I heartily endorse the position that you knit what you are drawn to for your first sweater. When people ask what they should start with to learn I tell them to find something they like and start there - after all, it’s really just combinations of two stitches. If you like it, you are motivated- if you are bored, you are not!
It was a real pleasure to look at your projects. Apparently, we’ve got similar taste - I love the yarn (tweedy type) you choose, the colours in your colour work, the greens and purples are lovely. And I loved the abundance of projects knit by an experienced knitter - all these are a great source of inspiration. Thanks a lot
Your videos are great and I especially love the setting in your beautiful shop. It is a wonderful backdrop to your knitting, which is also inspiring and lovely. Such a good, well done podcast. Thank you and have a good week!
So many sweaters to knit! And you are the reason my list is getting longer! I think I just really like your taste. You are a great find for me. Thanks for doing these!
Super fun episode!! 🎉 I remember learning that legos came with instructions…… I felt the same way when I learned there were actual knitting patterns! 😂 so many funky wool gifts given. Good luck with that sombrero’ish woolley hat I knit it with love!
Really enjoyable podcast! Love to see your FOs and how much fun you had with each pattern and the choices you made! I've added quite a few sweaters to my queue!!!
Watching from Ontario Canada. A beautiful place. My son and live in Palmerston North. We usually fly into Auckland on our way to visit him and his family. A beautiful country
You output is amazing, Alana! I love how you squeeze a wealth of patterns and yarns into a smallish space, it invites me in. I love your shop and the support I get in our too.
Hi, I am watching from Switzerland and am excited to have found your channel. You are inspiring in all of your color combinations and pattern choices…I Just can`t wear wool against my skin and…I have never attempted a top down sweater. Maybe someday!
Hi Alana, I live in Southland NZ. I've bought lion brand wool ease at Spotlight in Invercargill. I have just checked and it's still there on there list of yarns. I too have found it wears well.
what a great review of some of your knits, so informative and I really like the level of detail you give and the way you deliver it. I may have added Lala sweater to my favourites. Your store looks beautiful, I have ordered online, but I would love to visit and shop in person some day.
Great to see your subscribers shoot up so quickly. Great Alana. Doing a catch up on your videos! Kind regards Lynn Albany Western Australia (knifton on Ravelry) PS: Interrupted 8 times by RUclips ads
While watching your podcast last week I realised that you are the designer of the wonderful Calypso sweater I knitted last year. As soon as it popped up on my feed (can't remember where ) I just had to knit it although I had only knit one (chunky) stranded knit before. The pattern was easy to follow and being worsted, was pretty quick to knit. I loved the colours used in yours, but could not justify using spincycle as I was a learner. I used malabrigo instead which looks ok, but I love the fade effect of the original, and now feel confident enough to invest for my next one! Unfortunately possum mix yarns are not available in the UK as far as I know. Thank you for your podcasts - I shall be watching each week!
Hi Helen, wow I'm so happy to hear you knit a Calypso! I think you're right that possum yarn really only comes from NZ... however there are so many beautiful yarns in the UK as well- and Malabrigo is such a lovely yarn! All the best in your knitting journey 😊
Wow, Alanna! You are so talented and your knits are gorgeous! Thank you for starting this podcast - I love your style and the shop looks so welcoming and cosy. I look forward to many more episodes and following your knitting journey. Cheers from Canada! ❤
Thank you for sharing your sweaters. This was, again, another cozy podcast that I really enjoyed. I look forward to the next episode of Thank you for Knitting 💜
I love your knits, definitely need to look into the Harley sweater! I'm knitting the Comfort Fade Cardi right now, but I don't do the striping - as I'm using hand dyed sock yarn held double, I can do a more consistent fade by only changing one of the 2 yarns at a time, and let the yarn do the rest. My fade is from turquoise to brown ☺
Greetings from Barcelona ❤Love your videos, I really appreciate their rhythm, the amount of details and tips you include still maintaining them so entertaining and enjoyable. Looking forward to the next episode 😊
Yay! I was so excited when I saw you had made a new podcast...I Love all your knits, particularly the Harley Sweater. The colours, patterns, silhouettes all look so well put together and different from one another. Im intrigued to investigate the Brushtail yarn, great to see some NZ yarns in the mix.Thank you Alana for this inspiring, engaging podcast.
Another super episode - thank you as it was a great distraction from the rain here in Dunedin. I too have a most magnificent collection of Gini yarn - fits in so well with my Bonnie yarn collection. Loved the wee snippets of yarn reviews and seeing the buttons. Calypso cardigan is one of my most worn garments - the lightness of the yarn and comfy design are fabulous. Looking forward to next weeks session already.
Great podcast again Alanna. Loved all your sweaters, and especially the Harley, Birkin & of course the Fade Cardi. Lots more added to my favorites to knit one day, so thank you.
Great episode! Loved seeing your favorite makes. I used to only knit squares and rectangles until I started hanging out at my LYS. It's a great place to be knitfluenced.
Hi gorgeous lady, It is so nice to have seen you twice this week - at knit group and here on screen! I'm very excited that you've started this podcast because you are so inspiring! I feel like we are very similar in a way that I've moved to NZ around the same time as you - 2017 and have done my first garment around the same time and this country has inspired me incredibly to learn more about fibre arts. And it's just incredible to see your journey - from the first time you've started the shop back when it was Sticth&Bitch and to the Shop that it is now. I'm very proud to call you my friend and consider myself lucky that I can just pop in the shop and have a chat with such a talented designer, yarn connoiseur and beautiful human being! Loved seeing all your garments, what a great pile of very wearable garments! Your first sweater looks incredibly cute! And of course the one you're wearing is stunning! Sending lots of warm hugs, Marina
Hi Marina my friend! You are way too sweet with this lovely comment- I definitely agree about out similarities. We will need to get together and do a video together at some point! I'm happy to have a friend like you too and always love watching your videos. See you again soon I'm sure! ♥
Hello from New England, USA! I'm really enjoying your podcast. I now want to knit every sweater you highlighted today. I'm also wishing I could get my hands on some of the New Zealand possum yarns. The Calypso sweater is beautiful. I think you might have to host a Calypso KAL in the near future. 😀
You have such beautiful sweaters ! Is the color work hard to learn? I have never used much wool yarn I grew up in Northern Utah which was cattle County and cattle farmers didn't get along with sheep farmers. 😕 I knit my first pair of socks in the fall of 2017 with superwash wool. That's the first time I've used wool. How do you care for wool sweaters? I have read a lot and it doesn't seem like they are washed a lot. Thanks Shawna
Thanks so much! I think colorwork isn't too hard- the main thing is keeping your "flaots" nice and loose... there are probably quite a few nice tutorial videos on youtube. In terms of sweater care I usually hand wash them in lukewarm water with some wool wash like the Eucalan one, then lay them flat to dry. Yes, when you have nice wool I find they only need to be washed a couple of times per year generally. Hope that helps!
Once again, great podcast. Really enjoy seeing all the NZ yarns you use, I’ve bought Wild Earth and been impressed and loved seeing the colour Hickory on screen, so much nicer than on the online shop. Would love you to show us more of their colours, also Prosper, Union Fibre and Happy Go Knitty as they are great options for me here in the Highland region of NSW
Beautiful work. it's so helpful to see the knits that people actually use and why they love them. It's fun to see all the brand new things just off the needles but did the yarn hold up? Where they a style and fit you like, did they fade or stretch? Do you still love the colors? I haven't been knitting long enough to have 73 sweaters done nor to have piles of garments that I love or hate so I find it so very helpful to see the things that others actually use and consider the factors that put those things in the awesome pile or the back of the closet never to be seen again pile. To me knitting means using the items I make and unless I build a whole building with an army of mannequins to display my work, I would rather just love to wear them myself so that means considering very carefully what I choose to make.
Thanks for mentioning Caitlin Hunter's Birkin jumper. I knitted it a few years ago and was so disappointed with the yoke and fit. I frogged it and didn't know that the pattern had been revised.
What a lovely podcast-so glad I found you! Your designs are exquisite and several are in my favorites. Would you please describe in detail ( or do a tutorial) on your method of making a double folded ribbed crew neck? I want to substitute one on a sweater I’m knitting which calls for a one by one rib. It would be greatly appreciated. 🥰
thank you so much! I will add it to my list to make a tutorial video for it- I do also explain it a bit in my patterns that use it, but sometimes a video is better. Essentially after knitting the rib twice as long as I will want the collar, on the final round I just knit the next round together with the stitches from the cast on edge... hopefully that makes sense!
@@blackcatknitco My current considerations include making a beanie for my niece in Leiden (Netherlands) at Uni - need to consider my very very long "to do " list with limited time :)
Moran, I've been thinking of you and your family for the last couple of days. I've been imagining you all in shelters. I was so happy to see you all at the airport. I cried. I only found your channel recently but I've gone back looking at your videos and I feel as though I know you. I hope you have a wonderful trip in the US. Prayers for Israel. Love from Central Victoria, Australia.
thanks so much! I essentially just knit together the cast on edge along with my final round at the end of the ribbing, so they're joined together. I'm not sure if that makes sense, but I can try to film a tutorial at some point!
Love the Harley. Just put it on my “to do” list. I am currently making a Sand Cardigan in the same green Wool Ease yarn you used on your Harley. I like the feel of this yarn ( and my wallet likes the price). 😀
Really enjoyed your podcast. Love the colorway of the sweater you are wearing and was fascinated by how different the other looked. Am curious if you are able to start with the double collar by folding it over at the end, or whether it must be left until the end and. (I am just beginning my first sweater)
Thank you! There are several different ways to do the folded collar, I personally like to do it as I go- I basically knit the rib to twice the length I want the collar to be, then on the final round I knit the next round together with the cast on edge to connect them. I hope that makes sense! I am planning to make a tutorial at some point since a few people have asked 😊
THank you! Generally, possum blend yarns are only produced in NZ. However the brand Zealana is sold in some places in the US, so I reckon if you search for "Zealana Yarns online usa" or something like that hopefully you will find a stockist 😊
Thanks so much! Sadly that cowl was knit with no pattern... I used a bulky weight fluffy alpaca yarn and I really just knit a pretty plain tube with a few rounds of ribbing at each edge. Sorry I don't have a pattern, but I hope that helps anyway!
I'm watching from Washington state but I grew up in southern California. Are you from there because you kind of have the same accent As I do and my sister And love you your podcast. Would you explain the possum yarn for us. I'm not sure it sounds very appetizing
I a originally from Wisconsin, but I also lived in upstate NY, Seattle and Montana so I think my accent is a bit of a mix. The possum in this yarn is from an Australian Brushtale Possum, so its totally different from an American "Opossum". It's a super nice fibre!
Hello from Cincinnati, Ohio (USA)! How in the honk would you get yarn from a possum? (Not really asking you to explain) Maybe your possums are furrier. The one the comes on my deck every night (eats the cat food) looks to have a short, bristled coat. And seems like he would definitely not allow anyone to touch him! I must research this! 🤯
Haha yes it sounds very strange to my North American friends! In this case it comes from an Australian Brushtail Possum which is a marsupial, so a totally different animal to the "opossum" 😅
Interesting. Have spent some time with knitters who knit a lot and are quite accomplished, but I always wonder why they almost never wear their own knitted stuff!
Ohhh sadly I had to give my Comfy Fade Cardy away - not the best fade (I was learning) and I have lifted many many weights since I knitted this and have much much larger shoulders!! I gifted it to a skinny friend to enjoy
I nave a pink sweater, of which I dislike the shade of pink. But the sweater is soooo nice it is my most worn sweater 😅 … so now I am making one in blue haha
I heartily endorse the position that you knit what you are drawn to for your first sweater. When people ask what they should start with to learn I tell them to find something they like and start there - after all, it’s really just combinations of two stitches. 73 knit garments in 7 years. I just can’t even imagine that. Great job.

Hooray! Good job B, such a hard worker 😊
Thank you for helping me ♥
Hi Alana, I live in Southland NZ.
I've bought lion brand wool ease at Spotlight in Invercargill. I have just checked and it's still there on there list of yarns. I too have found it wears well.
Hi, and thank you for mentioning that! I didn't realize you could get it here, but I will try to mention that soon so people know 😊
what a great review of some of your knits, so informative and I really like the level of detail you give and the way you deliver it. I may have added Lala sweater to my favourites. Your store looks beautiful, I have ordered online, but I would love to visit and shop in person some day.
Thank you so much Michelle! Can definitely recommend Lala 😊

Thank you so much Rachel! I also have quite a big stash of Bonnies yarn too- so beautiful ❤
Lion Brand has started to appear in Spotlight - I'm pretty sure I saw 'thick and quick" when I was in there last
Great podcast again Alanna. Loved all your sweaters, and especially the Harley, Birkin & of course the Fade Cardi. Lots more added to my favorites to knit one day, so thank you.

Oh dear, well that definitely happens! At least someone else was able to enjoy it 😊
Also it's a great thing to have strong arms! 🙌
Are you saying possum merino? Possum? I never heard of that - is it a NZ thing? Thanks!!!
Yes it's definitely an NZ thing! It's a Brushtail Possum which is a marsupial, it's a totally different animal than the American Opossum 😅
I nave a pink sweater, of which I dislike the shade of pink. But the sweater is soooo nice it is my most worn sweater 😅 … so now I am making one in blue haha
Why dont you overdye uour pink sweater?
@@anandaruss7694 I am scared it’ll turn out bad. I’ll just gift this one to my sister. I don’t mind knitting more 😊
That's what's so great about being a knitter! You can make another one exactly how you want 😊
