Speaking to Rachel Wearmouth in front of a live audience at the New Statesman Politics Live conference on 27th June, Keir Starmer addressed rising inflation and the cost of living crisis - but refused to commit to recommended pay rises for public sector workers.
The Labour leader also addressed claims he's planning to "stuff" the House of Lords with Labour peers despite pledging to abolish the upper house.

Come on NS, you can't let Starmer off the hook on not mentioning BREXIT as a key factor in our economic decline!

Brexit is probably the latest contributing factor...

@@cheekyboy5000All Labour MPs, outside the shadow cabinet, were free to show support for strikers. All shadow cabinet members were free to visit picket lines in their own constituencies. Labour's view is that a future Labour government is going to actively attempt to bring both sides together to resolve industrial disputes. The shadow cabinet do not have the luxury of playing at inconsequential soapbox student politics hoping by grandstanding to get brownie points from the right-on left wing of the party.

Actual windfall tax on energy companies to reduce costs of energy. Closer ties with the EU (whilst not even rejoining the SM or the CU) to improve the economy. That’s two large differences
Try researching, yes it won't be easy, and nothing will improve over night, and Rachel Reeves has said it won't be easy, but it will improve! We were doing so well under Labour until silicone valley crashed and all the money Tories had invested was gone and took us with it, and guess who was in charge of the banks and pulled funding and made us bankrupt and blamed Labour, no other than Sunak himself!! I sort of like that he stammered through it because that means hes thinking about how his words will effect people
This is such a disappointing interview, especially from the journalist's point of view - who asked good questions but unfortunately didn't follow up even when he didn't answer them (which was the case with most of the questions she asked).

Please tell me, knowing his u-turn history on the promises he makes, why would I want to vote for his party which now seem to be non Tory in the name only? :/
Because their policies aren't benched or thrown in the bin, they simply move their priorities to what is going on.
Not getting the Starmer thing. I think the bandwagon is something of an illusion; the government are falling apart after 13 years of rule and wonder if the current pole leads will translate to votes. Even in this fairly conversational/friendly setting he comes across as quite awkward and lacking vision - his pitch seems to be he is from an ordinary background and will be nicer about making the same economic decisions that Sunak will. The country has had so many moments over the last 13 years that have shown the need for deep structural change and investment, not sure anything he is saying gets to the heart of the matter on anything.
Er so abolishing the HoL is not a thing? Creating the Great British Energy Company is not a thing? Aiming for energy independence is not a thing? Reducing energy poverty by stepping up on insulating homes is not a thing? Aiming to increase inward investment and the number of better paying jobs is not a thing? Insulating homes you mean doing the bare minimum. Nothing wrong with zero hour contracts. @@andrewwalsh2755 - "....How about wiping out the national debt too?...."
But that can never happen.....under fractional reserve banking - - due to taking money off of the gold standard. The ability to print money 'as and when' the situation suits, will always incur more debt and lessen the actual £/$/etc... worth in your pocket [inflation aside]
Looking into how money/currency works [past and present] puts the national debt problem into context.
Debt is [modern day] currency.

@@WhoAmEye_WhoAreEwe... Quite right!... No single term govt could ever hope to wipe out the national debt (£2.5 Trillion +)... It was built up over 40+ years, by successive govts, in the belief that endless borrowing is fine... IF... interests rates are low...and gdp growth exceeds interest rates... and QE doesn't transform long term into short term debt... and somebody wishes to buy (not sell in panic) govt debt... That is still the prevailing economic wisdom today... Economic growth, fuelled by increasing national debt, hoping to "reduce debt as a measure of the economy" (debt/gdp), hoping increasing gdp will counteract the pressure of increasing actual national debt, as time passes... and if it doesn't, who cares, because it's now another govts problem...
However... past performance and economic circumstances are not a guarantee of future circumstances: What if your energy source was mainly domestic, but is now foreign (coal, oil, gas etc)?... What if you need cheap imported labour to achieve the essential growth... and you need imported food to feed them?... Where will you house them, how will you educate their kids, how will you provide healthcare... and what will you do when climate change makes water a scarce commodity?
Vote Zionist Labour... keep borrowing, with fully costed plans, reducing debt as a measure of the economy, while actual debt rises... diverting the cash into the pockets of rogues... After all, that's how we got here today... and it worked for Thames Water, until now...
On shore wind is a terrible idea for many many reasons, there a lots of green alternatives that could be used instead, if he pushes that he's going to lose votes from a sizeable chunk of people.

you know I understand the notion of following Gramsci's principle when dealing with the media - if you're on the left mind you. we have to find a way to relay our message that's easily digestible and not open to ridicule or vilification from the right, who control the majority of our media outlets in Britain. Corbyn and momentum were terrible at this. however, the reality is that this man has failed in his mission in that he's misread what the public want. a majority of this country want new visionary ideas - like legalising cannabis - and no leader (except from the greens and lib dems) is brave enough to venture into this topic. the cannabis industry can raise billions for the treasury, and instead of talking about new visionary ideas - Starmer hampers on about how he didn't have any food in his fridge growing up. they're infantilising the masses through their messaging and it's going to backfire

Im amazed at his media handler’s inability to stop him saying um at least once every sentence
Too much hammering of the Tories, not enough talking about the plans Labour have.
I guess Labour can get away with this right up to the general election, but they run the risk of spending so much time constantly harping about the Tories, they won't get any message through as to what they would do in government.
Time to start talking policy in-depth and sound like the next government.
Also, Starmer completely fails to land anything memorable - he's quite affable, seems like a nice chap, but I struggle to recall anything he's said - it's not dull, just not memorable.
I've read some opinion that he actually isn't that nice, but you will always read things like that - when you reach a position of power such as Starmer has, knives will be out.
But in terms of being memorable and in terms of sound bytes, perhaps what the country needs now is not a culture of personality, but a culture of a hard working government.
We've had decades of all mouth no trousers.
I agree with his points about how Labour couldn't go on with a more hard left bent, simply because the country was never ready for that and probably never will be.
What I don't agree with was the way he made a lot of promises echoing what were actually quite tame left wing ideas, gained power over the party, then dropped them all - and purged the party of the left.
We'll never know what a Corbyn led government would be like - what we do know is that the idealism was very much that. On the world stage, Corbyn as PM would've been an unmitigated disaster.
You cannot have a PM wearing his pride on his chest just waiting for a fall - because that's _exactly_ who Corbyn is. A man of noble ideals, but a thorny, uncompromising and truly stubborn man - blinded by his own values, unwilling to bend slightly in the wind and thus brittle.
Honest, honourable but ultimately a man to fall on his own sword in the end.
We can only hope with Starmer, that is was the politics of knowing it was the only way for Labour to regain power again was to shrug off the harder left, but once you start going down that path, once you start courting the likes of Murdoch, you've take a sip from the cup that is actively poisoning us all.
When you build a platform that has a foundation of broken promises, it's not the best start.
However, politics is brutal - if you are no good at playing the games, you won't last.
From every side and at every turn, there's people waiting to put a knife in.
It has ever been thus. Get the knife in first or disarm the knife carrier.
Reality bites.
Time will tell how Labour do - and right now, they are very much relying on the British public shrugging in pain and collectively agreeing, "They can't do much worse!"
What a way to gain power! 😉
I disagree, looking at the current con state they will do anything to stay in power. They have already copied childcare and NHS policy ( in name only ) without saying where the money coming from and as per usual media would never challenge them on that!
