Saves me a lot of time at weddings. Also great for video mode so that autofocus doesn’t jump onto a guest’s face when shooting the ceremony and the bride moves or turns her head. In my canon days I would switch to manual focus.
Hi Gary, I have a A7ii I am having a bit of a struggle with the face recognition. I believe it is my settings. Does camera need to be in Wide Focus area and AF-C to properly work? thank you for the videos
If using back button focus, do you need to hold the AEL button the entire time (green), or once it goes green once, you can let go and click the shutter at any time (even if people move)?
If the subject does NOT move, then you do not need to hold focus down. But, if they are moving, then you will need to refocus or use the continuous focus feature.
So if I'm thinking this right; Green = focusing on face Gray = focused on face Purple = other registered faces Are there any advantages with this feature for just a one person shoot?
I tried with Sony A7C, i enabling face priority ON But i still doesn't get expected result. The icon doesn't have crown as you're showing and the pink frame also not showing up.
Looking at the detection area box would that mean that if the subject wore a hat (ball cap) would that throw the algorithm off or does it cut down to just above the eyes ... this is a very much wondered topic lately , what with the GH5 Gh5s and the Sony alpha's fighting for first dibs in the 2g price range . Follow focus adaptors are in vogue but darn clumsy . Your views would be very welcome. Stu.
Can you switch between the faces? So if you press the af-face-recognition button again, the camera would focus on the second person in the order and if you press it again on the third person?
If you have a group of registered faces, you have to prioritize the list of profiles that are stored in the camera from 1-10. To my knowledge you cannot cycle through the faces within a frame while you're composing a shot.
thanks! And if you place the flexible spot over a person whos less prioritized and press then the eye af, would it be focusing on that person or on the higher prioritized person?
Focus depends on your lens, the aperture you're using, and the difference in focus plane of your subjects. Your camera can only achieve critical focus at one exact distance, so you'll need to make sure the bride and groom are on that same plane if you want them both tack sharp, or use a small enough aperture to allow for enough depth of field to keep an acceptable focus between the two.
when taking a group shot with friends & family on rx100m4, is it better not to use Face Registration focus? I would like to have all the faces in focus, not just selected few. Is it correct to press assigned Eye focus (center button), focus the group, then shutter? big fan of urs, thx Gary!
Is there a way to use existing photo to register? Well, I found photos of my family members, displayed them on the computer screen, pointed the camera at face and got it to register it. We will see if it will recognize it while doing a real shoot. How would I know that the camera has recognized particular face? Does it put the number around the square box?
"If the groom and the maid of honor are in the shot, there's some explaining to do." Lmao.
lmao

Gary that is a brilliant Demo, such a brilliant feature
I can see this creating conflict over who is the favourite child ;P
Can you dynamically select which face to focus on regardless of the priority?
Thank you Gary great instruction.
please. Does this feature works for filming or only for pictures?
Thanks for demonstrating this! I must use this
Well explained sir.. thank u
Nice demo can you put all the faces to #1. if so what happens. cant wait to get the sony 6000. thanks

This was very helpful, thank you
Now that is about as slick as it gets. All hail Sony.
Thanks a lot, it helps me so much as I am a new Sony's user. Chris from France
So if I'm thinking this right;
Green = focusing on face
Gray = focused on face
Purple = other registered faces

What type of sorcery is this! This is 🔥
Right?!?!
does this work good with Video mode or just stills
“If the groom and the made of honor are in the shot, there is some explaining to do”😅😅😅😅😅😅😅
great presentation of projected auto focus
great gary👍

Does this work on the A7sII or A7rII in Video Mode?
does this feature available for video? anyway awesome tutorial
thanks Gary.
Is this working for Manual Lens?
Can you use eye auto focus with face registration?
I believe it is one or the other, and can't be used at the same time.
great video and great sony is nailing thes features :)
Tnx for this. Very informative. Thumbs up :)
what is the box you are using in the area below the camera next to the tripod?
can you set eye focus on the a7mii.

this is really cool!!!
Is there a way to change focus from one face to other without face registration and without moving the camera?
You could use the flexible spot focus, and manually guide the focus point to another face.
Thanks Gary! I'll try that..
Cool demo. Hey Gary, do you know if the the Zeiss Batis 85mm lens works with the eye-focus feature?
+John Campbell If it's FE mount than it will work such as the Batis 85. Well except the Loxia (manual focus only).
Sony is great :)
does this face registration work for A7Sm2 when shooting in video mode?

I have the a7rii what mode would you use to shoot say a bride and groom at a ceremony, and you want them both in focus.

Does face registration is only in camera? does it send information to the server when you connect to wifi?
Only in-camera.
Is there face recognition on the Sony A6300?
Yes!
Is there any way to do this with a picture already taken aka how Google or Apple handles the face recognition on existing photos?
Not sure what you mean.

Yes found face recognition
