For regular triangulation if you were working out a point on a piece of paper, you would need 3 references like you say. However, converting this 2D logic to the 3D world, you require a fourth signal to account for the extra dimension.

SATTELITES ARE JUST PLAIN CELL TOWERS AND IRS PROVIDES NAVIGATION WHEN THERE ARE NO AVAILABLE CELL TOWER SIGNALS. THERE ARE NO SATELLITES UP THERE
