The normal Osu is so garbage compared to the other modes it has in terms of difficulty and song maps people make. Osumania and even the Taiko one are a lot better. Can't comment on catch the beat since that's more of an arcade game with music than a rhythm game IMO.
I would have to say that pop'n music comes in second. You'd need to be a god tier player to be good at pop'n music. Not just anyone is going to be able to clear level 46-50 charts.

As for Scorpion Fire, I can see why it isn't on this, as most of the song isn't that hard; only the ending is really that notable.
Yep, though this game gives a solid F-U to those that try to 1 hand this game. In the Tatsujin movie mode on 6th style, Lisu, renouned 1 handed player at the time, has to resort to 2 hands at the buildup to the climax of V on another, and this was way back in 5TH STYLE (it's a straight 2-4 measure of a 1-3-5-7 2-4-6 drum roll)
Yea that variance judge timing on old 5key beatmanias were quite annoying more often than not. But it gave birth to a hilarious homage which is Gambol [a]
What sucks about #2 is that since one hand has to be occupied for the whole time on just the turntable action, the other hand has to do all of the work for the 7 keys. It is so hard to work all 7 keys with one hand. It could come easy for some, but definitely not me. You could try to transfer some of that weight over by working the edge 2 keys with your turntable hand, but then you'll just get confused.
There was always one mod that I wanted since the 5 key beatmania days...Auto Key mode, where you have to only scratch the turntable...though it still won't make the Beach Side bunny remix any easier

Today, there are many changes about 'Hardest' songs in IIDX. Bad maniacs, quell, Nageki no ki, Almagest are no longer in hardest. Instead, there are many candidates such as 'Elemental Creation', 'PENDULEMs', 'Confiserie' and so on.

If you play these games long enough and get used to their timing, you (have to) read the notes as they are falling halfway down the screen, not when they hit the red bar at the bottom. It is a lot of information to process after all.

In addition, It is important to think about 'Gauge type' (Easy, Normal, Hard, EX-Hard). it means, some gauge type make hardest songs much easier we though. For example, Mei becomes easier a lot in Easy, Normal gauge ( in Hard or EX-Hard, it becomes damn hard ).
no way, dude; mei is by far the hardest song. back when I last played (Gold) i could AAA/hard clear anything (AAAd golden cross, AA [the song not the grade], Quell and all the 12s on 6th-Gold except maybe piano concerto #1 and nageki no ki) but i never once cleared mei. it is nonstop fingerslaughter. it will probably never be equalled in future releases.
This movie is old, so it is different from now and some people succeeded these songs in this video full-combo. however, 冥 is still the most difficult song in ⅱdx.

It's kind of hard to gauge what songs are the MOST difficult. Players are skilled in a variety of different areas so there are alot of songs which could easily make this list depending on peoples opinions. Mei is probably the hardest to hard clear but in terms of clearing, it's easier than nageki. Alternatively Red, Balck or snakestick could be put here i people such at scratching. It's really impossible to nominate 10 absolute winners
The Almagest is a big book on math and astronomy. The Akashic Records are supposed to contain all knowledge, so one could say the Almagest is a part of the Akashic Records. I think. I dunno, it's bemani genres, just go with it.
Plan 8 > Shakunetsu > everything else on both Clear/HC /end FC difficulty =/= chart difficulty, usually Mei is way down the list when it's about Normal Clear (around G59/YAKSHA tier)
With its steep learning curve and loads of sophisticated features, I'd describe iidx as a prestige-class rhythm game compared to others.
