Pixhawk is a great FC. Looking forward to the build series. Make sure you get the 433mhz telemetry modules as you can't broadcast legaly with the 915mhz ones in the UK.
Hi Andy. A really great introduction to the build series and some excellent component choices. Even though I went with the Naza M-V2 controller for my hex I have a lot of respect for the Pixhawk and use the APM in my fixed wings. Something I would stress during the build is the choice of Iron, solder, and flux. I've seen a lot of failures due to poor soldering. The iron needs to be strong enough to provide enough heat without it leaching away, the base plate is a very effective heatsink and cheaper low powered irons are just not suitable as the solder contacts will break away due to vibration. Another really nice to have feature is to have the telemetry streamed to the Taranis as well. I use a Zaggometry cable between the Naza and the X8R receiver. Peter King supplies a similar cable for the APM and Pixhawk. Really useful if you're flying without a smart device but still want to log the data. Looking forward to the next instalment. Regards Nidge
+sputniksam Hi. if you use 60 40 solder, it has a really low melting point. therefore most budget irons will still do the job nicely. mines a mid range setup and no failures yet.but unleaded solder absolutely. thanks for the info on the telemetry. do you use it instead of an OSD on your FPV gear? cheers for the support
+AndyRC Even though my Hex is FPV equipped I only use it for framing and not for actually use as an aid for flying so i don't have an OSD installed. I have the data from the Naza displayed on the Taranis by way of an adapted Lua script originally written by a member of the X9D FB group. This includes realtime GPS data, position, speed, altitude, etc plus the voltage and current.. This is also written to the internal SD card and exported to Google Earth for post flight analysis. In the case of your Pixhawk you can download the same data from the FC, I do it from the Taranis as the Naza doesn't store this data. WRT my comments about soldering I was inferring that some folk fail to heat the surface of the bottom plate sufficiently which results in the solder not annealing properly to the surface and the bond being very brittle and breaking away due to vibration and movement. Regards Nidge P.S. Love the new intro animation.
thank you mt friend rob made the animation :) very cool. I have one of the telemetry boards, just knew it as called something else lol. Im not sure if i will use it though as it will copy the minim osd which will be displayed on the fpv screen anyways. I totally understand the need for it though and also a good backup if the fpv fails. also if you dont fancy doing fpv one day and still want telemetry so I will include it. thanks for your support and input
Andy thanks for the series. i am putting the parts together for this build. Is there anything you would add or change since you made this video. thanks.
I wonder if you can mount gimbal, same as you reviewed before, onto this quad withous seeing propellers, cause I will be doing some project for my university degree and i want frame that can hlandle gimbal and fpv camera, I do not know if this will be better choice of frame or TBS, same price, but dead cat seems better for fpv than X frame
Hi Andy, you did the cheap build in May 2015and this one in September 2015. Seeing as how your knowledge and experience must have improved considerably since then, what would these two videos be like if you did them now January 2017 please?
Ordered everything!! Just have to sit back and wait for parcel after parcel to show up. Thanks Andy for clear instructions etc. The only thing I didn't order was the 6 mode switch for the Taranis receiver. Some reviews on BoltRC dot cm said that the switch is stiff and that a switch on the Taranis gets in the way. They regretted buying it. Are they just nutters? How's that switch going? If bad, maybe there's another one or I don't need it?
I'm sorry I should've clarified, what I'm asking is can it perform the different flight modes? in your high end copter build you added a switch to the transmitter allowing you to switch through the various flight modes effectively. would I be able to do the same?
thanks Andy rc, ill look into getting one and letting you know how it goes. by the way I'm Rhameen Kolyani, I have no idea why my phone calls me John Mcarthy. just an FYI since I've talked to you on both haha
thanks Andy rc for the quick responses and great vids. sorry for all the questions but you are the most reliable source I have. I want a decent flight controller with telemetry and return to home feature (for when I lose signal). I asked about the apm and appreciate your response, I can see how it being discontinued makes it a poor choice for future. pixhawck is great but pricey. I ordered a flysky 6ch transmitter, what fc would you recommend that can do what u want using that transmitter?
Hey Andy RC, I bought a cd3 fc based off your cheap quad build and then with this video and more research realized that I cant do the return to home feature if I lose signal. I see you bought the pixhawck but thats expensive! What do you thing about the apm2.8 Adrupilot? Would you get the Neo 6M, 7M, or M8N? Thanks for all your help.
Thank Andy for your videos.. I have a question... There is a big difference between Pixhawk PX4 2.4.6 Flight Controller And the OpenPilot CC3D Revolution?
it is yes but one thing i will say is that it doesn't have as many connections as the pixhawk full version if u are wishing to add stuff in the future.
hi andy i have a question.Since you live in the uk and these parts come from china don't you have to pay for customs fees and other duties when the price of what you order is over 30 euros or something.Because i bought all the parts for my quad separetlly in order to avoid the customs fees.Didn't you have to pay for customs for the teranis for example?
Yes, Savage Tech I am living in Denmark and we all must pay import fees and customs. Sometimes you're lucky and they ignore it, sometimes you're not and need to pay up.
Andy - the frame here seems smaller that on the "cheap build" why did you go for the smaller platform? cost or quality? Really enjoying the videos - sat through all of your 2 builds over the last 48 hours and got me really interested. Please keep it up.
appreciate the comment.back. have re-watched the video and see it. just wondering if all the drilling close to other holes is a result of the smaller platform...not decided on which i will pick - but will build one. just ordered a micro drone to learn on.
+Cillin O Foghlu smaller is lighter. the larger frame is a waste when I add my fpv gear to a landing skid rather than the frame. so I chose to have the frame smaller
I'm glad I found this series of videos as I just purchased a DJI F450 ARF (genuine) kit, the pixhawk kit as well as the Taranis X9D / X8R. This being my first quadcopter build, my brain has been getting fried with information overload from all the googling and youtubing, how fortunate for me that you've made this comprehensive guide which I thank you immensely for! Still waiting on the X9D to get started, but the only thing I'm worried about is that the LiPo's I got are only 3S 2200mAh 35C. I'm wondering if the flight time will be too short to do an autotune and whatnot. If so, could I hook up the two batteries in parallel to get some more flight time out of it? I have a 3d printer which I can use to create something to hold them in place if that would be the only issue.
Hi Andy, this and the related videos (in fact, your whole channel) are an inspiration to me and a few other weirdo's that love Sea Fishing. We are all too old now to cast a line to where the fish are and a facsimile of your device may well prove to extend our enjoyment as well as our range. Can you tell me where you get the 3mm to 8mm shaft prop adapters for the RC Timer Props?
+AndyRC We have not ordered them yet. we were looking on Ebay which was only the props and no adapters but, your comment has made us look further and they are available complete on the rcTimer website "rctimer.com/product-665.html" though it does not say what sizes the adapters are. Many thanks and many thanks to your followers for their valued imput.
AndyDid you find that the 1045 props with a 4cell battery gave you too much thrust,I'm in the early stages of a build and my quad weights in at < 1.3Kg and it gets airborne at very low throttle and it makes it impossible to tune. I strapped a 1Kg piece of wood to the bottom and it flew a lot betterGoing to have to go for smaller props and/or a 3cell I think
+AndyRC I've started off with a Naze32 board, 30a simonk esc's and sunnysky 2216 800kv motors. I got down to a P gain value of 2,. Even then, as I get the props spinning (quad still on the ground) with no additional throttle stick it wants to jump into the air. (less than 25% throttle.) Wasn't sure at one point if I'd got a faulty esc or flight controller.I guess I could lower the P values some more, but even then I don't like the idea of hovering on 25% throttle.Adding the additional weight made me think it was too much thrust, but maybe ithis is just masking the actual problem.By the way, I'm struggling to find 9" props. Any recommendations
ah i see i think most of the stock settings of the naze32 are for miniquads rather than 450 quads. I like to get my props from rctimer the carbon ones fit the 2216 nice and are well ballanced
+Iain Knowles Scrub that. rctimer have just responded to me again. they come with 5mm and 6mm adapters.I wish they'd put that info on the web page, it would save so much hassle
i hope you won't have any trouble with the frame... I've had the exact same one, and i really had problems with it, since it was too "wobbely" and caused the whole copter to be almost uncontrollable...
AndyRC Good to hear :) it is not that i had trouble with play or so, it was really that the arms had a flex to them because they were made of a cheap plastic material. Luckily yours is better in that aspect :) did you ever take a look at the hercules frame from hobbyking? i think it looks kinda cool, and i am almost ready to order one :)
hi andy, ive been following your videos and im really existed about this new build !! I have just completed the other 450 and it flys well but I really want the gps ati and RTH mode so im definately going to building this new 450!I don't know whether to stick a naza gps on this cheap 450 quad ?? 1 question though what would be the range on the cheap flysky tx ive tested it and think ive been over 250 meters! thanks again looking forward to the new vids!!
+chrissy roberts Naza is a good option too, there will be a review of that on the channel as well eventaully. although I have been really supervised how easy the pixhawk has been. the flysky is rated at about 800 meters
that is good range for such a cheap tx im hopeing my fatshark googles come in post tomoz cant wait to try them out! Ive just order the cheap £30 gimble which I think is plug and play but I will need some help on seting it up to my radio to pan and tilt! if I use the cc3d and take off the flight mode chanel and use ch5 and ch6 would loseing the flight mode on cc3d make it hard to fly the quad??
no if you go into the cc3d settings and change the flight mode to 1 and leave your only mode to stabalise then the quad will stay in stabilize mode and you can run the spare channel for your gimbal. dont you have any more spare slots on your receiver?
yes there is 1 spare slot ch5 but can you run pan and tilt from just 1 channel?? bit of a noob question I have been on youtube a lot but still don't really understand about setting up properly!
Andy. Did you get stung for UK import tax for all the stuff you ordered from banggang? I've always been suspicious pulling the trigger on a Taranis from bangbang. Is it genuine and did you save much?
Already built the cheap one! Now now going to upgrade parts, same motors, hobby wing 20a rotor escs + APM 2.6 instead of pixhawk. But still waiting for some banggood replacements of the cheap esc's and motors because they were pretty much shit;0
Oh yes and one other thing, my fpv stuff didn't work, so I now have applied for a refund, do you know where to get the boscam cheap vtx/rx's in Europe, because I can't find many vendors in Europe. Oh and great vid btw

I have had nothing but problems with Hobbyking so it is up to you. banggood customer service is better. send them an email to say it doesnt work and usually they send another for free
Yes I know, but I decided to get my money back so that I could first look for anther retailer, I am going to go with banggood again then, but I think I will buy my LiPo and quanum v2 goggles at hk probably, I am going to pay with paypal so I have some kind of insurance.

Hey Andy, like the progression always building on previous experiences. Don't know if you've found this channel yet he's done a series on most major flight controllers here is his pixhawk set multi video's: ruclips.net/video/uH2iCRA9G7k/видео.html .. May find it handy for something.
+James Moss I will be going into more detail than this as I find quite a few important things missing in those tutorials. you can work out the missing parts but hopefully I can fill in the gaps here with my experience. all the best
Well done Abby and looking forward to the rest of the build
+Darren Howes she will be glad of that thank you! :)
Excellent Andy!
I look forward to the next installments!
thanks for the support
Well Done! Can't wait for the next episode! Thank you.
+Tom MacBride thanks it should be done this week
Great new video series. Can't wait for all the videos to come out. Great work !!!

Pixhawk is a great FC. Looking forward to the build series. Make sure you get the 433mhz telemetry modules as you can't broadcast legaly with the 915mhz ones in the UK.

andy where did you place the battery,Also how long is your flight time and what would be the best battery. Thanks
+AndyRc do you think 1045 props would do good on 1000 kv motors?
Andy thanks for the series. i am putting the parts together for this build. Is there anything you would add or change since you made this video. thanks.
+pat ballard i used rc timer carbon props. i think thats all i changed

+Perma Psy yes totally incorrect, the switch is fantastic. load of nonsense as you will see how convenient it is in the next few episodes.
do you mind adding what each link is for?
so the Fly Sky transmitter bought in the cheap quad build can do those features?
+John McCarty do you mean will it work with the naza lite? yes it will
Hi Andy, I'm watching this and think that it's great. I wonder what the total weight will be with Gimbal and all?
about 1.9kg with battery :-)
I'm sorry I should've clarified, what I'm asking is can it perform the different flight modes? in your high end copter build you added a switch to the transmitter allowing you to switch through the various flight modes effectively. would I be able to do the same?

What's the total price with the terranis and quad in its initial state
Thank Andy for your videos..
I have a question...
There is a big difference between Pixhawk PX4 2.4.6 Flight Controller
And the OpenPilot CC3D Revolution?
+Gera Hammer yes the pixhawk is a complete auto pilot system for big quads and the cc3d is suited to smaller agile quads.
+AndyRC thank you for your answer.. Another small question: the Pixhawk light version is enough for return home feature?
it is yes but one thing i will say is that it doesn't have as many connections as the pixhawk full version if u are wishing to add stuff in the future.
+AndyRC I will take it in my consideration.. Keep doing great videos :)
no problem i think the lite version also doesnt have a speaker /buzzer but thats not always a bad thing!
hi andy i have a question.Since you live in the uk and these parts come from china don't you have to pay for customs fees and other duties when the price of what you order is over 30 euros or something.Because i bought all the parts for my quad separetlly in order to avoid the customs fees.Didn't you have to pay for customs for the teranis for example?

I imagine u possibly have a different one. there's multiple clones out there. the one in this video is solid as a rock with no movement
AndyRC
Good to hear :)
it is not that i had trouble with play or so, it was really that the arms had a flex to them because they were made of a cheap plastic material. Luckily yours is better in that aspect :)
did you ever take a look at the hercules frame from hobbyking? i think it looks kinda cool, and i am almost ready to order one :)
+muh1h1 there's no flex in these ones. I'm not aware of the HK frame but this ones doing great so I'll be keeping it :-)

oh, i din't want you to change your frame, i just wanted to know what you think about it :)
this ones fi e fingers crossed :-) i have some other frames that can change in the future though

+AndyRC can 1045 props go on 1000 kv motors?
