  • The landscape in Columbus, Ohio, has changed considerably since it was officially chartered as a city back in 1834.
Explore some of those changes; including a tour of projects created through the Works Progress Administration (WPA), an agency started out of the Great Depression; a visit to parking sites that once held important structures; and a look at highways around town that used to be trails.
    In this video:
WPA Projects in Columbus During the Great Depression of the 1930s, the government created the Works Progress Administration (WPA) to get millions of jobless people back to work. The WPA was a New Deal agency that not only gave people jobs, but also built-up public infrastructure around the country.
Architectural historian Darbee explores a few of these sites around Columbus with historian Doreen Uhas Sauer to learn more. Before They Were Parking Lots Preservationists Nancy Recchie and Randy Black visit downtown Columbus parking lots and share the history of buildings that once stood there, along with a conversation about past and present historic preservation and urban development.
    Trails Before Highways
Curious Cbus answers a viewer’s question on whether old Native American trails and wagon trails were the source of the highways we have in Ohio.

These are nice presentations of Columbus' history. I noticed glossing over of the building loss. As I was told, the struggle to preserve the pre-Civil war home was contentious between the owner and the district? As for the Main Street bar demolition and the nearby preservation if a similiar building came down to developer, site value, and "Is the old building pretty?" The bar sat on a block bordering S. High Street (higher value) where's the nearby building faces a lesser street, Main, though the same block per streets but divided by an alley. I'm open to a different interpretation.

21:55 What is this red tower in the parking lot at Spring & 3rd? Google Maps and Street View don't reveal anything aside from parking lot designations.

think 'oveerbuilt' residential real estate prices are way off-board (tell it to mom and dad's second child now living there with her new job). anyway, they decided somewhere to dump boatloads of cashola here always.

Did they start in Schiller Park, south of downtown, and "go south" to OSU, as she said? Uh....OSU would be north.
