Migrating birds care more about the ease of their trip than the distance they travel, and that leads to some truly roundabout routes.

Laughed my smoothie through my nose when I saw the Monty Python reference. While dealing with this, I heard Air Speed Velocity and laughed again. Keyboards are really hard to clean.
Kinvert
It was an European swallow who was trying to get to his coconut. That's it. My life is complete!
Love the Monty Python reference :D
It was low-hanging fruit, but I'm glad it was picked.
The 5 ounce bird carrying a 1 pound coconut debate shall never die!! ;-)
Came to make this comment - glad to see it already hear
stay classy
a shame that so much is picked from such a small swath of their humor

Would you rather see the naughty bits of a mosquito, or Margaret Thatcher??
as a soaring pilot I look out for bird flocks because they do indicate thermals. but not all are viable, because bird-wings are different to gliders.
To be honest I think that when birds migrate...
They just WING it.
Nice
MinuteEarth Niccceee
OOOOOOOH! That’s a pun to squawk about!
And Just when I thought comedy *BEAKED*
0:30 "But is it an European or African swallow tho?"
- "Uh, I don't know"
*Gets flung into the gorge of death
You make one of best science videos on RUclips. Always when I think that "I know this" or "Meh, seen that already" just in a minute or so you surprise me. Your cartoon style animations and well written scripts are great to convey bits of useful information to 40ish years old armchair science fans and 7 year old "But why..." philosophers. Keep up the good work!
The people at minute earth are pokémon fans CONFIRMED!
(Editor sneaks in a chatot at 0:04)
Jasper Van Acker I'm pretty sure the illustrator is a big pokemon fan, they slip in Pokemon all the time. I enjoy looking out for them
Jasper Van Acker not to mention the Monty python reference...

MinuteEarth I love u
It's not available everywhere yet, including on iOs devices. :)
MinuteEarth I can't see it
Did you take into consideration whether the European swallow was laden or unladen when you calculated the difference that wind speeds make to it's journey?
But what is the airspeed velocity of an unladen swallow?
ワイズマン African or European?
I don't know that
ワイズマン rip in peace
Are you suggesting that coconuts migrate?
no it might have been carried by swallows
Luke Koziol African swallow, has greater carrying capacity but I think it might have been wto swallows
Luke Koziol The African swallow is non-migratory!!!
I got arrested for watching videos of sick birds.
How was i meant to know about ill-eagle streaming?
is it a bald eagle in the US?
Go home you're drunk.
**facepalm**
This is great
Go drunk man, you’re home.
I plan airline flights and we do the same things in airplanes. Sometimes a straight line or an arc makes the most sense but when the winds vary (and especially on longer flights) we may plan a route heading east southeast then turn east, southeast, then northeast again . It may be to pick up a tailwind or avoid a headwind of the jet stream, go perpendicular to them, or even go with the flow of a high or low pressure system. We can be far more efficient today than in years past as our forecast models and information become more accurate!
One of the places where a lot of birds come together in in Hula Valley (due to both being in a place between continents and on the Syrian African rift), where at some points there are a billion birds in that little area.
Love your videos. Keep up with the hard work. Your one of my favorite RUclips channels and nothing can be done to reverse it.
Loving the vids! Keep it up
So, what is the air speed of an unladen european swallow?
Love your channel keep up the good work 😃
Then there's the exceptions: I admire the kuaka, or bar-tailed godwit. It migrates from Alaska to New Zealand in one flight, non-stop across the entire Pacific Ocean. It stops off in China on the way back. It's not a very big bird either, but several times bigger than a swallow. We love having them arrive to herald spring for us. They are absolutely the best fliers I have seen. We get fantastic gales around the equinoxes, as many places do. When all the other shore birds are grounded due to the strength of the wind, you will still see the godwits flying directly into the gale at times, making good speed with what seems like very little effort. They spend the southern summer here getting fat, then return to Alaska to breed in the northern summer.
Don't worry, I get the limitations and aim of your channel concept. This isn't a criticism, just an FYI.
Being a bird looks so fun. Two big trips a year!
It makes sense that small birds would travel on land its way safer for them Just found out! Thx minuteearth!
Good vid as always!!!
Animorphs taught me about thermals! This video might actually get me back to reading all of them again haha.
Great information and pace
Being a bit pedantic here, but anyway: At 0:34 what they double is their ground velocity, while their airspeed remains the same.
More about this would be nice to see.
Thanks for another great video, biology themed this time.
Keep up the good work, and please go on making vids.about biology topics.
your quality is so good
Good job! Keep it up!
Loved this vid 💜
I want to see a mass migration of bird Pokemon
@Malachi Grima, the Fell Dragon / the Creation
*Flying type Pokemon
I can see the movie being "gale wings the birdemic" OU will never survive
You have inspired me to go on a Pokemon binge. Thanks!

missingno probably heard you
Chatot a bird Pokemon in this video find him
land bridges? DARNIT THEY'RE CALLED ISTHMUSES
Is that the start of your new book, "An Isthmus Carol"?
You deserve wayyyy more subs
i heard something about people who fly gliders and in the right condition usually around a mountain could fly all day using heat rise to gain altitude to a point where they have to dive so they still have enough oxygen to breath easy.
Me:*cheking my notifications*OOOOOH minute earth put out a new video!!!! Yay!!! Your amazing, awesome and (almost) Perfect!
Your my favorite you tubers because you give me more facts of the world then the school
How do the birds find those thermals? Is it done by feel? Is it by seeing it? Now this makes me more curious.
Informative and sincerely funny animation.
I love watching birds migrating. ♥️
I felt so happy when the black circle was drawn around Costa Rica, even though the name is not mentioned in the video.
Pablo Castro Montero me too
Pablo Castro Montero why
FluffyKittinz because that's we're I am from. It's such a tiny little country that it rarely gets any attention (at least in the channels I follow).
You mean black circle. You had me searching the video trying to find a second time that Costa Rica was circled, heh.
You're totally right. My apologies. Fixed the original comment. Thanks for pointing that out.
Chatot! with Pokeball headphones! I just love the hidden pokemon in these videos~
Incredible that birds basically fly from one end of the earth to the other... twice... every year! Do all birds do this? How long does it take them on average to make this migration? How much distance can they cover in a day?
lol just realized there are three people named Reich in your production team. Three Reichs... hmmm... Coincidence? or reptiloid Iluminati aliens confirmed?
I loved the Chatot detail 😂
Thank you so much for the numerous Holy Grail references!
How does dynamic soaring work for the wandering albatross
What is the airspeed velocity of an unladen swallow anyway?

So what is the air speed velocity of an unladen swallow?
0:32 Is that a... Monty Python reference??
There's a swallow carrying a coconut at the end (1:25) you can even see Arthur on the left
0:35
Nice monty reference
"if it doubles it's airspeed..." you meant "groundspeed" right?
I love your video make a video about the appendix
Hi Emily
Ur videos all are good. I would like to give some information same like you to our people in my language.
I need your support. I just want to know what software u r using to create video like this. Or which software you will be advice.
Thank you
0:05 Not another wild Chatot encounter, not again
Do thermals form because of uneven heating of the ground or just heating of the ground?
Go with the flow
Nice little monty python reference at 0:31
What, is the airspeed velocity of an unlaiden swallow?
Was the swallow African, or European?
Eurafrican?
African swallows, like coconuts, don't migrate
An African swallow might migrate if it was carried.
What? I don't knowUUUUUUAAAAAAAGHHHH
loved the monty python references
I vaguely remember reading something saying that when crossing of the Gulf of Mexico, larger birds tend to stick to the land, while small birds would do a straight crossing, fly over the Gulf in one sitting. Did I remember that wrong? Anyone know if this is true?
Ooh - yes some small birds do, though many stick to land as well.
So what is the flying velocity of a swallow?
0:35 Nice Monty Python reference!
MORE BIRDS PLEASE
The birds are smarter than I expected! Here I was thinking it only took less energy (like slingshotting around planets to save fuel) but I learned it also takes less time too! I wonder if airplanes take advantage of this...
Hey, this is in the book! :D
Many Reddyshell ducks have come over to our locality from europe
Also greatly impacted by proximity to recently washed vehicles.
very nice video
suggestion for the next video: because we have so much of insects?
i remember hongkong ( where i live) have a lot of different birds everywhere...
Idk why but I was struggling when you said “Autumn”. Is it a northern autumn or southern autumn?
Hi, Minute Earth! Could you please make a video about left handed people? I'm left handed, and I want to learn more about myself! 😀
But could it grab it by the husk? Nice Monty Python reference there. :)
"Air speed velocity".... I see what you did there. Nice Monty Python reference.
Kudos for the Monty Python reference!
0:30 oh, I learn something new today, ftw is wtf backwards
Love the Monty Python reference.
So how does the swallow carry a coconut
Are we upside down or up side?
Crossing so many countries along the way without any visa or restrictions.. I wish humans could do the same.
It's not a question of where he grips it, it's a simple question of weight ratios!!
"swallow" "air speed velocity" instant like
Damn all the Pokemon references I saw that chatot
:'D Arcadi
Thank you a lot for avoiding the super high pitched tones while speaking... Now it's again possible to listen.
There's a chatot!
0:09 OMG CHATOT THE POKEMON I LOVE POKEMON
Animal anscentry is like a Game Genie because the genes in a creature can be changed the same way a Game Genie code can be changed by altering the letters in it.
Loved this one. I'm bird lover who lives in israel. It's amazing here.
Hahahahaha. Love the Joke with king Arthur👌
Do u see the pokemon at 0:09
You guys should make why do the male lions only have the manes
0:36 I think you mean ground speed.
0:05 A POKÉMON! Chatot!!
Nice Monty python reference ;)
Wow
is that comment about the crow flying straight a reference to the intro song of sons of anarchy???
SAMCRO
MinuteEarth 🤘
A bird does not double its airspeed, but its speed over ground. This does give a higher VMG
