  • I was almost back to Kansas when I came up on boost in my 2012 Fiat 500 Abarth and it started shuddering. What's the next logical step? Make a video showing you everything that's wrong with it! Shouldn't take long to get this car sorted out but spark plugs were not the answer. I bought this sporty turbocharged coupe for only $3,000. This 2012 Fiat 500 Abarth was listed on FB Marketplace for $4,000 OBO, I asked how OBO is OBO, and the answer was $3,000 FIRM. I immediately PayPal'd the money to Brady and booked a flight to Tennessee to pick this car up. Once I got there the car ended up being way more fun than I anticipated, the 1.4L 4 cylinder Multiair engine from Dodge is crazy with a just a few bolt-ons. I can't wait to drive it 900 miles home and start working on it!
This Fiat 500 Abarth had an original sticker price of $22,700 just 7 short years ago and now it's an absolute enthusiast bargain. Here's the original window sticker if you want to see the equipment and options: bit.ly/500Abart...

    Common Questions:
What motorcycle do I ride? A few. Ducati 1198, Honda Fury, Honda Grom, Honda Ruckus
What do I do for a living? Make RUclips videos and work in enterprise data storage.
Can you wheelie? No, I suck.
Are you fast? Sort of. I suck mostly though.
Where can I keep up with you off the bike?

Facebook: WatchJRGo (or JRGo, FB hates my branding)
Do you go to school? College, for 2 classes.
Why do you ride so dangerously? What do mean? I was doing 25.
Do you go to the track? Of course, hopefully there will be videos in the future.
Do you play video games? No, but I might stream N64 Goldeneye at some point. Twitch: WatchJRGo
Are you afraid the police will watch your videos and arrest you? Something something evidence something something warrants and due process of law

Several things from the Broken Fiat Club experience:
    1. The flat spot in a 3rd (or 4th) gear pull is notorious on these cars, especially if it has a flash tune. It could be a host of issues.
    2. As far as the coils, if replacing them, go with the Bosch Alfa 4C coils not the Beru stock coils. Much better quality and better spark. Only need replaced if a stock coil has issues though.
    3. Check for leaking PCV which can cause engine stumbling as well.
    4. Boost leak test that puppy. Make sure there are no boost leaks!
    5. The vacuum lines leading to the wastegate actuator, are notorious for cracking at the rubber elbows. Check these.
    6. The wastegate actuator solenoid (located on front of the motor near the timing belt area) can become clogged up and cause issues (uncommon, but happens).
    7. At the mileage this car is at, there's a "secret" filter that should be changed, it's a "Multiair oil filter" located in on the left side of the cylinder head. Difficult to reach but can be changed without major hassle. It slowly clogs and is likely to be partially blocked with this many miles. If this filter is restricted, it can reduce oil flow to the multiair VVT system preventing full operation of the intake valves at high RPM.

#7 sounds like the engine designer at Subaru for the 2005-2007 Subaru Legacy GT strikes again. We got hit with 2 filters that even the dealership networks never knew existed and would swap 3 turbos in a car and have no clue why they keep dying almost instantly.

One is parked in our driveway, purchased 6 months ago. Ours is 80k miles, w/ no warranty and needed tires + had a torn axle boot but was in immaculate condition w/ bonus Fiat Madness ECM included: $7500 for your reference point. We've put nearly 6k miles on it without a problem. Subjectively, if comparing this against our C4 Corvette w/ 6-speed, it might actually give the Abarth the nod for being more fun. They're MUCH fun, a point & shoot hole-shot car that keeps me grinning.
Gripes (at least for 2013 model):
"Italian" driving position: steering wheel too far when pedals in best position.
Seat headrests jut forward, can't get comfortable & would suck if I had to wear a helmet. Slippery leather.
Tachometer nearly impossible to read in daylight.
Beats Audio won't receive music from phone via bluetooth.
Beats Audio U.I. absolutely sucks for USB & MP3's.
Exhaust might be too loud for some (no muffler from factory!)
    Imprecise but acceptable shifter feel.
    Strengths:
Fiat Madness chiptune good for 195hp with 93 octane = FUN.
Quiet at interstate speeds if not romping on throttle.
Feels as solid as any Japanese car.
Corners on rails, encourages taking the holeshot on crowded interstates.
    Gorgeous interior.
The most unique budget sports car on sale in America today.

I have a 2013 with Beats. There is no bluetooth, that is why it does not work. Get a bluetooth adapter from Amazon and plug it into the line in, inside the glove box and power it from the USB connector in the glove box. Press on the "media" button on the radio to access the audio from that line in. Pair your bluetooth with the device you put in the glovebox and you are all set.

I have a 2013 Fiat 500 Pop, here is what I recommend checking. The wires that run behind the trunk lid get pinched and break. Bad design. Lubricate the door handle hinges. They break all the time. You can buy the hing online for less than $10. Fiat will try and sell you the whole handle. Careful with the arm rest, it breaks very easily.

Couple things; first, I own a regular 500 and it's still a blast, even minus the sixty extra horses. But you've got to learn that tiny cars don't afford much space for man-power either underneath them or inside the hood, if you don't you're going to have bloody knuckles all the time. Second; somebody has clearly monkeyed with the suspension. That not only may be the reason for your shudder, but also all that rubbing and cracking. More than likely they chopped the springs as opposed to going with a coil-over to drop it three inches, throw it up and check it out, bet I'm right.

It took the 02 sensor out of the direct exhaust path so it wouldn’t throw a code but still allowed it to heat up and see some exhaust to not throw a 02 sensor code. Never had an issue with it. If I recall I had to drill the hole in the first anti fouler larger to clear the probe of the 02 sensor.

There's little incentive to make anything last much longer than that since beancounters now trump engineers (don't get me started...). Upshot: anything more than the magic 100 thou is a bonus. Now when it comes to issues Fiat especially the 500L have some electric problems. It's nothing major but you know sometimes your UConnect-Infotaiment System can lag or your alarm just comes on randomly.

First off, that's not a lumbar adjuster. It's the mount for the driver's arm rest. Second, I'd rather you changed both hatch struts. You know the driver's side is not long for this world, they're cheap enough so do them in pairs.

My Abarth is a 2013, 113K miles. Just got it this week for $7800. It's been inspected twice. Cosmetically a bit of a wreck but mechanically perfect. Back seats sold, RIP armrest, paint faded roof and hood, sideskirts peeling off... at least the wheels are almost perfect and the electronics are all just fine.
There was one only a few miles a away with the same miles but perfect condition and it was listed at $15000, so I think I did ok. In time, I'll have her looking good again... Maybe after some tires and a timing belt.

John, have you tried Vibrant’s O2 sensor spacer? Put it on the downstream 02 sensor and it should fix your problem. It has multiple adjustable/removable jets to minimize the amount of exhaust gas that gets to the sensor.
I have an ‘03 IS300 with full exhaust from the head back...no cats, and with one of them on the downstream I get no check engine light and it passes emissions fine. I will get the P0420 pop back up about every 8-10,000 miles, but it clears fine every time.
Life saver for people with catless Lexus IS300’s like me, because in these cars if you have a check engine light for anything, your traction control and ESC shut off and your dash is lit up like a Xmas tree.

Uk here, it's important to change the engine oil regularly on the multiair engine as the oil has an additional role to play. The oil must meet FIAT 9.55535-S2, T2 specification, check the user manual, it must be the correct oil.
And the multiair engine is not a Dodge unit, its 100% FIAT.

People blame Italian reliability after abusing their car, I've owned 3 Alfa Romeo 147's and they're fantastic fun cars but their cheap second hand value is offset by the fact people don't replace worn out parts, especially the double wishbone suspension but these cars are not (contrary to popular belief) unreliable in my experience.

I had vibration on mine under boost and when the AC was on. It a warped radiator fan.
But don't buy a cheap one of these, just don't. I've had to replace sooo many worn out parts. They aren't very durable cars. A big flaw with them is the fixed rear axle slowly goes out of shape with use, so you end up with toe or camber being slightly off and you cannot correct it.
