One of the best drummers alive. Not sure why the comparisons (most that do are not drummers). Those that play drums look at this man and know he is one of the best alive. He is utterly amazing on many categories: independence, stick control, finger control, afro-cuban, jazz, double-pedal, ostinatos, on and on and on.
That was nuts! Total limb independence, groove, dynamics, timing, chops, and whatever else. When Yamaha came out with the Akira Jimbo signature snare, I was like who is he and why does he deserve a signature snare. This recording pretty much sums it up.
Not only an absolute master of the drums but a brilliant song writer & an inventor?!. Honestly, everyone who loves to drum should keep learning and practicing but don't fool yourselves...This guy is in a class all his own! Pure Genius!
This is proof that there truly is no such thing as "the best drummer of all time". Once you get to a certain level, everyone is unique. Can Akira Jimbo swing as well as Elvin Jones? Maybe, maybe not. But they both deserve a place in famous drummer history due to their contributions.
Yeah, at least that's how I see it, being a poor musician in all objectivity. I'm curious what the best drummers really think of each other. It must be some interesting insight. But still, yeah, it's about music in the end and at that level I'm sure they're pretty free to express their ideas, not being too constrained by lack of proficiency... Good post.
Comparing Akira Jimbo to other drummers in the same style or different styles completely misses the reason why Mr. Jimbo is, probably, the best drummer in the world - All due respect to Buddy Rich & so many others. Akira Jimbo pioneered the instrument beyond what has been done in the last 50+ years. He has, essentially, made the drums a solo instrument which is/was unheard of. Absolutely Brilliant & Amazing!!!
Man I can't tell you how many times I watched this video (and independence) as a teen. I went off him for a long time but coming back to it all these years later and knowing alot more about drumming I am even more blown away. Akira Jimbo is a fucking legend.
It's not just at 5:18, this whole piece is all Akira himself, he's triggering off midi samples throughout the whole song - it's pretty much "his thing". He has microphones on every piece of his kit, and he has programmed all the samples to go off accordingly with each hit.
Jimbo has like 20 more years of experience and along with his mastery of 4-way independence, he invented a new way to play the drums as a solo instrument. It'd be an unfair comparison because while Portnoy was an innovative Metal drummer (that influenced me), Jimbo could be considered a master. For fuck's sake the guy doesn't use any muffling (moon gels) on his skins!
All us Drummers the world over are nodding sagely thinking ...yep thats how it should be done. No need for excessive speed and power this is all swing & groove. Dont think ive ever hears a better tune up on the kit, all on point. Bravo Jimbo
Akira works at his art and it shows. Discipline ,practice and use of techgnology helps us feel his approach to the drumset. I love this dude. Keep practicing ..1 love
Dude, there was a video on here with Jimbo "dueling" Bozzio. It was from one of their Japanese shows together and even though Bozzio had all those drums, Jimbo's kit sounded bigger and more complex. It's gone now:( I wish I would've d/l'ed it when I had the chance...
See this guy first time tonight and uhm...thought I know all brilliant "old school" western drummers (like Cobham, Phillips, Vinnie C., Bozzio a.s.o -drummer myself btw.) but this one?!! Akira is a Monster, a Beast, fluid and precise, with full creative/musical output (unlike some modern drum robots like Lang)...honestly I'm speechless - a whole new world opens up for me..thx RUclips
even using the shell of the drum to play @.@ now thats the first time ive seen someone to do that. akira jimbo jsut surprises me everytime no matter how many times ive seen him play
Every drumer has something DIFFERENT to offer as far as technique. Some drummers practice more than other and become very good expressing rhythm on thier instrument. Its called GROWTH...Keep practicing and believing in YOUR TECHNIQUE and you will have something DIFFERENT to offer our world of DRUMNASTICS. Stay Focused. Peace dawg..1love
Too bad he doesn't get that much exposure in the U.S.... He gets the most exposure in the Japanese Jazz and European scene... Few people in the U.S. know about him except for people in the drumming community...
The creativity, technical abilities and just all around energy he possesses and provides is top-tier. In my top 5 for best drummers to ever grace the instrument! And yes he is triggering all that music in real time himself which makes it even more insane haha
@stiktrik I don't suppose you have the song Kaleidoscope from this dvdv, do you? It use to be on youtube, and I've been trying to find for over a year now. I would be beyond happy if you could upload it somehow.
That "infamous" Vic Firth video was just a demonstration of what he does recently, being a one-man's band playing the base and music with the drums. He basically invented that stuff, wich he's already doing here also by the way. Outside of that, one of the reasons why Akira doesn't play like this anymore is that i think he has messed up hands, uses braces on his wrists and doesn't use singles anymore, all double strokes basically. He's also 60 years old, people change musically. Still a master and one of the greatest fusion's drummers ever.
YAMAHA trigger (DT-10, DT20, or DT-30[discontinued]) with YAMAHA sound module, watch the Akira explain this on Behind the D.S. '92 from my channel too...
@hotdrumchick he's got a lot of solo albums. he's also the drummer for the japanese band called casiopea. he's worked with brian bromberg under the name jb project. and u shud also check out synchronized dna, a drum duo group with him and t-square's hiroyuki noritake
well, "idols" is one thing and "realizing skills-music sense-grace" is other. I have mine, a drummer that has influenced me in many ways, as human and artist (actually I'm a Visual Artist) in such concept as Identity, the name's Jimmy Chamberlin, but man... it's pretty obvious that people like Akira and maaany others are in a higher level... must say that I prefer by far to Dave Weckl... and yes, there's subjectivity so... that guy Portnoy... no words.
Now you're just speaking of subjectivity. If he likes drumming more than anything, which he obviously does, than there's nothing wrong with him not having social life. To set the record straight, he's been in multiple bands, and has been playing shows for 20 years. I'm sure he has more social life than average people who sit around the computer, calling Facebook socializing.
Insane....all that and then playing the clave on top of it .I solely concentrated on the clave and I dont think i missed a beat.....let me rephrase that.....AKIRA JIMBO didnt !!!!!!!
This song is about all the drummers who throw coins into wishing wells and wish they were as good as Akira Jimbo is.
Finally, a song about me

Only one word will do : Masterful 👌🏻
I'm thoroughly convinced this guy is an alien, even still to this day
This is proof that there truly is no such thing as "the best drummer of all time". Once you get to a certain level, everyone is unique. Can Akira Jimbo swing as well as Elvin Jones? Maybe, maybe not. But they both deserve a place in famous drummer history due to their contributions.

Right there with ya. I had this on VHS then I let a "friend" borrow it and never seen it again. But yes this guy is an absolute legend.
こんばんは。この度はカシオペアさんのLIVEへご招待ありがとうございます。めちゃめちゃカッコイイですね。こんなにカッコイイバンドの演奏、ライブそのもの観たこと体感したことない。
hands down one of the best drummers ever. Insanity man!
It's not just at 5:18, this whole piece is all Akira himself, he's triggering off midi samples throughout the whole song - it's pretty much "his thing". He has microphones on every piece of his kit, and he has programmed all the samples to go off accordingly with each hit.
So, not only is he a self-taught virtuoso but he also broke through to a whole new dimension of drumming like never before!!
he is a master of masters!!! totally amazing independence and execution.
Akira es uno de los mejores bateristas del mundo.
i friking love akira jimbo, who woud of thunk it, that a Japanese drummer, has one of the sweetest latin flavours around.. its incredible..
This is so bright in tone, great to listen to the creativity.
nunca vi um baterista tão técnico Akira e de outro planeta!!!
freaking awesome.. one of the top drummers all the time.. INSANE!
Now THATS what I call a drum performance. Legendary.
Jimbo has like 20 more years of experience and along with his mastery of 4-way independence, he invented a new way to play the drums as a solo instrument. those shoes are insane. so is his drumming
I think the drumming is a byproduct of wearing those shoes
He gets super powers from drumming with those shoes.
***** I think that is a reasonable conclusion
Akira Jimbo is from the future
Total Beast of a Drummer!!!
How can this have just 280K views? This is alien drumming here...not of this Earth.
1:53 is just flat SICK
he is a master of independence... much respect
also of solid groove....
Akira works at his art and it shows. Discipline ,practice and use of techgnology helps us feel his approach to the drumset. I love this dude. Keep practicing ..1 love
This guy can really play. Great boots too!
Dude, there was a video on here with Jimbo "dueling" Bozzio. It was from one of their Japanese shows together and even though Bozzio had all those drums, Jimbo's kit sounded bigger and more complex. It's gone now:( I wish I would've d/l'ed it when I had the chance...

insane performance, he must be an alien !
Some of those samples remind me of the victory music in Mario Kart.
Too bad he doesn't get that much exposure in the U.S.... He gets the most exposure in the Japanese Jazz and European scene... Few people in the U.S. know about him except for people in the drumming community...
this is the best all of time.
That was amazing.
Man, Akira Jimbo is one of my favorite drummers ever, but what is up with his outfit LOL
Wonderful work. Thanks for sharing.keep it up.
the master of independence \m/
Гениальный мастер!
The only other drummer that blows me away other than Dennis Chambers! Both amazing and innovators with their own style
Check marco minneman
How many drummers and
percussionists are playing in this piece??
Oh just one....ok🤣🤣🤣🤣
I mean. Yeah. Look at what he's doing. He's playing exactly what you're hearing, all on his own
Tremendo mejor Que Horacio !!! Increíble
The creativity, technical abilities and just all around energy he possesses and provides is top-tier. In my top 5 for best drummers to ever grace the instrument! And yes he is triggering all that music in real time himself which makes it even more insane haha

Holy crap. Night and day from his Vic Firth vid.
+Alex Stewart also, sweet shirt
That "infamous" Vic Firth video was just a demonstration of what he does recently, being a one-man's band playing the base and music with the drums.

Maintaining 2/3 clef while doing bossa nova rthym drum solo
You mean 3/2 clave!
one of the best drummers of our world( and maybe ohters too)....
sounds like fantastic. .
My favorite part was the machine gun cowbell.
Love his drumming, I'm so envious of his independence...but what the hell is he wearing?
Once Musician, One Instrument, Akira Jimbo
At 5:18, he's hitting the rims and it's sort of "triggered." Anybody know what the technology's called?
You are right. No one can play 12h over 20 years if he don´t love what he does over any other think.
Good God..........when you are this good what is left for you to accomplish?
Masterpiece!
He has CD's out with a band he played for called "Casiopea" but they're only released in Japan
He has 6 Videos out in the U.S. though
the perfection exists!
YAMAHA trigger (DT-10, DT20, or DT-30[discontinued]) with YAMAHA sound module, watch the Akira explain this on Behind the D.S. '92 from my channel too...

and u shud also check out synchronized dna, a drum duo group with him and t-square's hiroyuki noritake
his ability to do anything while keeping the 2/3 clave on his left foot is like el negro's..INSANE
I was waiting for Terrence Trent Darby to come out and start singing😂Wrong “Wishing Well”
is it wrong . to know the name of akira jimbo but not know the song name. seriously . i just type akira jimbo red shoe. tadda this is the vid.

ECCEZIONALE!
Quando la fantasia, supportata da una ottima tecnica, produce un assolo che ti "acchiappa".
the word "awesome" is appropriate here!

Increible...
5:27 the beginning of something really special
he's a master of the quarter note pulse.

OMG really good job :)
well, "idols" is one thing and "realizing skills-music sense-grace" is other. Great !!
And, that's how is done!... Any questions? 😁

Red shoes FTW Akira is awesome
Great Shoes :D
IT's a reflection of the person himself, clearity, spirituality all in alignment. He should try martial arts next :)
Insane....all that and then playing the clave on top of it .I solely concentrated on the clave and I dont think i missed a beat.....let me rephrase that.....AKIRA JIMBO didnt !!!!!!!
I followed the clave too, more than once, and no he doesn't miss or goes out of time with it.
Akira is a machine and one of the greatest.
he started playing drums when he was 18yrs old'''''''''''
that left foot clave pattern= flawess
this is so nuts
