The JA-37 Viggen uses a gun with the same ammo as the A-10 Thunderbolt II the Oerlikon KCA. Compared to the common 30mm Aden's this gun has a much higher muzzle velocity. IRL the JA-37C was the first aircraft to get the AMRAAM outside the US, the RB74 wing pylons also had flare dispensers.

Ugh. Well, the GOOD news is that after about a week, the variety of planes in matches will be "back to normal" and a little more fun. At least half of the matches I did this morning were all "Sweden Vs F-4 Phantom IIs" , thankfully it'll pass.

The competition is strong but the jet is very capable even with the RB24 you still can get a kill or two if you do it right.

That was fast. :) It is actually five different planes - even though the first four are more similar (first generation Viggens). The other are the SF, SH and Sk (later AJSF, AJSH, Sk 37E), phot resse, maritime patrol/sea suirvaillance and school/trainer. In reality they were capable of Mach 2.1 at altitude and 1.2 on the deck. Atleast a new aircraft.. The War Thunder one is a bit weird.. No need to call it a C for the countermeasures.. Those were introduced what was (later) called a "C" (there were no As nor any Bs - just JA 37, JA 37C (those not made into Ds later), JA 37D and JA 37Di By the time this C was around, the airbrakes were no longer usable (not used much and the button in cockpit, the space was needed for other things iirc). It never really used RB 24s, just 24Js and from 1986 RB 74s (AIM-9Ls), so it should actually have those.. Which might be a balancing factor - BUT, the Russians got all aspect IR missiles, or so I was told, so WTF? The auto pilot also helped aim the cannon as well, even spreading the salvo with rudder input, otherwise it was "too effective".. You want a little shot gun effect.. And it was effective to about 2.5km.:! You could also chose between 22 or 11 shells per second. 11 mainly for practice to conserve ammo - but it should be possible here too. Still, to this day, the most powerful cannon ever put into a fighter.. Yeah, the grey. :) The Gripens actually have a different grey tone on both the greys. The JA 37s and J 35js had one type and the AJSF 37s in SWAFRAP (Swedish Air Force Rapid Reaction thing) and JAS 39s have another grey colour..

People keep going on about how great the RB71s are but for the life of me I cannot get these things to work ingame. Outside of full headons they just simply do not seem to work. You can't lock someone from behind or the side it seems
4:50, because this beauty, have similar shells like 30mm gattling in A-10, this is beast, thats why, u can kill most modern jets in game with 1-3 shoots.
Kind of hoping they add the JAS 39 Gripen eventually, although implementing all features of said plane might take a while and I assume a lot of it is confidential
*Quick point on the Viggen acquiring the blackbird. The Blackbird is not a dedicated stealth aircraft, it's been radar locked plenty of times by both Viggens and American aircraft. The ISSUE comes from actually maintaining that lock for an extended period of time, and actually reaching out and touching it with your AAMs/SAMs.
Lock isn't that hard as you say, difference is that ground control tracking the SR-71 directed the Viggens into a heads-on parable with the pilots doing the final adjustments to get a firing solution for the lock, that would have allowed the missiles to make contact. This is why the USAF sent the diploma.
I recently acquired the Viggen, it is one of my first jet fighters. However, I'm still having trouble getting good gameplay with it. I still don't have much experience with this type of aircraft.
I've been having problems with the Viggen's thrust reverse. For me it randomly shuts itself off when trying to use it and I'm really not sure what's going on other than maybe it doesn't like using B to brake while also using the thrust reverse? Although it's done it even when I'm not trying to brake and use thrust reversal at the same time, the bug has been happening to my friend as well on the Viggen, but on the SK60B it functions normally
Hey, ive got 1 question, in the Dev Server the J37 had a system where when u radar locked someone, you had a circle where u have to shoot with your gun. Is this not in the game anymore?
I have a weird bug where my thrust reverser dosent work pretty much at all even though it says “thrust reversal on” not sure what to do (I’m on console)
You have to have your wheels in the ground now to start using reverse thrust. If you’re already doing that, then I’m not sure what could be causing you issues.
None of this is right though. The radar is a copy and paste of the F4E with a PD mode added on, and the Skyflash is a copy and paste of the AIM7E2, of which other nations all carry more.
doesnt matter, at the deck it is fast enough and in a battle you never reach your theoretical top speed with any jet. God it takes you like 20min to reach it anyways, so who cares.

GREAT question - "Air Combat Maneuvering" mode, also known as "boresight mode" - the radar stops sweeping the dish and just points it directly forward and tries to lock up whatever is in the center of it's view. When I next update my video about radar systems I'll go into more detail about ACM, and slaving IR missiles, since more sets can do that now.

As a more useful answer to your question - yes, my playstyle will be to use the guns then rocket pods to grind out ground targets for the first few upgrades.
Awesome plane however the phantom still reigns supreme especially in teamwork scenario I've slapped that thing a lot it's my favorite target at the moment however this is probably due to inexperienced wallet warrior s unlocking it super quickly one on one the with a less good phantom pilot your target is dead meat
Well something like this unfortunatly doesn't work if you are thrown into a match with strangers and i hate the phantom for that. I have less problems in my F-104s at toptier(well i had, but since there are now all of these pd planes, it is quite tough), because in it i don't have to rely on anyone helping me, since i have atleast the option to run. In the F-4EJ I have a positive kd (~1.5/d) but i never got used to it and you feel so helpless when anything like a Mig 21 bis or well a viggen is on your ass and the aim 7es aren't so useful because almost everyone has rwr and flares or even better radar than you. You get 4 Aim 7s yes, but how useful are these, when 90% of people can just deflect them with chaffs? The viggen on the otherhand has better radar and better missiles against which chaffs are just semi useful, even tho being it 2 less. In addition to that though it also more speed and manouverability on the deck and as he said in the video it "defines the meta" and i'm sorry, but in my view this usually means op(atleast against normal phantoms or the EJ. EJ kai and FGR 1/2 could beat it very well with their radar and good missiles).
This is the plane that will finally make me quit War Thunder (praise Jehovah). The Swedish tech tree requires you to research every single vehicle before this to get it and so there is zero reason to actually play this once I get it since all that RP just goes into a black hole. Oddly enough there is a ton of planes missing from the tree that are already in the game like the J 34, J 33 & J 30. I guess adding those would have messed with the business plan somehow.
That's a topic worthy of discussion - "what do I do once I have the tech tree fully unlocked for this nation?" , which is especially relevant for France and Sweden.

The SR-71 had lowered signature, but the challenge is that it flies really fast and at the same time also very high up. This allows it to outrun most missiles. Soviet Union downed the U-2 when they got tired of it flying over their territory, they never hit a SR-71. Getting a radar lock with firing solution means that if a missile had been fired, the most likely result would been a splashed Blackbird. Many have tried to place an aircraft of theirs in that position. One country actually did.

The viggen also had an excellent gun autopilot that would control pitch and yaw to lay the gun on a target. It was very accurate.

I've hit 1470kmh on the deck in straight line making vigen the fastest jet in the game on the deck
I hit the same speed in the MiG-23M, but the plane ripped right after passing that speed.
Viggen goes 1536 before ripping, mig23s 1470 and now f14 1570

Its radar is supposed to be good, but in game it acts pretty dumb sometimes. Hope Gaijin can fix it. And the fuel and bullet explosion problem.

2 or 3 people in Phantoms on voice chat can almost always totally dominate an Air RB match, I suspect it'll stay that way for a while.

the speed is unrealistic and it should easily hit mach 2.2
Viggen can't reach mach 2 under normal conditions.

no, JA-37 wasn't the only capable of locking on SR-71. Viggen just had an occassion of testing her systems while escorting the Blackbird.

Viggens did escort a SR-71 with engine failure over the Baltic Sea, but that's not how the radar lock was achieved.

The SR-71 had lowered signature, but the challenge is that it flies really fast and at the same time also very high up. This allows it to outrun most missiles. Soviet Union downed the U-2 when they got tired of it flying over their territory, they never hit a SR-71.
Getting a radar lock with firing solution means that if a missile had been fired, the most likely result would been a splashed Blackbird. Many have tried to place an aircraft of theirs in that position.
