- All aboard! Let's take a look at Amtrak trains along the Hudson River! Travel to the state of New York as we see the many trains that are part of Amtrak's Empire Service. Amtrak owns a fleet of 18 P32ACDM locomotives used specifically on this corridor. The P32s are able to run off the on board diesel motor or pick electricity up from third rails, a requirement for running in and out of Penn Station in New York City. On most trains continuing past Albany, locomotives are switched out for a standard diesel-electric locomotive. Let's explore the scenic sights of Amtrak in the Hudson River Valley!

i love this! i live about 12 minutes from the hudson river, as i live in Valatie! my bus passes the hudson, following route 9 to my school.
Use to ride up the Hudson on Amtrak. Nice scenery especially in the fall and winter.

One thing you'll likely notice with these locomotives is how different they sound from P42s. That's because these locomotives are equipped with 7FDL12s vs. 7FDL16s on the P42DC, and the prime mover is locked to 1047 rpm. The P42DC only goes to 900 rpm.

Man I rid on Amtrak trains before and they were really cool when I was on an overnight train I play my ukulele in the sleeper car get noticed by the other passengers in the same car the train

I literally have just one word for this.....AWESOME!!!! This is literally the best video I've ever seen representing my hometown line and the Amtrak's I see all the time. I hope you do come to the East Coast again, especially the Hudson to railfan again.

I did not know that Amtrak still had locomotives painted in phase 3. That painting scene was very iconic back when Amtrak was using it and it was a much better painting scene than one that Amtrak is using now.
Before this, they were in original Phase 5 paint, and they were then repainted into Phase III, which honestly was a pretty nice breath of fresh air for New York

Another awesome video man!!!! I like that meet up with Metro North at 0:37 and the great and beautiful shots by the rivers and trees!!!! I see a lot of the P32-ACDMs have the heritage unit paint schemes and great horns/horn shows and there's a pretty good reason why Amtrak is America's National Passenger Corporation as they serve millions of people all over the United States from the east coast to the west coast!!!! Also I know I've said this before but are you still keeping the episode of Train Talk on the General Electric Genesis locomotives in mind?.....But once again great video!!!! :) +CoasterFan2105

I doubt that the SC-44 or any other new locomotive will replace the those P32s any time soon.
There was actually talk of the SC-44s getting a waiver because they have such low emissions. Have not heard any more on that though.

Great catches and meets. I don’t really like that Amtrak is using the Phase III scheme on the P32s. It looks cool, but I think that scheme should be used exclusively for heritage units. Also, what’s going on with your website? Every time I try to get on it, it says it’s unavailable. But anyway, keep up the good work!

Now that I post the upload schedule right on the channel, the only purpose it really served was for the contact forum. So let's say you record a train video on any day of the week besides Friday, do you record them and then upload them on Friday?

Thanks! It depends on the video. Since many of my videos require multiple days of filming and I sometimes film things for multiple different videos in the same week, many of them are edited and scheduled in advance. I also try to have as much variety in the schedule as I can, so for example, if I film enough for 4 Amtrak videos in 1 week, I won't upload 4 Amtrak videos back to back. I'll spread them out. In the case of this video, it was filmed on just one day in May of 2017. Since I didn't want a whole bunch of east coast videos coming out all at once, I've been trying to space them out, about one every month. If there is something that is a "current event", like the Charger test train video or the Big Boy move from a few years ago, I will change the schedule to have that video come out as soon as possible.

Lol i keep mistaking a P32ACDM as an P42DC
I am surprised that Amtrak has a separate locomotive for this route, the p32acdm while other Amtrak routes use the p42dc. They should have a universal locomotive for all Amtrak routes. One that is suitable for all Amtrak routes.
The P32 is a dual mode locomotive which means it can go in both diesel and electric mode. In NY Penn station and Grand Central diesel is restricted, they have to run on third rail. Metro north also has P32s. If it was not restricted normal P42s would run here and the p32 would never exist
what's the speed limit up these tracks from ny penn to albany ?
By the way, why are some of these newer P32AC-DMs in the Phase 3 paint but are not counted as HeritageUnits
I have heard that this is a special scheme that was requested by the state of New York. All of the P32s are supposed to be repainted in this scheme eventually.
These aren't heritage units because they have Empire Service branding.

There's alot more Phase 3 units than I thought.
Probably close to 10 of them now. All 18 P32ACDMs will eventually be repainted into that scheme.
Each unit is being repainted as they all cycle through Beech Grove for rebuilds.
