  • Sheffield Five Weirs Walk - River Don, City Centre to Meadowhall
We start in Sheffield City Centre at Lady's Bridge. We pass under the city's inner ring road before finding the first feature of the walk. Cobweb Bridge takes the footpath over the river Don, whilst also navigating underneath the old Sheffield Victoria railway station on the arches above. A genius and unique solution to the problem.
It is then we encounter out first weir - Walk Mill Weir.
This next section is one of the highlights for me. We pass over Bailey Bridge and thread our way through the enchanting Birdcage Walk.
After a very short spell of road to navigate we find ourselves back on the riverside and the next Weir - Burton's Weir. We now start to see a bit more greenery as we leave behind the sights of the busy roads of the Don Valley as we enter the Salmon Pastures Nature Reserve. Here we see the stone from the old Attercliffe Salmon Pastures school from 1908.
From Washford Bridge we now encounter a closed section of path due to the recent floods in 2019. After a short diversion through back roads and scrap yards, we rejoin the path at East Coast Road.
The next weir we encounter is Sanderson's Weir and roughly the half way point of the trail. Another nice tranquil off road section.
A few more miles of good quality foot path follows alongside the river. A few more roads to cross before we reach Hawke Street. From here we must divert away from the river for a short time as the river cuts through the heart of the Forgemaster Steel Mills, which are out of bounds.
We rejoin the River Don at Brightside Weir. From here on, it's an easy going final mile or so until we are joined by the Meadowhall Shopping Centre on our right. And here we find the fifth and final Hadfield's Weir.
A really enjoyable walk with a difference. A great variety of terrain, sights, smells and history. The history of the Don Valley includes boom times of the steel beginnings, the target of the German bombers, the sharp decline of industry and manufacturing and finally the regeneration and re-growth that we see today.

My channel was set up in 2020 mainly to feature my running adventures. I planned to film and showcase the days out and destinations my running travels took me. Mainly the Peak District and the sights and marvels of Sheffield and the surrounding regions.
However due to Covid restrictions, I found a new interest in researching and exploring old abandoned places - railway lines, canal, woodland, parks to name a few.
So the videos you'll find will be mainly be of those things. Of course, where possible I'll be running to my destination.

Thanks very much Bernard 👍🙂 glad you enjoyed them. It is indeed a shame about the path. Its not a nice detour dodging the lorries on the industrial estates.

Ahhh Noose & Gibbet. Not been in there for about 20 odd years 😄. I used to frequent the Cocked Hat quite a lot when I worked out that way. Sadly gone now.
