In terms of auctions, I just discovered these (thanks to an earlier video from Ralfy!).
What I do is, when the auction opens, I put a watch on absolutely everything I might be interested in. Then every couple of days, I go through my watchlist, and remove everything that has gone over my spending limit. On the last day, I do this every couple of hours.
By the last hour it leaves you knowing you are seeing on one page, everything you’re interested in, that’s still in your price bracket.

Hello Ralfy, it was refreshing to see you utter the words “Macallan” and your face light up. Yes, it was in reference to a Macallan 10 year old whisky from the 1992 timeframe, and yes, I have seen your review of it from a few years ago when you removed the seal in front of your viewers and opened the bottle - it was an honest, genuine, authentic review and very accurate. I am old enough to remember The Macallan of the 1990s when you could buy a 10 year old for under $20 in Ohio. It came in an innocuous simple box, and no one knew of it. And it was delicious (paxarette days). In 1997 I purchased a Macallan 25 year old Anniversary Malt (distilled in 1970 and bottled in 1996) and it came in a rough looking box nailed down on the sides and with rough looking leather straps. It set me back by exactly $300. Quite a massive sum of money for me in 1997 but I didn’t know that I was about to drink something truly amazing (I did, and for the last 25+ years I even saved the box and the bottle). Those days are gone. I get you Ralfy, there are plenty of value single malts (Edradour 10 straight from the cask, Balvenie 15 Sherry, Arran 18, Glenallachie 10/12/18, Glendronach 18, Glenfarclas 18/25, Glengoyne 10/12/15/18, all value priced Sherry monsters) but my heart still belongs to that sensation that I remember engrained in my memory and in my taste banks - of the Macallan 18 from the 1990s. Even today I search for that taste and smell. So Ralfy, I would love for you to get back to reviewing The Macallan. It remains my favorite single malt, after having tasted hundreds and hundreds of them. I would love to see you review a basic 2022 Macallan Sherry Oak 12 year old bottled at 75% abv from today and hear your honest opinion.

Sound and thoughtful advise Ralfy! Fortunately for me, the only other persons in my life who have an appreciation for whisk(e)y are my Brother in law and secondly my wife. I do listen to her thoughts and impressions when I purchase and taste a new bottle. With my Brother in law, we chat throughout the year about what we've tasted, what we like, dislike...etc, so its easy more or less depending on availability, to present a Christmas, New Years, Birthday gift without disappointment. As for what I'd like to receive, I throw out hints year round with the hopes that she's taking notes. ;-) Cheers Malt Mates!

You framed it in the context of whiskey, but really, that's some of the best general gift-giving (and gift-taking!) advice I've heard anywhere. I particularly liked "I hadn't thought about that" as a response -- a genuine statement that doesn't over-embellish. Brilliant.

Got a bottle for my 50th birthday ... from the people in my life that I care most about. Of course, it was an Invergordon (= scotch grain) Whisky. This was about 3 months ago. I haven't opened it yet, I know the price. I will find the occasion to open it, I will enjoy it - 1st because it is probably actually good, 2nd because I appreciate the thought as well as the expense that went into it, and 3rd because these people and their present do mean something to me! And I don't even have to act out my thankfulness.

An 12yo. Old Pultney 2006 Vintage with Integrity presentation! Quite nice and not so much more expensive than the regular 12yo.

My own strategy is to have great relations with my usual store and make sure my relatives know where I get my botles. Then when a relative wants to give me something, they can go to the store and mention me by name and then figure out what I would like. Easy, just by being nice to everyone everywhere. Cheers!

I'm 2 years into my whiskey journey ralfy so quite new to it all.
I started working my way through all the cheap ones such as grants and jamesons
This year I've upped the anti a bit and I'm at the stage of laphroig select and 10 and Lagavulin.
My next venture is the laphroig sherry Oak and will see where I go from there.
I'm just working my way through them on quite a limited budget.
    Progress is steady but progressing.

Wise words, Ralfy, and you've got me intrigued about your next book! You're spot on about the difficulty of buying a gift for someone who's on their whisky journey. My wife and family generously bung me a few quid for birthdays and Christmas so that I can choose for myself. I experienced how difficult buying for a whisky fan can be when I got my brother-in-law a bottle of Laphroaig 10 Year Old for his birthday this year - I try to get him one he's expressed a preference for and it used to be a favourite of his (he's into peat, unlike me), but he didn't seem too keen on it this time. I should have realised - having watched your reviews for so long, and from my own experience - that not only do our tastes change over the years, but whiskies aren't 100% consistent! Just one gift idea you didn't mention - and I realise it may seem a cop out - some online drinks retailers do gift vouchers. For example, Master of Malt do them and their vouchers earn 5% interest per year. Cheers for the malt moment!

Awhile back i had covid and lost my sense of taste and smell for a bit . Did the fried orange trick and got back to about 75 % capacity but have been unable to fully appreciate certain foods ( chicken madras ) and drinks ( coca cola , some beers and wine ) so indesperation recently i turned to whisky ( Cardhu - a starter and Ralfys recomendation of Arran 10 year old ) All of a sudden my taste buds are at full capacity ( i even get the hazelnut finish on the Arran ) . Is there anything else whisky can cure ?

I was impressed, I'd never had that one before. (It's funny) The reason she bought it was because of the way it was presented....just like the Tamdhu 15yr old in your last review.

This is all good advice, and it can be adapted to any kind of booze. I sometimes give gifts to wine drinkers. I have a reasonably good understanding of their preferences, so I will go off the beaten path a bit and find them something that they likely haven't encountered frequently but is similar in style to wines that they regularly enjoy.
For giving gifts to drinkers of malt whisky, the idea of choosing a different spirit or a related type of wine is a good one, depending on how much variety the recipient likes. Some people stick almost exclusively to Scotch whisky and drink very little else; straying too far from that style might not be a good idea, but maybe a single malt from somewhere outside of Scotland would be an option. India produces some good ones that are reasonably priced, and small upstart distilleries in the United States are experimenting with the style in interesting ways. If the intended recipient is someone like me who happily drinks almost any kind of spirit, wine, or beer and doesn't have a particular preferred type of booze, then gift-giving is an entirely different challenge. For the person who aggressively seeks out variety in all things, something truly weird and unique might be an appropriate gift.
Sherry is a great choice since many single malts spend time in Sherry casks. The Lustau line is high quality, readily available, and usually reasonably priced. I'm currently working my way through a bottle of a very nice Lustau oloroso, and I'm certainly enjoying it.

Since I am the whisky drinker among my friends, I am the one buying them whisky. It makes more sense this way, rather than them buying me.
Although I have to say, I can enjoy even bad whiskies, so I would be happy to receive anything. There is barely any whisky that I couldn't drink, if I am not paying for it, to be honest. There are some, but not a lot.

I get whisky gifts now and then and the best ones are when they have read a little and chosen something they think I may enjoy. Worst ones are the cheap blends and whiskies they have gotten recommended by their freinds which are not into whiky. Have recieved a few of those.

"Any whisky will do." That is why I was presented with Ballentine's Finest... The most feature- and tasteless dram I have had thus far. What is double sad, is that I know that the gifter just passed on the bottle received from a customer... Zero effort. Well, I use it for making a hot toddy when I'm not feeling all oak and iron bound. On the flip side, my better half, a complete non-drinker, gave me a bottle of Glen Moray the other day, having spent a considerable amount of time in the shop pondering. I also got a Glenfiddich 12 from her, so not bad either. Cheerio!

considering super markets and generic products: here in Vienna, the local supermarket of the main train station had yesterday 5 bottles of Springbank 10 (56 Euros), 4 bottles of Bladnoch 10 (54 Euros) and 6-8 bottles of Arran 10 (34 Euros). And many more non generic whiskies.

I gave an Aussie mate a Deanston 12 as a birthday gift...He is a 50 cent local beer and box wine kind of guy.
    I wish I had kept it...ha ha...
He did not even open it for months after his birthday..
    Give me some cash....
I just go and buy what I love or have been looking for from research...

last time my girlfriend tiped her brother, who wanted to give me a whisky as birthday present, which whisky id want. The glenlivet licensed dram, since its quite good, but was very cheap here. They visited a spirits retailer who had it in stock, showed the picture of the whisky. In the end i got the glenlivet 12, ofc i acted surprised and happy. My gf later told me, that the shop guy, was saying: i know just what you want/looking for, and sold them the glenlivet 12 with 2 glases, instead of what they showed him, the pic of the licensed dram bottle. The brother in law has no idea of whisky so i dont blame him, but guess where id never shop ever again... (and this is a "specialist shop")
