It looks like the matrix because the director saw dark city when it was in post production, liked the look, so used the same film stock, same lenses, same production designers, even used some left over sets from dark city. So it was definitely intentional.

Inception, Truman Show, Matrix.. whatever other movies you listed... this predates them all (Truman show came out later the same year).. its a big reason why Dark City is considered so underrated... It was doing things and tackling concepts that people are more likely to associate with subsequent movies. I don't want to say one movie did one thing or another better than the other because they're all great films, but Dark City just isn't as big of a pop culture reference as the other movies which is a shame :o

3:34, one of the things the movie has in common with Bladerunner, is the omission of narration in Director's Cut.

Some of the sets from "Dark City" were recycled and used in "The Matrix". They were both shot in Australia, and were Warner productions. You may recognise some Australian and New Zealand acrors in this, like Colin Friels from Water Rats, Bruce Spence (the gyro captain in "Mad Max II") as Mr Wall, and Richard O'Brien (Riff Raff from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show") as the delightfully sinister Mr Hand.

Why are you reading the synopsis for a movie you're just about to watch?
When Murdoch wakes up for the first time he knows NOTHING, and neither should we. He's born naked and blank in that tub and the whole rest of the movie is about discovering things, filling in the missing pieces.
By not waiting for the movie to unfold as intended you've already learned his name, that the room where he's awakened is a hotel, that there's been a string of murders, that he's the suspect, that he has no memory of them, and that he's going to encounter some characters called "the strangers".
You just learned it's an "Wanted man out to prove his innocence" movie.
Why? Was that really more fun than having it unfold a piece at a time?

One thing to keep in mind, the visual effects aren't impressive now, but back when the movie came out they were cutting edge and looked great to audiences back then.

Yet another movie with similar themes is David Cronenberg's 'eXistenZ' (1999), starring Jude Law, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Ian Holm and Willem Dafoe among others. It doesn't seem to be as well-liked as 'The Matrix' or even 'Dark City', but I recall at the time enjoying it more than 'The Matrix', possibly because of the top-notch cast. Even Cronenberg's best films aren't everyone's cup of tea, but there's almost always something interesting to find.

i think that the sort of bland nature of some of the acting was intentional. These are incomplete personalities, programmed with generic life experiences...really only a general outline of a personality without the nuances and complexities that an entire real life of experiences would bring, therefore, the way they express themselves is really kind of a bland caricature of a fully formed person. Also, did you notice that the main stranger, Richard O'Brien, was RifRaf, the guy behind The Rocky Horror Picture Show?

The reason why he has the flashback when he looks at the man selling the newspapers is that's the man who was behind the hotel desk and told him that he owed money for rent and a few scenes earlier when William Hurt went to the Hotel there was a different man behind the desk, the hotel man actually quotes himself even it's a different person.

I have that same fake furniture in my media room as well, but your drawer handles are lateral, whereas mine are concentric. (Good ol 2.5in/65mm handles that used to be white.)
[edit] God damn it, I forgot to make a point....: You could glue some 5 pence slats of hardwood to the undersides of those drawers, and the bottoms won't buckle/collapse. You could make that piece of furniture outlast you, for the price of 2 cans of energy drink. Think about it.

The Matrix was an "adapted" version of this. It had been speculated for yrs based on films sharing sets & a similar concept. The writer/director of DC recently came out & said they shared a producer, who was shopping the story before DC could be finished. That explains the timeline. As for a theory, I think this is an allegory for the world, & the strangers = oligarchs. It would take a lot more people than 1 to wake up & do something, but it's a cathartic fantasy.
