  • DPS Units have a shorter Shelf life than everyone else, but to what extent is that true? Today I entertained that question and came to my own conclusion.

    This is the main reason I've started to describe the DPS in Star Rail more as a "treat" for your account. If you go after every new shiny DPS you'll run your bank account into the ground.
    There's always going to be a better DPS coming out so it's better to pull for a DPS you enjoy the kit they have or works specifically with the playstyle you like.
    Of course in end game you'll eventually have your favorite characters benched due to powercrep (or at the very least invest in supports to help them) but if you enjoy the character it be more fun to play as you struggle through the MoC as it gets harder.

      Instead of pulling a new DPS and therefor benching the old, you could pull for eidolons when the old character reruns, thus making their power level more on par with the new DPS.

      @@ulrikruby i just use on element dps characters and ive been good. most dps character will eventually turn meh off element (without e1 s1) but stay fine on element allowing to even clear MOC 12 with 4* dps characters. these cost a similar amount so its personal preference imo

    Kafka is the only unit that will literally never ever lose value. She IS the cornerstone of DoT. She will never get powercreept. Even if we get a 2nd DoT detonator who does more dmg than her or inflicts a new ailments etc. You could run them together. She's timeless.

      They could always release DOT character with DOT that can only be trigger by themselves. I mean part of BS kit doesn’t work with Kafka

    But you can't defeat MoC, Pure Fiction and even a story boss battle with Healer, Buffers and Tanks alone. That's a fact.

      I think you completely missed the point. Those characters are more unverisal and dont fall off as hard as dps units. Did blud say you can clear moc without a dps? Obvisouly not because that's dumbtarded

    New player who doesn't have Ruan Mei, Asta is goated in my dot teams. With Asta buff my blackswan has 194 speed.

    I think Tectone (you know the guy on whose podcast you went >.>") has best advice - pull for characters you like and not for meta, especially when it comes to DPS. ^^

    Rn I think pulling Harmony characters are more beneficial than pulling DPS cause of the insane amount of buffs they provide

    I mean isn't the reason the DPS have a shorter shelf life because more of them ere released? Ruan mei is still top tier because she only has 3 competitors (Ting Yun, Bronya and sparkle). When seele only had 3 competitors (Kafka, Blade and Jing Yuan), she was still top tier. The probleme is there are 4 classes of DPS (hunt, erudition, destruction and nihility) so the DPS get diluted quicker

      The difference is that all of em 3 are still really good lol, in order to powercreep em completely, you need a gimmick that's straight up better.
      Which they never full powercreep, cause it would end the game's life span in an instant. They usually just make either a completely different gimmick, or either a similar one with some differences like between Bronya or Sparkle.
      A DPS is easy to powercreep because of how basic the unit and by proxy, the thought process of it, which is make the most damage with little investment.
      That's it.

    Could just be the algorith, but I hadnt been getting any of you content in my recomended feed for some time, now ive had 2 in just a few days. In any case, good video, I nearly always agree with your takes, and these last videos solidified my decision to wait for Sam/Firefly rather than pulling Jingliu.

    I played since 1.0 and did a break from 1.3 all the way till 2.0 and my Seelee who was one shot one girl army now do dog s1it dmg. I couldn't beat bug from Ruan Mei mission for 2 months till I was forced to pull for Imaginary Dan Hang.. Just then I could beat her (had only Seelee, Kafka and Luocha then as limited 5* also)

    I think the endgame content should add more variety in it like they couldn't just make it based on turns (I'm still new at this game so i dont really know since I can't farm jades because i can't clear pure fiction)

    Yapp session incoming:
    Hoyovese could remedy this trap they set for themselves fairly easily if they wanted to. Which is to simply grow a fkn pair and start buffing units that are underperforming or simply phased out to simply reach the bar but not quite set it or surpass it. That way, they don't overshadow newer units. And i don't mean strictly speaking in terms of stats. I mean mechanism-wise. Case in point, Jingyuan, LL goes the second u aquire 10 stacks, and it can ignore cc the same way numby does and if u manage to finish a wave before he goes LL still goes 1st and not pushed all the way to the end of cycle.
    Remove seele's garbage ass "reduced taunt" trace and give her something like "when there are only elite or higher units on the field, seele does X amount more dmg" or something along those lines. Yanqing no longer has a fixed chance to do follow-up, and instead, it's guaranteed to proc follow-up and reduce his stupidly high energy cost a bit to where ERR can actually be strong on him especially if u have e2. Another is welt, have us choose whether we wanna bounce or single target with his skill and have his talent proc toughness dmg to lean further into the "sustain" way of playing em and cause it simply makes sense as an integral part of his kit. Also, change his eff res traces to something actually usable on a dps like crit rate or ehr in his niche case. Speaking of which, acheron is the only dps in the game with a flawless trace tree (which on top of all she has already is kinda cringe and corney and i say that when i love raiden mei). All her traces are offensive trace nodes, so there is no wasted potential there. Apply that shit to everyone that isn't niche like clara and Blade and that would make a difference with most of em. All the changes i mentioned are simple to implement for the most part and change literally nothing in terms of meta but they'd make a differece in the usability of said units that have difficulty keeping up.
    And to those who say hoyoverse could never, they already did. In honkai impact. Also, other games already have systems to bring back older units to relevancy once more, and never have they ever received negative feedback for it. It benefits everyone invloved.

    I’m a combination of 3 things:
    1. At minimum, a fomo dolphin (fear of missing out), example being e0s1’ing everyone.
    2. Straight up whale, ive spent $20,000 NZD on gachas give or take, 3k of that is on HSR.
    3. Semi-meta slave, if its strong/tier 1, ill get it. But here’s the semi part of it, i still have likes/preferences and that’ll deter me from not wanting it. example being i dont care for kafka, black swan, seele and dhil, so i wont whale them.
    - Blade is cool and all but since he’s old and how gacha games work, makes him less tempting. Which is funny coz the meta slave in me is canceling out the like/preference side of me. It goes back and forth.
    - Topaz, again, is cool and all but is old, easily powercreepable.
    - Silver wolf, a character i cant make up my mind about, good on acheron teams or mono quantum, but since i have e6s1 acheron i dont rly need her + she’s old.
    - argenti, here’s where the like/preference cancels out the meta slave in me, ill probably get him.

    There's definitely more nuance in this topic supports are more valuable cause they take up more slots in your team than DPS and since you only really need 2 and the top DPS ignore a lot of the elemental requirements because they are so strong other/older units fall off in value especially for new players who really need that big boost in damage to clear things early on. You can still clear pretty much all content with any of the limited units so far if you want to put in the work for your fav (LC or cons can help to) but some characters definitely struggle and die hard simps want their fav to be SSS Tier even if they're not for some reason. Jingliu with Pela running Tutorial LC, Ruan Mei, Fu Xuan can still clear content insanely well but this is from a day 1 perspective I can't really comment on the new player xp. You don't need to be pulling the new META DPS every time the few extra jades from MOC aren't worth and you're only going to disappoint yourself when they get powercrept and aren't as brainlessly OP anymore.

      Currently, they add new dinosaur that mitigate damage taken if the shield isn't broken. So it's actually a bit hard for Jingliu to clear it since it doesn't have ice weakness. We might see something similar in more enemies in the future. There might be condition where you might want more DPS option and sometimes, 4* DPS can help.

    Just pull for and use characters you like with the understanding that it is impossible for them to remain top tier forever because otherwise there would be no reason to pull new characters.

      Mono Quantum is the 7th best in the game If I'm not mistaking, so Seele will live on until we get a quantum destruction unit.
      Until that day comes you and the HSR devs should hug it out.

      'Wait until new Destruction unit comes' without us even knowing what kind of gimmicks that unit will do.
      Seele 0-cycled MoC since version 1.0 including 1.6 million HP Sam and now 2 million HP Aventurine. Many are done with just 4 stars with a sustin unit, others with just 3 men team to 0-cycle. Heck, she even 0-cycles Pure Fiction when Erudition units can't. Probably the reason why HoYo decided to increase enemies' HP in Pure Fiction so she doesn't trash Eruditions.
      And unlike E0 Acheron and Jingliu, Seele works well with almost all support units and she can even extend 1-turn buffs to do 5 actions. So as supports get better, it'll probably benefit her as well.
      I am not saying Seele will never get power crept as I've seen this happen in Genshin where Fontaine units do better damage than Liyue characters. But we never really felt the extent of power crept till Fontaine which is more than 3 years later. You can make an argument for Venti but when the content works for him, he is the best at that niche. Even Hutao still has a niche of high single-target damage.
      I'm just saying labeling units as 'power crept' just for the sake of using it without considering nuances to their kit and synergies are too narrow of a take.
      HoYo also has many ways of buffing older units by releasing new units. We saw that happen with Xiao in the form of Xianyun buffing his plunge damage. Now his team is very competitive. There's also Baizhu and Furina for Cyno Quickbloom.

    Still think characters that have the less value to be pulled for are Sustain in this game considering 4*/ no sustain is enough if you invest enough in the other side A.k.A Dps (which is by op support or dps), basically Pulling for damage enable you to not pull for sustain, where i find than pulling for sustain don't allow you as much to not invest in dps

      I think it is more like if you pulled premium sustain they can pretty much last you the entire time span of you still playing the game, you pretty much only need 2. Allowing you to pull and build more dps in the future, rather than sitting in anxiety trying to survive with 4 star sustains throughout your journey. Therefore higher pull value than dps.
      Pulling for DPS are more like dopamine rush that wears off after a period of time, while pulling for sustain is long term comfort and convenience.

      @@yankeng2896 that's the point, i don't care about comfort, or at least it's very low value, the fact than it's easily doable to ignore 5* sustain and therefore save jade show than they value is very low because i obviously take it on a viewpoint of a F2P, So jade is extremely important and you wanna save as much as possible ; Doing MoC with 4* dps is way harder and usually ask for eids than are random, doing MoC with only 4* support is also very hard, doing MoC with only 4* sustain is also very hard, the problem is, than when you're upgrading Dps, it alleviate your sustain need, but when you upgrade your sustain, doesn't change your dps (or very tiny upgrade) therefore it's very easy to see than Dps upgrade is worth more jade than Sustain one.

      @@phantr2530 Higher dps also means comfort, but DPS falls off way faster than sustain does. Im not saying to not pull for a single dps, of course we need them, but we dont need a bunch of them coming nonstop (at least before having strong sustainability). Once you have at least 2-3 DPS, sustain will have higher pulling value since they lasts you way way longer than DPS does. And you dont need a lot of sustain, just 2, and the rest can go into DPS/support pull.
      Im purely speaking from META perspective, and all about pulling value. I myself loves pulling new DPS too, and I like strong sustainability so all my DPS coming can perform at their peak performance. But to each their own. Enjoyment is still the most important element.

      @@yankeng2896 I'm not sure if you understand, First ; when i say upgrading Dps, i don't strictly talk about pulling for Damage dealer character, i mean about pulling for every char that are made to increase your Dps, so also Support.
      Second ; i don't care than your Sustain character will "last longer", you literally don't need any sustain if you push your Dps enough, or at least it reduce the amount of sustain needed. 5* limited sustain char is overkill in sustain.
      Third ; Dps "falling off" is just in a meta viewpoint, they fall off from op meta damage dealer, but you don't need that to clear fast if you invest enough in upgrading your dps of your teams via Support and damage dealer. you don't need to have acheron to kill mobs fast enough, gear your yanqing good enough, pull for sparkle, use tingyun, and you're good with just gepard perfectly sustaining you well instead of the useless aventurine that would have done minor dps increase for 80 pull and that would have accomplish the same thing than gepard A k A sustaining.
      Fourth ; Sustain don't have more Value after you have, i quote ; " 2-3 Dps ." because after you have your strong dps you don't need those sustain anymore, it's the oposite, if you find your 2-3 damage dealer not enough just pull for more dps increase to alleviate the need of sustain. but you shouldn't have to do that anyway, as i said before ; it's not because your damage dealers are not meta anymore than they are bad and will kill mobs too slowly, you just need to do things well.

    Agree this is a Gacha game after all if you get the character your want. You basically won that Patch. The Hard part is when people start to compare then Frustration comes in.

    I still hope some character I get a comeback by indirect buff, but HSR is really fast to "kill" non-support characters. The only thing that might saves each character is player's attachment, but this varies from account to account, it's a very individual view.

    Even though I never see myself playing or being too interested in any MiHoYo game ever again, such as Star Rail, Solo's videos are still satisfying to watch somehow.

    The key to DPS units is to find where they are unique, and where they either bend or break rules of the game. Acheron will eventually be overtaken as a DPS unit, however her ultimate is colorless damage that can break anyone which is why she is worth building.
    I do agree with Jingliu falling, as her kit is just anti-synergistic with a lot of teams. I'll stick with her in my secondary team though until the next huge meta dps unit appears.

    DPS is always better than buff character because DPS have play styles while buff is just getting bigger, having more resources. DPS is fun

    5* dps will always be better than 4*. The most significant account boost is after you pull for 5* dps. Then yes, supports start to matter much more.
    And I disagree about Jingliu. Yeah, she has her weaknesses but what you really want from a dps is to deal maximum damage in most buffed state. It doesn't matter Jingliu does nothing for 2 turns if then she can deal more damage in 2-3 actions than any other dps could in 5 (except Acheron). We can see Acheron powercreeps even Jingliu and therefore Acheron will be powercrept one day but she will be top tier for at least 1 year (I personally bet on 2 years just because Acheron has almost no weaknesses). And even then E2S1 Acheron will probably be better than new meta E0S1 dps.

      Acheron will be powercrept in couple of months as well lol, you glazers are insane.
      There's gonna be another char that does 100 milion damage on average and the glaze will begin again.
      There hasn't been a single DPS worth pulling on the rerun, if Acheron will still be relevant once her rerun comes around you would be right, but i bet she absolutely won't.

      @@etam8099 I mean Acheron powercrept Jingliu but she is still a top tier dps. If you don't like Acheron then you can pull for Jingliu, why not.
      And for me what makes Acheron more future-proof than Jingliu is her E2. Next strongest dps should be viable in both ST and AoE scenarios and should outperform E2S1 Acheron with just their E0S1. Also E0S1 Acheron should start struggle in fights (and that's the most crazy thought you can have).

      I don’t think Acheron will fall off that quick, they made over 200 mil with this character, as a company they understand the business strategy to at least keep a few popular characters that stay relevant for a year or two, if every new dps power creeps, and we end up having 10 dps in S+ tier I think and hope most adults will understand to not spend on this game (at least not chase meta) therefore damaging the company’s profit. Mihoyo understands that, and in most gacha games, you do have characters that stay at the top for years
