    Have you considered switching the position of the posts, such that the short sides have the post in the corner, and the long sides have the post inset by 2"? Then you'd be screwing through the long-side posts into the short-side posts, giving yourself way more room...

    Brilliant! Great editing too. I was wondering about drainage for the plants. If the inserts have holes the water will drip down into the storage area. If no holes the planters could fill up with water.

      An aluminum tray with a drainage hose installed beneath the planters may solve that issue...Good observation...

    • @DIYMontreal
      @DIYMontreal  2 года назад +7

      Yes indeed exterior flower boxes should have the drainage holes drilled out (which I will do). Therefore the stuff underneath will likely get wet (even without considering drainage, rain will get through the slats). So that's why I'll only put stuff underneath that can get wet like you see in the video.
      Nevertheless, I will consider adding a drainage hose to the bottom of the flower boxes to orient most of the water out the back to keep things clean down there. We'll see!

    Really quick too build and simple. If you built the long sides like the short sizes and vice versa, maybe there would be more space to put the while puzzle together?

    • @DIYMontreal
      @DIYMontreal  2 года назад

      Yes indeed but the storage door would not work that way. EDIT: After some thought I think you're right. Might be a little tight to get the door in though, but could use bigger spacers (cedar legs) on the edge when assembling the large panels and thin (slat) spacers when assembling the short panels.

    Again, a wonderfully created video. Simple is always good. Design is great and perfect for a planter garden for limited space or for a small backyard. Looks like the gophers will have a tough time nibbling at those roots. Storage is perfect without creating a larger footprint. Personally we have avoided uses pressure treated lumber when growing vegetable and eatable flowers. But the use of prefabricated growing containers will eliminate soil contact with the pressure treated wood. In addition, our state, CA, and local codes make it difficult and illegal to dispose of pressure treated lumber in the general garbage/composting containers. Another fantastic job Marie.

    Great video and gloriously simple but attractive design. Lots of comments here about the secret compartment store, and I think it could be modified to take logs being stored to 'season' by fitting a weatherproof membrane beneath the planter base and down the back, (all on the inside of course.) This provides enough weather protection and maintains air flow to dry out logs. Great for a fire pit or a chimenea or even solid fuel stoves. The door could even be removed completely to reveal the stored logs as a feature! Ever thought about fitting small wheels/castors? Im in the UK and will be using 22mm x 100mm Pressure Treated boards for my build but still following your design overall. Thanks

    This one is definitely a banger! I love "secret compartments" and try to incorporate them in my big build/furniture projects lol. Usually a plus with customers.
    For the magnets, you can always use some sort of metal/steel for the other end to attract the magnet. That way you don't worry about polarities or even misalignment of the magnets. PLUS, you "double up" how many magnets you can now use. Just a thought 😊. Thanks for sharing!

    Great video and build. Thanks for sharing the video. I really like that planter box. The hidden storage area is ingenious. Is it necessary to use rare earth magnets as a pair?
    I mean, one in the frame and one on the "door" on each side? If you can put a metal washer instead of a rare earth magnet, you don't need to glue them.
    It's possible that you'll need four "connections" in this case, so you won't save money on rare magnets. But sometimes wonders happen and two are enough if you have one
    "connection" at the left side up, and the second at the right side down.

    • @DIYMontreal
      @DIYMontreal  2 года назад

      Indeed others have commented on this. Probably didn't need 4 magnets. Magnets on the door and metal on the adjoining face would have done the trick.

  • @davidbarker5514

    Instead of connecting two magnets, you can use a magnet and a large washer or a piece of metal. Then you can just use screws and not worry about polarity or glue.

      Please refer to my response to GH:
      Yes indeed exterior flower boxes should have the drainage holes drilled out (which I will do). Therefore the stuff underneath will likely get wet (even without considering drainage, rain will get through the slats). So that's why I'll only put stuff underneath that can get wet like you see in the video.
