- How does rebar make structural reinforced concrete stronger?
Ive always known that rebar "makes concrete stronger" but I never took the time to figure out exactly what its doing in there to accomplish that!
In this video, I explain how concrete can withstand enormous compressive forces, but is relatively weak under tension and sheer forces. Rebar, on the other hand can withstand tension very well - when combined, they make a perfect combination! The concrete is able to transfer all of the sheer and tension forces into the rebar that is embedded into it.

You know, there’s an example I use a lot for synergy, how a team can lead to more. But it applies to this, one of the strongest natural materials in the animal world is the Toucan’s beak, and unlike a horse shoe crab’s body armor which gains strength from structural piecing togetherness, a toucan’s beak gains the extra strength from complimenting of the different underlying materials …
The inside part of the beak is similar to styrofoam, and the outside part is similar to a thin plastic like the old drinking straws… but together it makes the whole product very strong.
It’s more of a math and science designation, that’s why you won’t always see this as much in engineering , but you will see it a lot more in business and system architecture.. because it’s fundamentally gaining its quantitative values through “game theory”
While concrete can support large loads of pressure in a downward direction, it is comparably weak with side to side, or if it has nothing under it to support it. (think of a beam on top of two pillars). Rebar acts like a bone within the concrete to overcome these weakness'.
That iPad is very brave.
