How about this, imagine that the words in the brackets are the soft voices you scream inside your head as you sing a happy birthday song to your baby “ Two months raise head and coo ( smile!) Four months roll over and laugh ( focus on the sound baby) Six months sits and babble ( oh starring at the strangers?!) The 9 months crawl mama dadaaaa ( hope you respond when I call you back) 12 months 1+ words… walkinggggg!!!!… ( Baby I like the way you responding to my song) 😅😂
I remember my pediatric attending telling me the motor milestones go from head to feet, 2 months to 12 months. 2 months: good head movement (lifts head but can't roll over) 4 months: good chest and trunk movement (rolls over but can't sit up) 6 months: good hip movement (sits up but can't crawl) 9 months: good upper leg movement (crawls but doesn't walk) 12 months: good knee and feet movement (can walk but fine motor for feet still developing)
For social milestones I remember it with the mnemonic SNaRe - In order for it to work, recall that social milestones start with "S" until Six months 2 months: S - S(m)ile 4 months: S - S(o)und 6 months: S - S(t)ranger Anxiety 9 months: Na - Name 12 months: Re - Responds (to commands) You'll know if its right if you read it backward it should say "he RESPONDS to the NAME TOM"
Fine motor * 2 mo: Two eyes Track objects, notice Two hands * 4 mo: Follow with eyes * 6 mo: Shake a rattle * 9 mo: pincer grasp (ASL for 9) * 12 mo (1y): Throw things, Turn ONE page, use ONE finger to point
Just wanted to comment that I watched this video the night before my Step exam, and I had 1 question on developmental milestones and this video got me the correct answer which I wouldn't have gotten without it. Bless up Dirty Medicine
Thank you so much! This is super helpful. A great mnemonic for social could be “SSSRR” Smile, Sound, Stranger anxiety, Responds to Name, Responds to told commands
I sung the developmental milestones to an attending on my family medicine rotation this past month after having learned it here 6 months prior. You are AWESOME!
Thank you for all of your help! For gross motor skills, what about: 2: Top (head raise) 4: Flip (over) 6: Sits (up) 9: Ninja (crawl) One year: On the run To continue with the first letter of the number and action matching?
I cant believe I've been struggling with developmental milestones during my entire nclex study sessions and you just helped me learn them in under 5 minutes lolololol THANK YOU SO MUCH, this was everything i needed!!!!!
Dirty Medicine, thanks for your videos! They’re of unbelievably quality! May I ask if you could consider making a video about the rest of mood disorders (the different types of depressions)? Sorry for making a request without being a member; hopefully in the near future I will become one.
comlex on wednesday and step 1 (hopefully) the week after that. Seriously cant thank you enough for some of these videos. I feel like these are helping improve my practice tests scores with the subjects im weakest in!
Great way to explain this pediatrics milestones. Greetings from Mexico, thanks a lot; it will be because of you I'll remember this topic pretty well. Thanks again. Keep up!
fine motor skills - look at an XBOX controller - go from right side = circle - can draw circle at 3 years; X bottom - can draw X at 4; left button - square - can draw a square at 5 --> 3,4,5 - circle X square
OMG that video hands down my favorite when I took step1/level1. I came back to Dirty Medicine for all subsequent test and I'm sad its not up any more lol.
Yes. Music is easy for us to remember. This is why you can remember your favorite songs word-for-word. Also you can play my debut album at parties and impress all your friends.
Just taught you developmental milestones in 3 minutes. BOOM

Problem is often times you have to learn what happens at 24 months, 36 months, 3 years, 4, years, 5 years too.
I sung the developmental milestones to an attending on my family medicine rotation this past month after having learned it here 6 months prior. You are AWESOME!

Ooo that’s good!
As someone who's been dancing since forever, I remember steps better I literally choreograph that part 👀
2 year olds run on 2 legs
3 year olds play with 3 friends
5 year olds say more than 5 words
Thats hella useful! I have been banging my head to remember these basics! Thanks Dr Dirty!
