First generation recording, brand new tape, SVHS not VHS - to try and keep quality as high as possible. Recorded when first broadcast. Thanks for looking.
RIP David. Not awkward at all! Nice that most of the questions were directed to the Sales bros instead of Bowie. If this had happened in the states the host would have ignored the rest of the band entirely and asked Bowie a bunch of questions about his 1970's hits or personal life!
+Paula Williams Yeah, I don't see what that metro article was on about. Bowie didn't seem unwilling to speak, the interview looked like it went just fine.
+flyboy2196 The Metro article was on about Wogan's comments in his own autobiography, where he said he wanted to hit Bowie. It's Wogan who drew attention to this being a bad interview in the first place.
I have been a Bowie fan for many years, and all the time during his career right up until his death, he was re-inventing himself as an artist. Personally I saw nothing wrong in the interview. Wogan looked a bit lost when David was getting the other members to answer, a huge mark of respect in my eyes. He didn't wish to be the stand out member, just one of the four. Loved Tin Machine, unfortunately for them, the likes of Nirvana was doing the rounds, but great memories nonetheless.....
The problem is, how can Bowie not stand out in a group of unknowns. I thought the tin machine was a low point for Bowie.A stupid idea that was thankfully short lived.
@@opinionday0079 the Sales brothers worked with Iggy Pop and Gabrels is a legendary guitarist. This wasn't a stupid idea it was very bold and too short lived.
@@geoffreywillars1032 It really *_wasn't_* normal. Wogan even later claimed he came close to physically assaulting Bowie, a shocking claim I know, but that's what he said.
to be fair, I think if there WAS awkwardness, or anythin else, it was terry's fault he had absolutely no idea what he was doin up there, askin the same 2 questions over and over cmon terry, ye can do better than that
+Fiona Skywalker MY HEARTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT cannot believe one after the other we don't even have a chance to breathe to heal from the first one now this new tearsssssssssssssssssssss
+*SUPERSTAR LEGEND TRIBUTES* It's hard to comprehend that we've lost so many greats already in 2016. One month and a new year which started with the death of Natalie Cole, and it's been downhill since.
I don't know why the papers have to make a big thing out of this. It wasn't so bad, just banter and this happens most if the time at talk shows. Neither did Bowie look like he'd taken something. Why do they line to dig for news stories. Media are crass.
+jabah jabawoki More like why did Wogan have to make a big deal out of it in his autobiography. If he hadn't mentioned it, the papers wouldn't have brought it up and people would have forgotten about it.
Wogan was not of their generation I think he was a bit intimidated by them and tried to crack an awkward joke about Bowie been any good but it all went pear shaped after that as they all kind of just took the piss out of him and Wogan felt it and gave a few smart answers back lots of egos all round !
+Paul London Unfortunately it was a choice between Gloria Hunniford and Michael Aspel back then. So not much of a choice, all bland and middle-of-the-road shows. You can see why Jonathan Ross had to come along and shake things up.
THIS was the interview that offended Wogan so much he wanted to start a fistfight? Really? Was there some subtle British insult going on here that I'm culturally clueless about? Because it just looks like a completely ordinary interview to me. Was Wogan annoyed that Bowie kept deferring to the other band members instead of answering all the questions himself, maybe?
David wanted to be interviewed as though he was just a member of the band. He wanted each member to be given equal time etc in interviews. Hardly realistic - Gabrels was a highly respected musician but had not been in a successful band and whilst the Sayles bros were legends they aren't famous with the public at large. If one of the band members is Elvis it's pretty likely he'll get all the attention.
Both left us very suddenly no warning and within a few weeks of each other. I was a massive Bowie fan and loved Wogan equally. Very sad times right now.
awkward because Wogan asking to in a tedious way why and how...when they are just here to enjoy the moment doing something different having fun and not take themselves too seriously
Wogan’s subsequent comments: "David Bowie, well, he probably wasn't at his best when I interviewed him [...] I thought a solid slap would have helped the situation. I didn't hit him, of course, but it came close."
yeah same as me, wogan is on record as saying bowie never knew how close he came to getting a slap on live tv, i don't know what all the fuss was about, watching this it didn't seem nearly that bad to me.
Bowie must have hated going on this show. He hated playing to mainstream audiences and Phil Collins fans, and Wogan was as mainstream and Phil Collinsy as TV got.
+jonsa75 Let's Dance made money too, and he hated playing to stadium audiences full of Phil Collins fans. He said so in an interview with Jonathan Ross. Making money isn't everything to a true artist.
He still went on it though didn't he, Wogans class and so is Bowie but Terry was the professional here and Bowie was off his head on what looks like a nice bit of Coke he is enjoying. By the way ain't nothing wrong with Phil Collins pal much respected across the music industry I think you'll find.
+Jenny I think Bowie and Wogan were a difficult mix, especially as Bowie was trying to get away from his "showbiz" persona at this point. There's an interview with Wogan where he said he wanted to hit Bowie during an interview, presumably this one www.independent.ie/world-news/i-nearly-hit-bowie-confesses-wogan-26112735.html
+lala lulu Phil Collins is respected as a drummer, nowhere near as much as singer and songwriter. There's a reason Bowie dismissed his '80s era as his "Phil Collins years" pal!
This is the famed interview referenced on buzzcocks?! My bowie has been so much worse with interviews, honestly i think terry was just being plain awkward...
These thumbnails are misleading, This was a warm, anything goes interview that terry loved but he was always pushed for time & never seamed to mind mistakes or moments of "awkwardness" , the joy of live TV. Tin Machine was a sticking point in bowies career with experts saying "some day you,ll get it,."
I think the guy in the glasses was a bit worse than David. Still loads of smugness floating about though. Love how Terry accidentally flipped off the camera at the end there.
I was under the impression that this interview was awkward but it’s not really awkward at all apart from wogan struggling to come up with some interesting questions. Bowie I think was just trying to be amusing without much success, but the rest of the band came over well
I'd love to know the whole story here - the interview was definitely uncomfortable but not to the extent Wogan would want to hit Bowie. There must have been some backstage exchanges to make Wogan make such a claim because, apart from anything else, Bowie would have decked him.
Bowie's "mate of ours from Dublin" comment seemed to rub Wogan up the wrong way, Wogan's voice changes like he's not sure if Bowie's taking the p*ss or if it's a fact. Wogan who liked to be seen as a pillar of the British Establishment seemed to take offense at the mention of Dublin and with the emerald green suit Bowie was wearing might have felt in a weird but calculated way he was being mocked by one of Britain's biggest music icons.
Questions were a bit fuzzy and he doesn't actually speak to Bowie initially so its untidy rather than awkward. Always think post music interviews, even on Graham Norton, feel a bit shoehorned in, rushed and ad hoc.
Super awkward. "What ARE you trying to do?" David just laughs in disbelief... I mean, seriously? Not that I'm a huge Tin Machine fan, but what does it look and sound like to you, mate..? It wen't really well this one, didn't it...
I don't think that was awkward at all, just daft all standing there, but Bowie seemed like he was just having a laugh like he would do with anybody else.
Bowie and Wogan were sparring . Bowie it one stage is caught off guard , but then comes back with the quip that leads to the movement response and getting knocked down . They conceded a score draw (not something Bowie was expecting ;-) ) by the smiles at the end.
This is really funny. I wish Terry Wogan had decked him, I'm sure Bowie would have seen the funny side. After all, it wouldn't have been the first time he was on the wrong side of a punch, and probably not the last either.
dont see any awkwardness, ok wogan not the best interviewer, but he was pleasent enough and the guys in the band might of been a little jokey but not in anyway disrespectful. Just not a very interesting interview thats all
Bowie and gang were displeased they had to basically lip-synch on air during their performance, so they took to dicking with Wogan after pretending to play. Can't really blame them, honestly.
..."you gonna find lots of stuff on the road.." Bowie: "Lots of movement on the road" *smilie* The others: *confused* Me: *breaking down while laughing* XD
I think you'll find he actually said "a lot of *movements* on the road" (i.e. bowel movements XD). Terry got it, wasn't impressed and retorted with the old 'if you stay in the middle of the road, you'll get run over" line!
Bowie acting sarcastic here towards the host of the show who was helping them promote the band he could have acted with a bit more grace instead of answering his questions with smart ass answers trying to make Wogan feel stupid but Terry’s a pro he took it on the chin and flipped him the bird at the end !
These comments cannot be argued against: "Wogan is an arsehole." "Wogan is a complete prick... What a cunt." Wogan "had absolutely no idea what he was doing..." "Bad interview and really uninteresting questions." Wogan was "just being plain awkward."
+drmanny1957 They were on his show plugging their album he's a talk show host not a music critique , Wogan got a lot further than most in his trade which was the very top.

awkward because Wogan asking to in a tedious way why and how...when they are just here to enjoy the moment doing something different having fun and not take themselves too seriously
Oh I think they took themselves quite seriously and there was a lot more to it than just getting together for some fun.
Wogan’s subsequent comments: "David Bowie, well, he probably wasn't at his best when I interviewed him [...] I thought a solid slap would have helped the situation. I didn't hit him, of course, but it came close."
I honestly thought you were kidding with that post until I looked it up. I think Bowie would have flattened him if he had.

Bowie has so much class, ends the mess on an up note.
And now Terry Wogan has gone!
Terry totally outclasses Bowie. They look like four schoolboys talking to their head master 😆
Nearly punching a person for a slightly awkward interview. Sooo classy...
