Diving into the seedy underbelly of the moviemaking is fascinating, heartbreaking, angering but also fascinating. And your enthusiasm is just like mine!
I recommend "Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker's Apocalypse" which is a documentary about the making of "Apocalypse Now".
Also, the death of Sal Mineo (an Oscar nominated actor ("Rebel Without a Cause", "Giant"). The death of his co-star Natalie Wood (from "Rebel") which remains a mystery to this day (Christopher Walken was on the boat!).
The curse of "The Poltergeist" movie.

Shree, the other movie tragedy in my recent memory was "The Crow".Actor Brandon Lee son of Actor and Martial Arts legend Bruce Lee.Brandon lost his life with a real bullet which people on the set thought the gun had blanks. You would think after tragedy of The Crow, that the directors, producers, prop crew of the movie "RUST"would make extremely sure that the gun did not contain real ammunition.😢

Shree, it's interesting that you would post this because I had been thinking about Vic Morrow last night. As I told you in another post, I'm a 64 year old black man who loves films. Vic Morrow was my ultimate hero growing up because of watching him in the Combat series. He and Bruce Lee were my absolute favorite people on earth!! When I learned of Morrow's tragic and unnecessary death, I was devastated and later outraged! I'm tearful as I write this, but thank you so much for this expose even though I'm very familiar with the content. I still miss Vic and Bruce!!❤❤❤😊😊😊

Looking forward to watching your video on this Shree. You always do such well researched content.
Yes, the event was so tragic (I remember the aftermath very well because it was all over the news for a long time) that it has affected director John Landis, who was director of the opening/closing & segment 1 (which was the segment of when the accident occurred), along with the other segment 3 & 4 directors, Joe Dante & George Miller, executive producer & segment 2 director Steven Spielberg, the other actors and crew who worked in the film, Jennifer Jason Leigh (daughter of Vic Morrow), the parents & family of the children, other cast & crew members who were on the set when the accident happened, as well as the studio head executives at Warner Bros for years (and for many, it still affects them to this day). Various saftey standards and safety procedures within the movie industry were changed & improved upon because of the tragedy and subsequent court cases (probably one of the few good things to come out of it all)....Still the anthology film itself (although overshadowed by the accident) did honor the classic 50s tv series and it's creator Rod Sterling. As well as it did achive a small profit at the box office and on home video (although ironically not one of the five segments - 3 remakes of classic Twilight Zone episodes & 2 original segments made for the film, were at all written by creator Rod Sterling himself) plus it was popular enough that did later spawn a 80s revival/reboot of the tv series which lasted for 3 seasons (1985-1989) on CBS, which I personally did enjoy watching on TV every week back in the day (which goes to show ya how old I am, lol).

@@ShreeNation I've worked on sets/locations before. Yes time is money, but every shoot I was on safety was a priority. But the people we worked with were professionals, everyone knew their job, and everything went (mostly) smoothly. Corners were never cut. Granted we used the same people generally, so the crews were small and people worked together for years.
What were they thinking? It was bad enough the chances they took...but hiring minors illegally? Not informing the guardians about the danger?
That Vic Morrow died trying to save the children was even more heartbreaking. That the filmmakers tried to blame him for being killed was infuriating.

This is an excellent documentary on a needlessly tragic event. I remember seeing this in the theater when I was 21. I had heard briefly of the tragedy on the news but this was way before RUclips and social media and I knew very little about what happened or what the original plot was supposed to be. I do remember thinking on my first viewing that first segment was cliched, repetitive and ultimately bad as it was in the movie... it seemed like the Twilight Zone was unnecessarily cruel to this character, and especially disturbing considering the fate of the actor. I actually kind of loved the rest of the film, though...but my big takeaway was -and still is - Jerry Goldsmith's haunting, evocative score which I still occasionally listen to. Thank you for your great research and work on this. As far as other subjects go...I would love to see a tribute to the matte artists of classic Hollywood who gave us painted images of fantastic scenes including the Emerald City in The Wizard of Oz...it is something I considered pursuing when I was young.

Thanks Shree for another great mini-documentary. It makes me angry how absolutely unconcerned with safety Landis seemed during the entire filming process. But it's almost worse how many other directors came to his defense and said he'd done nothing wrong. I get it, most of them probably knew him personally, and maybe they were thinking about how they'd done similarly shady things in their own work that never became public because nobody died. But you can't even manage something like "He let his quest for art overcome his common sense", or something like that that at least shows you understand he did something wrong? Anyway, hope you're doing well Shree, and I'm looking forward to your next video.

I grew up a big fan of John Landis's movies. An American Werewolf in London, Trading Places, Spies Like Us and Coming to America were the highlights for me. I was an adult before I became aware of this incident and, ever since then, rewatching any of these films carries a pang of guilt, because I can never entirely avoid the association with a man who not only did this but, inexplicably, got away with it.
Whenever I rewatch Twilight Zone: The Movie, to this day, I will invariably skip the John Landis segment - I see no reason to taint the work of Spielberg, Dante and Miller by having it preceded by that episode. Part of me thinks, 'How in the hell was the episode that killed Vic Morrow even left in?' Out of respect they shouldn't have even included it. Just like I will never watch Alec Baldwin's Rust, I will never watch that episode again.

    • @ShreeNation

Agreed, they should've never kept that segment in. If it were up to me, they should retry the case and send John Landis to prison.

The truth is that the John Landis segment should have been entirely removed from the film. I found it very disrespectful that they included it after such a tragedy, and even more so if we see the fate of his character in the edited segment that was left in the final cut. They should have filmed a new segment, although it could have been expensive.
In any case, the movie is a mess. Spielberg's part is boring, Joe Dante's part more or less rescues the spirit of the original Twilight Zone episode, but the cartoonish style and bad special effects ruins it, and the only worthwhile segment is the one filmed by George Miller. Because of this and the unfortunate accident, the film failed miserably at the box office.

"Let's learn something together" - love it! / Outstanding encapsulation of The Twilight Zone.....something I've never been able to do. And you've never even seen the actual show! 😂 / You are right, no piece of art is worth it. And this wasn't even a piece of art, it was a piece of crap! You saw the segment, right? Like.....this WASN'T "Apocalypse Now"! Again, it would be inexcusable on any film set, but Vic Morrow must have been thinking that night, "Jeez, this gig sucks." People take actors for granted, they put themselves in danger all the time, and obviously stunt men too. Since the earliest days of movies, actors, crew people and stunt people have died or gotten seriously hurt. You always hear about actors breaking ribs, or getting a broken nose, or hurting their knee or ankle, doing a routine fall. And they go through it because they want to make it look good. For us! It doesn't matter if it's a great movie or a crappy one! They have to give 100%! This is why so many early movie stars, like Judy Garland or Mabel Normand got addicted to pills. The studios would give 'em to you in case you got hurt, so you could work through the pain. Or simply to keep you awake, working through long hours.
One thing obviously led to Landis' hubris: if you look at ALL his previous movies, they're filled with wild stunts. Have you seen The Blues Brothers? The most spectacular car crashes ever. He had done a "guerrilla-style" shoot for American Werewolf In London, where he positioned cameras from rooftops and in one take, filmed a big car crash sequence....without getting a single permit. So he obviously was feeling over-confident, because he'd directed so many jaw dropping, mind-blowing stunt scenes. He flew too close to the sun!
    GREAT VIDEO!!!!!!!!!!!! Congratulations!!!!!

I actually just came here to tell you that I'm watching an interview with one of the actors from "Veep", and he gets asked if it bothers him when stuff gets cut out that he wishes got kept in. And he said: "The only thing that sucks is when you're in a movie and they make you jump in, like, a cold lake.....and then you see the movie, and they don't even use it." And it just made me think of your video and this tragedy......and also every single scene where a character in a movie falls in the mud, or into the water, or gets spit on, or falls down and just all the stuff that happens to people in movies.
