    "Making the second layer of planking"
    Building a ship model of the HMS PEGASUS (1776) in scale 1:64. Kit manufactured by the Italian company Amati. Here I share my personal impressions of the kit and results.
    HMS Pegasus was the sixth of 25 Swan Class ship rigged sloops ordered by the Admiralty between 1766 and 1780. Built at Sheerness Dockyard, Pegasus was launched on December 27th, 1776.

    I really enjoy your builds, very calming and very informative. Keep doing what you're doing. Its great.
    Like a few others Im still confused on your planking calculations. I have read your blog, but it doesnt explain how you come up with your numbers. I see you get the measurement in mm on the 4 areas (max, min, bow, stern). Then you divided the max by 4.2 (the width of the 10 planks) the 2 sections next to the max you divide the length by half (2.1), and the bow back to 4.2, why?
    When making the tick strips you show using 3.6 for each tick at the bow... where did that number come from and how do you calculate for the other sections. Thank you so much for doing this. It really helps us beginners see the techniques that work and how to do them.

    • @OlhaBatchvarov
      @OlhaBatchvarov  4 месяца назад

      Let me try to simplify the explanation!
      - First you need to count the number of planks on the largest frame (which is obviously the midship frame). That is, I divide the length of the frame by the width of my planks.
      - All other frames will have the same number of planks, only narrowed. Therefore, I divide the length of the frames by the number of planks on the midship frame.
      - The exception will be the bow and stern, depending on the design of the ship, you will have to drop the planks in the bow or add short ones in the stern...

    П.с. у Амати огромная ошибка по корпусу по сравнению с реальной теорией. Я на своей модели сделал рангоут из расчета 1:64 хотя исходя из длины корпуса тут ближе 1:50. Чертежи рантгоута могу вам прислать.

      П.с. у Шевелёва есть возможность заказать стволы в замен (литьевевые формы у него уже есть). Ещё момент медь чем-то покрыта, и это покрытие пожалуй стоит удалить заранее, на модели запарился чистить, при контакте с ЦА покрытие размягчается и чернеет.

    Hi there, I am just about to embark on the 2nd planking of my Cladercraft Granado and have watched this several times and read the blog. One question I still have is do you calculate the width of the planks right at the stem of the model or do you just run a line from the point the plank needs to start thinning through the plank width you calculated at the first orange tick line on the model and just let the width of the plank at the stem adjust accordingly? Also, is the waterline you mark on the sketch just an estimate of where it will be or do you measure it on the model and then transfer it to the plan? Thank you for the videos and continued inspiration! Jon

    • @OlhaBatchvarov
      @OlhaBatchvarov  Год назад +1

      This is not a plan, but a scheme, so the waterline is tentatively drawn. I only count the number of planks on the middle frame, and the planks themselves will tell you the rest: where to start narrowing, etc., you just need to stick to the width you calculated on the rest of the frames and not narrow more or less than the calculated...

    Amazing video, as always!
    Olha, a question.
    If I only want to make 1 layer of planking, how do I do to make the nail holes disappear, without losing the "wooden" finish of the hull????
    I want to make a wooden hull, but If i use nail, holes will appear.... If I use some putty to hide it, I lose the "wooden" appearance.
    And the kits I bought have no 2 layering... Don't want to spend more in buying more planks... hehehe
    Any tips? thanks a lot!!!!! You're a big inspiration, thank you for the videos.

    • @OlhaBatchvarov
      @OlhaBatchvarov  2 года назад +1

      Thank you very much!
      You can make a single-layer planking, but I warn you that it will be three times slower and ten times more difficult to do... You can glue the planks with a soldering iron or a small iron (for this, it is better to fill the spaces with linden or basswood wood, then the planks can be bent directly on the hull for using the same soldering iron). The second option is to make clamps, as in this video, but more reliable, because you can fasten them only on the frames...

    I've been building scale models from paper for many years.
    Wondering to try myself in sailship modelling. I found Your videos most informative and best tutorial so far. Very greatful You find time to shear Your experience with all of us!
    Btw, why it is needed two layers of planking if everything will be covered in copper plates?

    • @OlhaBatchvarov
      @OlhaBatchvarov  6 месяцев назад

      Thank you!
      The first layer is to create a perfect surface. And the second is already the planks that will be visible (partially, even under the plates). Or modelers imitate copper plates from paper or simply paint with paint (metallic copper)...

    Hi Olha, want to thank you for the videos you have done on ship building, but do have a question,. Have watched all your ship building videos, some three or four times, but do you have a video on doing the measuring and calculations on planking. Sorry not a math person here, but will keep watching videos on planking you have done on ships, (HMS Pegasus). Aagin thanks for all the great videos or have you done a book on ship modelers library that deals with planking and the measurement and calculations. Again thanks

    I have watched this video three times and I still do not understand the process with drawing out the 2 sides of the hull, how you determine how many planks are needed, how you determine where the pieces of paper you make the "tick marks" are laid out, and how you determine where to put your reference lines on the hull. Did you learn these techniques from a book, from another builder or learn them yourself through trial and error?

    Without ever making a ship I'm trying to understand the reason why you sometimes notch a plank into another one or use a shorter plank, is the issue the twisting of the plank not the bending ?

    • @OlhaBatchvarov
      @OlhaBatchvarov  2 года назад +1

      That's how it was on real ships because of the shape of the hull. Stealers to increase width at the stern and drop plank to reduce width at the stem.
