    Great video. Very informative. As a long time diesel owner and living in the northern area of the northeast, I would also like to add idling to the list. Leave the old iron turning if your only getting out for 20 minutes or less. They cool off very fast in freezing weather and you burn way more fuel trying to warm them back up. I use a turbo timer that allows the truck to run without the key in it for up to one hour. If someone breaks in the second they step on the brake to engage the shift interlock, the engine shuts down.

    Living and working in Calgary, I don't change my oil for winter. I run royal purple 15-40 year round. When I go to SK to visit my inlaws..I hope and pray I don't see -40. Lived and worked there for 30+ years and know how cold it can get. Seems to work for me, my 03 5.9 has 730 on it and still runs like a top. New truck is an 08 6.7. It's a princess, when we get a mind numbing -20 here in cowtown it sits in the driveway and I run a little V-6 gasser for work. I am now a huge believer in the additives. 6.7 was running like shit, so started adding $65/3.78l jug of CR injector cleaner. 6.7l running perfect again. Thanks for all the good tips. TOG out!!

    Living in Northern Minnesota where -20 -30 -40 -45 weather can last for weeks l filly agree with your video 100%. Clean filters, good batteries, winter diesel with additives, I use Lucas fuel treatment year round, thinner synthetic oil, plugging in your truck and letting it warm up before taking off. I carry my generator in the back of my truck, and at work I'll go out and rip that over at last brake and plug into it. Or at least fire up your truck at lunch and let it run 20-30 min. I've just recently moved to the weekend shift so with the permission of my company owner he let's me pull around back and plug in on company power witch it super nice.

      Pro tip: a small generator is sending most of the fuel's heat straight out the exhaust. Point that exhaust outlet at your oil pan while the generator is running if you can do it safely. Or better yet, get the Webasto.

    Good information. Regarding diesels in the winter, I use Howe’s anti-gel in the winter with Lucas’s Upper Cylinder Lubricator Injector Cleaner at 3oz. additive (each) to 10 gallons of fuel. The Lucas is used year round.
    This has been my diesel fuel management system for decades. I live in Idaho with cold winters, and this always makes all my Dodge Cummins pickup trucks start and run great all year long. Not to mention, this setup helps extend my truck’s injector life.
    Turbo blankets are another good idea I use to help with faster turbo spooling, lower EGT’s when towing (in the summer), and increase HP up to 50 when checked on the dyno.
    Changing the engine oil to a Full Synthetic (5W-40) is a great idea, but I would recommend it year round. I prefer the Valvoline since Cummins recommends it, and because it is a CK-4 rated oil made for Cummins specifications.
    Definitely agree with you on the engine block heater. Cummins recommends using the block heater when the weather drops below 25 degrees F which is the same time I start using Howe’s Anti-gel.

    We run 5w40 synthetic year round in our diesels. The engine runs quieter and smoother. My house is in the California gigh desert. The coldest it gets is 15°f. But I do travel to cooler places. In the 1980's, I lived in Colorado. The nighttime temperatures were -5°f. But had a few cold snaps that got down to -30 or so. Gasoline or diesel engines performed so much better with synthetics.
    When I drove over the road trucks back in the 90's. Just adding even 1qt of 5w40 synthetic. Would make a noticeable difference. On a 2200 mile trip, I saved over 7 gallons of fuel. Since I kept a personal notebook, I had the records to compare. The company gave me a fuel bonus. So that little bit of extra fuel economy, paid me a little more.

    I have a '19 Ram with the Cummins and so far where I am it has not been colder than about -15°C. I plug it in around -5°C but have it on a WIFI controlled outlet so it can automatically turn on a few hours before I need the truck and I can control it manually. 3 to 4 hours of block heater use is usually enough that the truck will start itself without running the grid heater preheat cycle (pushbutton start).
    Also it's been said not to leave the block heater on while your truck is heating up or is hot, it can cause premature failure of the heater element.

    1) The Cummins needs to work to generate heat, so it's a fine line between idling until it warms up and driving off. I drive slow and keep the rpm around 1200 for a few minutes, and avoid climbing steep hills. In no time the register blows warm air.
    2) Get AGM batteries. They are expensive but they pack a punch, don't lose cranking capacity as the temperature drops, and have better longevity. Costco sells a set for the Dodge Cummins at a good price.
    3) Battery blankets for conventional batteries: They use 80 watts per side, which is the same as an incandescent lightbulb. They get plugged in at the same time as the block heater.
    4) Synthetic oil year around. Even 15W40 Amsoil Heavy Duty and Marine stays remarkably thin at very low temperature. Instead of throwing it away, install a bypass filter that will keep soot particle over 2 microns from going back in the crankcase oil. Soot particles under 2 microns don't cause trouble, they just color the oil black.

If I idle for 5-10min with the RPM's above 1k to get at least up to 100deg coolant temp then drive easy, would that work also? From my understanding with long idle times, cylinder glazing seems to be the biggest/costly problem that comes from doing it.

I have driven a 2006 VW Jetta TDI and have noticed it stays cold until you drive it. I believe you should start the car, clean the snow off and start driving (as long as you can see, as in interior is not foggy). I find the GDI engines and TDI engines warm up faster under gentle load.

    I am a new diesel user. I have a 2004 Ford F-250 lariat super duty 6.0 and I love it, however it seems to be developing a issue when driving in the cold winter wind, I lose power, speed, and it shakes. What could the problem be?

    The easiest way is to pour in a few liters of kerosene, if it is summer diesel in the car.
    I know, I live in northern Sweden. About 20 km south of the Arctic Circle.

    I never had or driven a diesel vehicle in my life, and I just purchased a 2018 ram 2500. My question is how long would you say I can leave my truck parked in the garage before I may start having issues with my truck? Will the DEF be the biggest problem if I don’t drive my truck?

    • @konigstiger8518
      @konigstiger8518 2 года назад

      DEF usually goes bad after a year. And it's best to run it every once in a while.

    Good video man, I was under the impression idling isn’t great so I usually start my truck up psd 6.7, turn my monitor on and go. That being said I do live near a school so I usually just put in third for the first few minutes. Am I doing damage to my engine? I have run an oil analysis last summer, it came out good…I think I’ll do another one my next oil change

    Just subscribed great video! At 10:00 when you say warm up for 20 minutes should the truck be at a high idle?

    • @darkirondiesel
      @darkirondiesel  3 года назад

      High idle is better because it will warm the engine up faster, basically you just want the engine to be warm before you start driving hard. If you are high idling then 15 min would probably be enough time. It also depends how cold it is outside.

    Thanks for Videos! I'm new to owning a Diesel truck and find your vids very helpful! Question, I live in Alberta and have a 2017 Ram 2500, 6.7 Cummins, Noticed in the Video you recommend changing to Synthetic in the winter. I wanted to change over the Shell T6 5W40, any issues with running that all year long in the Truck? I'll check out the contest to I was looking at getting that CTS3 monitor anyway! Thanks!

    • @darkirondiesel
      @darkirondiesel  3 года назад +2

      Nope no issues with running it all year long. I run shell 5w40 all year long myself. Once the oil is warm is acts exactly the same as a 15w40. The only real difference is when it’s cold it flows better. Some guys just switch to 15w40 in the summer because usually it’s a bit cheaper but honestly just run that 5w40 year round and you’ll be good.

      Honestly bro run amsoil I have been running it since day 1 never had any issues i usually run the 5w40 in winter and 10w in the summer if your near calgary i got a guy who sells it out of his house for half of what you get it at the store roughly i pay around 220 with the filter

    Alot of people say never let your diesel sit running when you cold start it they say it will mess you engine up. Why do you say let it warm up?

  • @DavidBurgess-captainindustry
    @DavidBurgess-captainindustry Год назад +2

    Good video overall, but a couple of points need correcting. First, checking battery voltage can be an ok indicator of state of charge, but tells you nothing useful about the condition of the battery. Highly sulfated batteries or batteries with dead cells can show a normal voltage but won't provide the cranking amperage you need. At a minimum, use an electronic battery tester, or better yet, do a proper load test so you don't get disappointed trying to start your diesel on a cold day.
    Second problem here is the perpetuation of the myth that your diesel engine needs a long warm-up time. While it's true that you don't want to drive it hard before the oil is up to operating temperature, idling is not the answer, and will do more damage to an engine in the long run (especially in a diesel) than restrained driving while cold. If light driving while cold is not an option, then get a Webasto or use a high idle, which is less damaging than a low idle. But don't take my word for it. On your cummins did you remove the factory fuel filter housing in the engine bay? I live in the USA but I’m wondering how a lift pump does in the extreme cold where you are and how it holds up. Is a lift pump good to install for cold weather or are they good in general?

    • @darkirondiesel
      @darkirondiesel  3 года назад +4

      The lift pumps are good in general! If you are worried about your fuel gelling up you can get an electric heater that goes in the lift pump block. Yeah I got rid of my factory fuel filter, if you go to my channel I uploaded a video probably about a month ago called 5.9 fuel filter delete, I kinda go over things there.
