  • What exactly does the Bible teach about the morality of debt and wisdom in money matters. Does "owe no one anything" reflect a moral rule on what the Bible teaches about borrowing? Or is it really about something different? This and more in today's verse by verse Bible study through Romans 13:8-10. Continuing our study through the book of Romans and trying to learn how to think biblically about everything.

I bought land for $11000 cash. I spent $400 cash per month on building materials and built my home in 4 years while living in an airstream. I now have lived in my house debt free for 20 years.

Clarity is important. I remember on one occasion when I had an urgent need, a friend/manager had told me his pastor said Christians should not borrow and on that basis I didn't get a pennyworth of loan from him, so we went to the bank and paid double (in fact, the interest was slightly higher than the loan). Sadly there was a turn of events and months later he was in need and called on me to give him a certain amount as a gift. Wish I had the full amount! Indeed, poor exegesis or eisegesis affects the church adversely. Thanks, Pastor Mike, you are a blessing.

Having lived in Taiwan for over 5 years, I'm very familiar with the "Buddhist" rite that Mike is speaking of. Generally, the burning of Ghost Money, as they call it, is done in large metal containers, often in front of family stores. The practice is really more of a sort of ancestor worship as they also offer up food (that the deceased was fond of) on folding card tables at the same time. I've even seen Chicken McNuggets offered. Of course, they eat the food themselves at the end of the day. It would be funny if it wasn't so sad.

    Great teaching.
I have this weird rule where I don't borrow to anyone who is trying to pay off money borrowed. They are struggling to pay debt but want to lend from me. I just feel that if I do I am causing them to have more problems and burdens.
If I am to give I would like to do so without wanting it in return. But this needs wisdom.
My experience with people always wanting to get from me are "paying off debt from people who borrowed from them to pay debt this circle of debt and borrowing.
I hope sincerely I am not doing wrong according to the scriptures. Towards God.
This does not make me better than the next or less.
    Just seems right.
But if there is a need that needs to be met. Well, i struggle to see this, as majority of people have what is needed. But ask for money to pay debts. But live.

Such a needful lesson, thank you Mike! I do have one question though: Is this passage talking about love we should show to fellow believers or to everyone in general? The fact that he says "love each other" makes me think this is specifically speaking of how we should act towards other Christians. Of course, this doesn't mean we should not be loving those in the world, but I do have a bit of trouble finding that line. Biblically speaking, what are some of the differences between how we are to love fellow believers and how we are to love those still in the world?
    Grace and peace,
    Judah Matthews

    • @MikeWinger
      @MikeWinger  6 лет назад +25

I have wondered the same thing. I think that the emphasis is on believers loving believers, and this is consistent with other passages that have the same emphasis. The natural question that seems to come from this realization is "then how is my love for the world different or less than the love I have for believers?". I think the main difference is that of community or family status. The unsaved are not to be loved less in the sense of care, concern, good intentions for them, effort to reach out to them, or desire for their benefit. But all this love does not make them part of the community of believers, the Body of Christ. This means that my interaction with them is different in some important ways. For one, while I outreach to them I do not fellowship with them and can not say, in unison with them, "we are the body of Christ, the family of God!" or "we are united eternally as brother and sister!" Someone might think this is like saying that we just don't care as much about the world as we do about believers but this seems off to me for a couple reasons. We are constantly inviting the world to become believers! We are asking them to receive Christ and be part of this family and fellowship forever. It's like saying "I love you but I could do so even better if you were part of my family. We have a room for you, the adoption papers are all drawn up, come and join!".
Another example is the idea of provision. When you provide you do so for your own household first and then, out of the overflow of this you share with people who aren't part of that household. You don't feed the neighbor at the expense of your own kids eating that day. You might sacrifice your own dinner to feed your neighbor or your kids but if you only had enough to feed yourself, your neighbor or your child, you would be right to feed your child. So, when it comes to prioritizing helping the needy, I think we ought to help believers before unbelievers (all the while hoping for and reaching out for those unbelievers to be saved). A passage that I think spells this out pretty well is...
Galatians 6:10 (NKJV) Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all, especially to those who are of the household of faith.
Somebody might object that we are being bad witnesses by helping the believing widow over the unbelieving widow but I disagree and think that Jesus says the opposite is true.
John 13:35 (NKJV) By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.”
So it is this obligation to help fellow believers (especially those who you know face to face, locally) that is going to say to the unbeliever, "look, they are a real community of people who really love and care for each other" rather than "look, here's a group who gives handouts to get me to join them".
This would be a worthwhile topical study sometime.
      Mike

@@MikeWinger That's how I see it. I've seen someone pay for someone else's unneeded luxury at the expense of feeding his own family and thinks it was justified because he felt obligated. I think family is always your first obligation, next to the Lord of course. Is it possible to be justified in something like that if you believe it is unto the Lord? It seems degrading to the family.

I already have quite a bit of debt due to past school (no degree to show for it) and also from a vehicle purchase a couple years ago. I agree about lending without expecting to receive. As an American pastor in a very poor Third World city, I do a _lot_ of lending. But I _genuinely fear_ for the vast majority of those who borrow, because they make absolutely no effort to repay one peso. And they never apologize or say anything about the loan. I fear for them because they are stealing from God.
Would it be wrong to warn them? Or would that seem like I'm chasing the money?

In Islam having debt is not a sin, but accepting or paying interest IS a sin. There’s a Mortgage system that Muslims use to borrow money interest free. Expert economists agree that the Islamic system for buying a home (no interest) would allow Americans to get out of debt. Putting money into the stock market (investment) and earning money is permissible.
I am a Muslim and was curious what christianity and Judaism says about interest.

If you fell into hard times and really can't pay without being able to meet the needs of the family, I think it is the right thing to do. Search your own heart and pray and I think you will have peace in your decision.

I'm only a few minutes into the video---and let me add that you're my favorite Bible teacher, Mike Winger! About debt and buying a house, well, I stopped getting into debt years ago... decades ago... and all my needs have been made. For housing, I was renting, but I also hadn't set down roots to stay in various places, as I did some moving for different reasons. Then when I moved to my current place, I sensed that God was saying that this area was to be my home (after decades of living in three different states). I still didn't own my own place, though. Then my mother passed away (Dad was already gone), and the will said nothing about Mom's condo, and my two siblings agreed together that I should have the condo! For free! I now own a condo of the perfect size for me, in a really nice neighborhood, with good neighbors. I need to pay a monthly HOA fee, yet I have the money for that.
Not only the condo, but when Dad was dying, my car was 10 years old, needing more and more repair work done. (I had bought it used--had never owned a new car.) Mom said to keep repairing it because when Dad died, I'd get an inheritance. So after the inheritance came in, I bought a brand new car (2000 Nissan Maxima), right off the parking lot. (Thanks, Dad!) Had that car for 15 years! I paid cash for it. Didn't have to get into debt for it.
Then at 15 years, the repairs were getting more expensive. Mom said she had some money in a savings account that she didn't need. She paid for my second new car (2015 Toyota Camry), brand new, right off the lot. Paid cash for it... Well, with Mom's very generous gift. Never got into debt for it.
So it is possible to live without being in debt. I realize that a condo isn't as expensive as a house, but I also know of a couple who built their house in stages as they had the money.
I'll listen to the rest of the video now, yet I wanted to share these real-life experiences that it's possible to live without financial debt and to have one's needs met in wonderful ways! (Because God is a wonderful Father!)
Oh! I forgot! When I was living with a roommate in the house where she grew up, I was driving her father's old pick-up truck that ate two quarts of oil every three weeks. I couldn't afford to buy my own vehicle. (Had sold mine before moving there, but I can't remember why.) Couldn't afford to buy myself a car. Then my roommate/friend bought a used car from her place of employment, and she GAVE me her old one! For free.
I could share lots of little stories, too, of God our Father's provision. I even got two graduate degrees without getting into debt, one of which was from a Tier 1 research university.
I believed God when He said to owe no man anything except to love one another. I had to wait sometimes for Him to provide, although I think He was making sure that I was really trusting Him and not just talking out of my mouth, but living it in my life. Would I give in, or would I trust Him to provide?
Our Father in heaven really does supply our needs when we trust Him to do so, walking in that faith, in that trust (and sometimes being patient, waiting for Him to answer!). In my experience, He doesn't provide in the way of the world system but in His own Kingdom economy, if I can word it that way.
And now I shall listen to the rest of the video!
God bless you and your wife and your staff, Mike Winger.

Well I believe Paul said owe no one nothing...but is was more of a counsel not necessarily a command therefore it is not a sin to owe money. What do you owe God when you sin?
Also, there is not one single verse that says to "ask God for forgiveness." Repentance and/or confession does not mean asking for forgiveness. Forgiveness is given by God and received by faith when we repent and confess our sin. Asking for forgiveness is not a biblical way to be forgiven.

    • @adaneboateng

@@graftme3168 i also think a good question would be "Why" do owe God when you sin? You basically owe God a prayer of repentance or plead for forgiveness whenever you sin. Sin isn't necessarily always an act, could be lustful, hatred, evil & unclean thoughts, an impure heart, etc. You live for Christ therefore your life should be aligned with His word & will.. You sin whenever you veer of that very route

@@graftme3168 asking for forgiveness of sins is scriptural. The famous "The Lord's Prayer" @ Matthew 6:9- goes as follows "Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.

"We have to be reasonable about these things" 22:30 so you set aside what God says "owe no one anything but love" because you deem God not to be reasonable? Do you think it is a light thing to become a servant of another, when God says not to? When God says the wicked borrow, you say only not paying back is the only wrong? You should tremble at God's Word and not set it aside because it seems unreasonable: "do not lean on your own understanding".
I think the mistake you make is not considering net debt. "Owe no one anything" actually means what God says. It does not say that you cannot borrow, but that you cannot owe. This means you can borrow if you already have the means to pay it, in other words if you have equity you can take a mortgage because you can walk away and "own no one anything" since the bank can get the home. But you have to be sure that you actually have the equity, or if they auction it off and cannot recover your loan, then you owe them and they are your master for the gap.
The reasonable thing is to believe God's Word, not to set it aside because it doesn't sound good to your thinking.

Christians shouldn't have to ask for a loan. If you state that you're having a hard time, then more wealthy Christians should automatically give them what they need. The wealthy Christian would know that God would compensate them for their gifts.

Did Jesus have debt? Did Jesus have material things and possessions? Grow in His likeness.

I'm living proof that you can own a home without being in debt. So you're statement is false. Granted it's a mobile home, but it's a home.

      Hello again speedlearner,
I wonder if you saw Doug's recent video where he tried to refute William Lane Craig. It was very revealing of his thought process.
You said "you're statement is false". Which statement is that?

    • @speedlearner
      @speedlearner 6 лет назад

You said it isn't possible to own a house without a loan. I own a mobile home. I paid for it with straight cash. So that statement is false. But let's go on.
Your misreading of the word if disturbs me greatly. Keep in mind that I'm well versed in the Italian and Latin languages. So I know how to read the word if properly. So God had no intention for any Israelite to be in debt. God did, however, anticipate that some of them would fall into debt. So he was trying to make the best out of a bad situation that they would get themselves into.
How do I keep people out of debt in the first place? First I GIVE them a copy of Harry Lorayne's Memory Book. After they read it, I tell them to watch all of my memory videos. Once they watch those, I tell them to watch all of my Italian and math videos. Once they do that, I tell them to apply for jobs. They find jobs much faster when they do. Then they earn an income and they get out of debt quickly. And they never get into debt again. Problem solved.

By the way, to go into debt is to say that God can't provide for all of your needs. And this statement is false. You don't want to transmit that statement to anyone. Case closed.

I'm always open to hearing correction or disagreement but the problem is I didn't say that. I definitely don't preach that.

I shall quote you. "and for most of us it means never owning a home, because you will have to pay rent. You'll never going to be able to buy a home straight out." Do you know what most RUclipsrs hear when they hear this? They hear that's impossible to own a home. Your first statement after this should have been, "It may be difficult to achieve this goal, but it's entirely possible." And you're welcome to use me as an an example. That's why I objected.

This guy is a scary teacher. He twists the word to fit his own desires. Just bc you call yourself a pastor doesn't make what you are teaching here correct. You didn't give a wise study, you manipulated the word to fit your own agenda. Shame on you.

Listen....A lifestyle where Financial debt is routinely acquired; is unacceptable. No Christian at all should EVER take on financial debt, as the Bible is clear that none can service their debt(s) and God, at the same time. Do not be deceived....Learn to live by faith, and God will provide.
If you have a lifestyle that includes financial debt, then you are NOT a legitimate servant of God.
