping Damon was talking about. Hopefully you guys can create a similar new cultivar or maybe even find one of the original ones!
The supplier I got mine from said literally everything OPPOSITE and now I'm very confused lol
Said to keep them in a saucer of water, which can be tap, outside of direct sunlight, and recommended entirely different soil 😭
There’s a lot of different growing techniques and it could be that where you bought yours from knows that the tap water in your area happens to be safe to use (which would be very lucky!) in general you can keep Mexican and tropical pings sitting in water in the summer and they love a sunny windowsill indoors and they do need a really dry soil mix. But if you got a temperate or warm temperate ping, they do like a more peaty mix!
Good information. But wow ur prices om ur web page are so expensive no way will I pay over a hundred dollars for a plant. I got my pitcher plant at Lowes for eight dollars and my fly trap there doing good. Even know Amazon I've seen plants like theses from others less then what u charge.
I’m happy to hear that our videos have been helpful! There is definitely a big price range on our plants! But we do have many plants starting at just $10 😊 Plants that are in the $100+ range may have taken 30 years to make if they’re Nepenthes! And many of our more expensive plants take years of work to grow and are very, very special. So that’s why they’re quite expensive.
Really informative video
I usually let my water sit for 24 hours. Would that still hurt my ping?
That unfortunately won’t remove the salts and minerals that are the issue. You can get a TDS meter at your local hardware store and test your water though to see what it’s naturally measuring at! Anything under 50ppm is good for pings
Question. So I should not have my Pinguicula in moss? I should plant it in dirt? Also thoughts about if algae starts to grow on the moss/potting mix on the top layer of moss/soil? Will it hurt the plant? I noticed a few of the leaves on my Pinguicula are kinda wilting and I'm not sure why. Any tips would be great! Thank you!
We don’t love moss off pings because of the trickiness in watering moss. Many people do like it but it holds too much moisture against the roots but also dries out very very easily so you have to be really on top of watering. Algae can happen on soil or moss and we never worry about it, it’s natural and normal on boggy plants. But with pings they do like to dry out a bit between watering and like intense light so if you have algae it could be a sign that they need more light or are too wet
@@California_Carnivores okay, so I should maybe try a rocky soil mix to help retain less water and maybe get a brighter grow light? Would you recommend spraying the top of the Pinguicula to keep leaves more moist?
I have a Pinguicula 'Pirouette'
@@MikkelSimons I would switch out the soil, it should be a bit happier. And you can set the pot in water. But I would recommend against misting the plant as it knocks the sticky dew off of the leaves
I've recently bought my first 'ping' too. It's been a cool July, and now a cool August here in England, but in spite of this it's already sending up flower stalks (in my greenhouse).
I'm hoping someone from the California carnivores team or the community can help me clarify if my "plumb fairy" ping is of the mexican/ tropical variety. I recently bought my first carnivorous plant ( the ping i'm referring to) and i want to be prepared to care for it when it arrives. thank you to whoever can help clarify this for me
That is a Mexican/tropical Pinguicula! 😊
Regarding the Schultz Cactus Fertilizer, do you still apply it during the winter/succulent phase?
They lose the carnivorous leaves at that time, and yet are not truly dormant (and can even flower?) in this form, so I just want to know if I should continue on with foliar feeding.
We generally stop fertilizing in winter to prevent rot
I planted my ping in spagnum moss before watching this video. Do you think that will be okay?
Some pings do well in sphagnum moss and yours may really like it, I’d just watch it and see how it does!
Which Mexican doesn't go into a succulent phase?
Gigantea and emarginata!
I have a Venus flytrap, I want to get either a butterwort or a sundew to help catch gnats in my house. Which one would you recommend? I'm leaning more towards the sundew because I like the way it looks but I want which ever one will get rid of gnats better
They’re both very effective but I would recommend the sundew; cape sundews can grow quite large, make lots of leaves and can even catch houseflies!
My ping seems to be in its succulent phase since Nov (its mid-May) is that based on temperature/climate? I'm sure mine is Mexican but I'm on the coast in the Bay Area so it's quite cool year round. And wow I've left mine in water the entire time it was dormant because that's what the shop said 🤦🏾♀️
Pings are a wee bit stubborn and sometimes will stay in succulent phase way past winter. Give them lots of sun, sit them in water and apply Schultz cactus fertilizer once per month to try to encourage them to come out of it.
I know you'e done videos about not always tray watering pings--was wondering if you could expand on that a bit--how to top water, how often (or how to know it's time to add water to a pot that has no drainage)
I’ll add that to the list of videos to do!
Can you also use the cactus fertilizer on nepenthes and orchids?
You can definitely use it on the orchids and you should be able to use it on the Nepenthes although we have not experimented with that yet
Hi! Great video, just a quick question, is all mineral good for propagating with leaf cuttings? :)
Sharlynne Go you can use rooting hormone but minerals are not good for Pinguicula
What grow lights do you recommend for them and how long should the grow light be on during the day?
Yescom makes a great light. It’s available on Amazon and it’s a little square paneled LED light. Keep them on a 12 hour cycle
could I use that shcults for vfts
You probably could but we have not experimented with it
Hi! Do you apply disease ex or bioadvanced on them?
We have not applied those to these plants
@@California_Carnivores thank you for the reply. Your pings are amazing!
I bought soil from you but how do you get the mossy top in the pot?
The moss grows in our pots because we have so much growing in the nursery that easily spreads through spores. Often times, when growing plants outside you’ll find that moss will grow on your peat moss as it is spreading from spores there as well!
@@California_Carnivores is this a good thing I should leave alone or should I try to take it off before planting in her new pot?
@@kikisbees1123 We like the low growing moss for a few reasons; it holds in moisture, looks nice, reduces advantageous weed germinating, and protects the soil from being washed out of the pots by rain
THANK YOU ENDLESSLY FOR THIS!!!! I AM that plant addict, who has been too nervous to try carnivorous plants. I finally got my little Pinguicula today, and trying to find consistent information on them has been hard. This was so clear and helpful! THANK YOU!!!
Yay! I’m so glad!
