As a doctor I can tell you one thing, researchers in our field keep on sweating it out in the laboratories inventing new products but it requires someone who can actually communicate those products to the larger world...." The consumers... " You are playing the role of being the media for them.... And personally I feel grateful for that.... You guys make our work be "seen" ...Be "heard"... The product info leaflet inside the boxes may come across really geeky and boring to people... So someone needs to glamorize it up for them so that they actually know what is inside the product they are using.... The products have to find their own match.... U shud know what is meant for u to choose the right product.... If someone u look up to as a successful,glamorous and knowledgeable person does the homework for u and opines on the products,it becomes a much smarter choice for u.

I never comment, but it is so awesome to see a woman proudly taking credit for her hard work and accomplishments, with no apology. Go Susan!

Just because you don’t have a license/degree doesn’t mean you can’t educate yourself about an issue and share your knowledge with everyone! Never once have I questioned your qualifications 🤗 even if this was just a hobby of yours and you didn’t have the background you do, i would still be here. You’re passionate about sharing info about skincare,etc. and I’m here for it 🙌🏼

I agree with most of what you said but I think it’s a good thing and it’s important to question a person’s credentials. lol not in a rude way, but the root of that idea checking your sources to make sure the information you’re getting is legitimate.

Definitely! I passed my CIDESCO beauty therapy exams this year and I honestly feel other than health & safely and anatomy & physiology- the information given is so out of date for these courses. (Or perhaps it was just the college I was in but either way the exam is the same throughout the world for cidesco.)

I hate when people challenge your qualifications just because you’re not a doctor or an esthetician. You’ve collected so much information to share with SO MUCH PEOPLE.
RJ Fernandez I feel people listen to this young kids without much experience or knowledge yet, they question someone who you can tell she is educated in the topic.
I hate when people boast some pseudo-qualifications, to substantiate their claim as a “professional.” It’s fine to be a skincare enthusiast and wanting to share, but treating your reactions videos as if you’re a dermatologist giving advice, is kinda slanderous. I don’t hold a grudge or hate Susan, but I wished people didn’t glorify her “qualifications,” as she has no background in healthcare.

You are an expert, a journalist, an influencer of the highest quality, and I have learned so much about my own skin from watching these videos. I in turn have shared that information with my daughter, my sisters, and my friends who gifted their own daughters skincare for Christmas....truth. Thank you for all you do in keeping us well informed. Last week I was in Sephora talking to a clerk about a moisturizer when a complete stranger said “you have the most beautiful skin”. Sarah Hdgsklansjd I saw the comments in her review of the one Dermatologist (whose name I cannot remember) skincare video but the comments were just plain rude. I support people having their own opinions but I am one of those rare people who say be respectful about it. Those comments were the complete opposite of that. And like you said most were from women...
The point she makes about studies is so true. You have to look at how many people were in it, who funded it, what were the conditions, how long it was, is it applicable to more than one race or gender, SO MANY THINGS. We're learning this in a critical thinking class of mine now.

I'll be honest, I had never even watched a skincare video until one day in the deep, deep abyss of a youtube binge I stumbled across one of your videos. Admittedly it was the title that sucked me in and thank god it did! I perform in drag up to 4 times per week and you, Susan Yara ("who is this Susan Yara? LOL) have single-handedly changed my skin. I'm most likely still doing it wrong by your standards but now I'm using products that actually remove all the make up - well I no longer have to change my pillow every night after performing so I assume it is. Even after a long, late-night I take the time to enjoy the process. PS. Your HB Go To Bed was THE BEST! All hail the Queen - Queen Susan that is!
As a Journalism major myself, I can't help but to feel so darn proud when you said that you are a Journalist!
“She’s just a journalist”. All you have to do is watch the news and the media to see how incompetent and poor some of these more “high profile” journalists are. So to find a journalist that actually does a good and thorough job is actually a rare find! Give her the respect and accolades she deserves. This “journalist”, does better research and gives more informed advice than some dermatologists. I’m just surprised people try to belittle what you do. Keep being great girl 👌🏾💁🏾♀️
No one is belittling her but dermatologists do more research and are more dedicated to their field than her. They have a lot at stake and really have to work hard. I get that some of them are douchebags trying to siphon money from their patients and then again race and class plays into it. But I am training to be one and it is truly a field that demands dedication. Most of the doctors I know work hard to serve their patients. They are not trying to harm or spread misinformation.
Someone who carries themselves like Susan Yara does should not be even questioned about her qualifications. She is passionate in the issue and it shows! I love how she suggests all kinds of beauty products to try which made me like Esthetics again. She sparks my interest again and again. Thank you beautiful smart Susan Yara!

I personally don't think you need to qualify yourself, frankly whose to say what makes someone an expert? I'd trust RUclips before my doctor most days. I've learned a lot from you Susan and you're really humble to answer this question
I find it amazing that so many people won’t think of questioning a political journalists qualifications or a sports journalist qualifications but the second anything makes us look inward, we freak. It’s so silly. In this day and age I believe it’s ignorant not to take in as much information as you can from as many different specialist and experts as we can. Everyone has a unique perspective and it’s through learning about all of these that we develop our own.
I have immense respect for you Susan and am grateful you help educate us in a way that is comfortable and insightful rather than just data driven and dry.
You really give a really really good perspective in skincare susan. Not just purely from the dermatologist point of view, but also the commercial and user point of view as well which is much needed. Skincare is really is personal and you give a great perspective in that, that a person can get as ton of information as they get but in the end of the day its about what decide is best of their skin. So glad i stumble upon your channel before. You teach me there are things that can be tolerate and not all things are cookie cutter in skincare.

I love hearing about your history, really fascinating how your path has led you to creating mixed makeup. It makes me want to work for you as an intern, I need to absorb your knowledge lol! I only knew a tiny bit about Mixed Makeup being behind the scenes for other brands, but the fact that your team works to understand and then help market them and their products is really cool!
I’m a pre-med student and I can tell you that scientist don’t know how to write research papers for the general public. We literally take classes on how to write scientific research papers differently than how you would write a regular research paper. We Need journalists to take our words/findings and translate them and disperse the findings.
Or for scientists to learn to communicate their findings with the public! Science communication is so important 😊
I wouldn't say that scientists "don't know" how to write a research paper for the general public. It's more that these research papers are not targeted towards the general public but the scientific community. But I defs agree that Science Communication should serve as the field that bridges the gap between science and the general public
I think that science is a language that needs to be interpreted. And journalist have the job of learning the basics of the language and interpreting it to us ignorant ones because we don’t take the time to do it ourselves or because we don’t have the access.

@@mindykoch3340 I think it's quite rude to say "dumbing it down". The general public is not dumb, they simply do not have a scientific background and therefore, can be easily misinformed. Your comment pretty much says "you're an idiot and uneducated
, get up to my level". And no wonder there is such a gap. They may choose to learn some scientific jargon, but let's be real, people aren't going to do that for many reasons. As I said in my previous comment, science communication, as a growing field, is great to simply science in a way that is catered to the general public.
Susan, you are THE best person to be bringing information to our community. A journalist by definition is the conduit, the carrier, of the information. You are a specialist in communication and much more, these people that don't see the amazing value you bring to the table are so shortsighted that would not absorb all the information you bring anyway. I believe that even dermatologists and other "specialists" watch and should watch your content because of how vast is the source of information that you share. Please continue the amazing work you do and we the people that are interested in getting quality information and need a little help keeping up with the fast-moving world of skincare and the science behind it, like me, will forever follow and be immensely grateful. Susan your channel is amazing. I think what constitutes expertise extends beyond education and formal training. It’s countless hours in the field, time, effort, research, staying apprised of the industry. You are all that and more. I have changed so many of my beauty habits courtesy of your channel. Furthermore- Derms and estheticians can only learn so much about actual beauty products, I was actually at my Derm yesterday showing him PDO threads on Instagram because I was asking him if it is a service he provides.
I think every expert/industry has their place, their something that adds to our education as laypersons or skincare enthusiasts.

i suggest you check out James Welsh channel. He also does skincare.
As a guy, i too had a problem not understanding skincare and also thought that men and women have different kind of skincare. so i tried to watch James Welsh because i can relate to him and gradually accepted that skincare is the same regardless gender, only differentiated by your skin types.

She’s an absolutely beautiful, articulate, boss. Killing it in her field and tbh doesn’t need to justify a thing to anyone. Way more than “just” a journalist but if that’s all she is to anyone, we need more passionate people in that field. Merely my humble opinion.
Susan I admire you so much. You truly are a beauty expert. A person doesn't need to be a dermatologist or aesthetician to be considered a skincare or beauty expert. Just like you don't need to be an athlete to be called a sports expert or a film director to be a film expert. And by the way, skincare expert is different from a skin expert. Susan is very knowledgeable about skincare products, routines and treatments. But Susan never claimed or presented herself to be a skin expert. That is why she invites different dermatologists with her on some of her videos that require further examination and education about skin conditions.
You should give yourself even MORE credit Susan.

This is in response to all the hate she got from the Dr. Pimple Popper reaction video. She rubbed people the wrong way when she said she might know more about skincare than the doctor. I'm sure Susan didn't mean it that way. But it did come out a lil' cocky not gonna lie.
However, like anything I watch I take it with a grain of salt. Susan was actually one of the first videos I watched when I was trying to learn more about skincare and she has given some really good information especially to a beginner like me.

In my opinion you are more qualified to give skincare advice than a hell of a lot of people, and I trust your opinions over so many others. For years I’ve followed dermatologists, doctors, facialists etc on Instagram and it’s made zero difference to my skin. Last year I started watching you and a blogger called Emma Horaeu who also is not a dermatologist, yet the two of you have given me the best skincare advice and products recommendations that has changed my skin. You are an expert in your field, you are knowledgeable, you actually try products for a living and that’s what I want and that’s the person who I am listening to. Your videos are so incredibly informative and you make skincare accessible for people like me who want to educate themselves.

As a cosmetic/skincare chemist, admittedly I questioned your background because it’s important to me to be mindful of who I receive information from. Overtime, from watching your videos I will say that you are well versed in what you do and also admit to areas that you are not the strongest in which I appreciate on a personal level. It’s not about what your background is in, as long as you’re doing that research to know the in’s and out’s of what you’re talking about, and not putting out misleading information, you are a credible source. This is so true. If you take Graham Stephen as an example: he doesn't have a degree in finance or economics and people listen to his advice all the time because he's a self-made millionaire and the proof is in the pudding. But Susan has flawless skin, looks 10 years younger than she is, is incredibly educated and connected in the field, runs a literal business dealing with the information and yet...??? I really appreciate you! I remember an ex saying to me “well you’re just a babysitter” and I was so offended. I was great with kids, a baby whisperer so to speak. Experience, wisdom, yes!!! I love this ❤️ I’m in the communications/public relations/marketing space and there’s a real skill to gathering information, distilling it, and presenting it in a way that appeals to consumers. I don’t think a lot of people realize how much skill that takes. True experts in their fields (doctors, researchers, etc.) typically can NOT do this because they’re so in the weeds of their own speciality.
Thanks for letting us know! It’s important for everyone to look into the legitimacy of their sources. It’s one thing to read and learn about something but when you have to write about, it takes so much more understanding on the topic and it sticks in your brain better after you do.

Which btw one of them asked me, why you’re sharing this with me? She’s not qualified. And I replied with, yes she is, because she is talking about her experiences, her beliefs, but behind her there’s aesthetician, dermatologist, formulators, also she been in the beauty industry for a while and my friends was, oh ok, that makes sense, I’ll watch it then. Susan Yara is the opposite of humble. Hyram calls himself a Skincare Specialist because that's literally the title of his job, as he says in all him videos. And he's responsible enough to put a disclaimer in EVERY video so people don't mistake him for something he's not. Ahem.

Very interesting to hear about your background. We should all be skeptical about what we see on youtube and one way we can have confidence in what we hear to is to know the background of the youtuber. I appreciate you telling us this, but you can't assume that everyone who watches your channel will watch this video. If you really want to maintain high standards, I would encourage you to put this information into your regular bio or at the beginning of your videos. Then it is up the watcher / consumer to judge whether they trust what they are hearing.
