    We totally failed to mention all the places we went!

    Liverpool is where the last Confederate forces surrendered. It was a Confederate warship that had attacked a ship after the formal surrender in the USA. Fearing they would be tried as pirates, if they surrendered in the USA, they said to Liverpool. Liverpool was a place that was known to have Confederate sympathies as a lot of ships were built for the Confederacy in Liverpool. The ship surrendered to a Royal Navy ship.

    • @stephensmith4480
      @stephensmith4480 2 года назад

      That was The CSS Shenandoah, under the command of Lieutenant commander James Waddell. He surrendered at Liverpool Town hall. The Ship was originally called The Sea King when she was built on The River Clyde. There are a lot of references as well as physical objects that show Liverpool`s support for The Confederacy Marcus.

    • @robertdraper5782
      @robertdraper5782 2 года назад +1

      The HQ of the Confederate Navy was originally in the back room of the Liver Hotel on the top corner of South Road in Waterloo. Later they moved to rooms in one of the houses on Blucher Terrace just off the bottom of South Road, it's not really the sort of thing that deserves a blue plaque from English Heritage. There's also or used to be a memorial to Confederate sailors in Smithdown Road cemetery, those champions of revisionist history, The Daughters of the Confederacy did a wreath laying a couple of decades ago, they didn't make too much of a fuss about seeing as it's in the heart of Liverpool's Black Community.

    • @stephensmith4480
      @stephensmith4480 2 года назад

      @@robertdraper5782 I didn`t know about The Liver hotel but I seem to recall something about The wreath laying service. Some of the old houses around the Grove street area have got Confederate illustrations built into the interior of the Buildings, in the fancy ceiling designs etc. In fact one of the most ornate in now some sort of education centre or such like. The American civil war had huge implications for parts of Northern England, places like Chorley where they did a lot of trade in the cotton and linen industry. It`s a fascinating period of history.

    If you Americans are not used to public transport, here's the etiquette - when you get up to leave the vehicle, always have a quick look at the seat to check everything - don't let hassle and bustle distract you.
    It's drilled into us from birth, so much so, the head goes down automatically without thinking, to check, whenever we get off.

      The Liverpool accent is as much North Welsh influenced as it is Irish. Also, the accent is far more modern than the vikings - only the last 150 years. Before that everyone would have spoke with a Lancashire accent.

    As others have said, Manchester is a good place to visit if you get the chance, lots of museums, great buildings (look up John Ryland's Library for example, or Manchester Town Hall) Roman ruins, Chethams library (oldest free reference library in the English speaking world), the world's first public railway station (now a museum of science & industry) and lots of places to eat & drink.

      Make sure you don't get stuck in London though! Travel around a bit because London is expensive! The London eye, I'd pass on that. Too much money for one view. Get walking and view the same things from the ground. Just soak up the vibe rather than paying entry on everything. Although I would recommend The Tower of London, one of my favourite places, but then I'm into that whole Wars of the Roses and Tudor period. There's so many beautiful places in England, and IMO far more beautiful than London! 😳 I'm English btw, my parents are from East London, although they moved out and I was later born in Sussex. It depends what you're looking for really, so feel free to ask any questions if you want for tips, what type of thing you want to experience etc. Off the top of my head, my top places would be, a DAY trip to London, I couldn't stay there. York is beautiful. Pretty much all of Cornwall is idyllic, and Devon, and Dorset too. Canterbury in Kent is lovely. I love the vibe at English seasides, my favourites would be Bournemouth all day long my number one for sure, Hastings, Margate and Dymchurch. They all have typical English fish & chips, ice creams, fairgrounds, striped deckchairs, flags, gift shops, amusement arcades, buckets & spades, candy floss etc etc. I love the beach, any beach. The Jurassic coastline around Devon and Cornwall you can find 600 million year old fossils! Cornwall has lots of inlets, coves, hideaway beaches scattered with caves that were once used by smugglers! Cornwall has a vibe all of it's own, very ethereal, whimsical, superstitions, traditions, pagan and witchy vibes. Very quirky. Anyway, if you want to ask anything let me know. 😘😘😘

      @@tamielizabethallaway2413 thanks for the info and suggestions. We do plan to spend a few days in some other places (the Cotswolds, Bath, St Ives and York for sure). Canterbury sounds like a great place to add in. Would that work well as a day trip from London? Thank you!

    • @tamielizabethallaway2413
      @tamielizabethallaway2413 2 года назад

      @@lizattwood5167 yes it would! It's a beautiful historic town! There's Canterbury cathedral and cobbled paths and stone cottages. Most places like that are an easy train ride from London! 😁 St Ives, Cornwall...not a day trip surely? 😳 You're staying there? Gorgeous! I hope you have wonderful weather. I know September is out of season but we do sometimes get really lucky and have a freaky hot week here and there when you wouldn't expect it. I've had many lovely September breaks around England. And March too! I call them freak weeks....😂 But I'm not complaining! Lovely to hang washing outside. There's a place in York called Jorvik, pronounced as Your Vick, it's underground, not far from York castle which is also great btw. Jorvik is a real Viking settlement discovered under the ground, carefully unearthed to show how they lived in the villages they built here when they invaded 1000+ years ago. There's narration as you go round and people dressed up in costume etc. There's also The Bloody Tour of York which is a similar exhibition type of attraction and takes you back through England's bloody history in that area. Bath is another beautiful city, lots of Roman history there. People used to come from all over the country (rich people! Nobles etc!) to "take the waters" at Bath which were supposedly healing waters. I guess they were healing.... inasmuch as being in any water feels therapeutic! They were probably nicer in the Roman times with their ritual oil cleanses and personal hygiene. Not sure the waters would be so healing in the Medieval years...with how rarely they bathed it was probably more like soup! 🤣 Wow you're really going left right and centre on your trip! I hope you don't plan all of those as day trips! Well, it's certainly possible, but you're gonna be bloody knackered every night! If St. Ives is a day trip just peep out at the station when you arrive but stay on the train to go straight back again 😜😜😜 It's a long old way from London so I hope you're staying there!!! Don't forget The Harry Potter Studio Tour is just outside of London if that's your thing? Or a late night Jack The Ripper tour walking around the locations. Actually you can also do a recreated with actors similar scare tour at The London Dungeons. York has Dungeons too, owned by the same entertainment group, Merlin, so it's worth looking for a one-price-ticket for certain attractions if they fit your interests. Pay once and have endless visits to all their attractions while you're here. They're not the only company to offer such deals. Some include a one-off ticket for a list of attractions and train travel to and from, so shop around for things like that for better value. But even just absorbing each area and not paying an entry fee to any attraction would be just as wonderful, especially to someone looking at things for the first time. You don't have to go into places is my point. I'm pretty sure all museums and art galleries are free entry in London....check out www.visitlondon.com .... Or might be .co.uk instead of the dot com.... can't remember, anyway they have lists of all the places that are free to explore. London is expensive, so do beware of hiked up prices, but if money is no object or you've saved specifically to have fun without caring about costs, then indulge and enjoy. There's always supermarkets to pick up sandwiches, drinks and savouries etc for a cheaper lunch, and there's always McDonald's, even just to grab a fresh coffee for one pound, rather than whatever Starbucks charge! 🙄 If you wanna splurge, go ahead and spoil yourself, immerse yourself, but, if you do have a stricter budget, there's ways to do things more cheaply is what I'm saying. Just a walk along the South Bank at the weekend is a great day out, enjoy the view across the Thames River (pronounced TEMS) to see Tower Bridge, The Tower of London, The Houses of Parliament (which is actually The Palace of Westminster, a formal royal palace), The Gherkin, The Shard, Big Ben (which is actually The Elizabeth Tower - Big Ben is really the name of the huge bell inside the clock tower, not the tower itself.), Westminster Abbey (church of England), Westminster Cathedral (Roman Catholic), st. Paul's Cathedral....endless iconic buildings all along the opposite side of the River. As you walk along the South Bank, on your side you have endless book stalls, eclectic shops, kooky pubs, eateries, The London Eye, The London Dungeons, McDonald's, restaurants, games arcades, street performers, people sitting outside the pubs, The Tate Modern Art Museum, National Theatre, Sea Life Aquarium, street foods, souvenirs, postcards, benches galore, even a mini beach which I wouldn't recommend sitting on but it's fun if people are doing sand sculptures. If you are fit and healthy it's around a 15 minute straight walk from Westminster, down the South Bank and turn off to Borough Market....not so quick when it's crowded obviously! But it's a fairly straight walk. Also similar distance walking from Westminster area and down behind it to head to Buckingham Palace, Piccadilly Circus etc. St. James' Park opposite the palace is just one of many beautiful royal parks found all over London. Lovely just to sit in the sunshine with a packed lunch in between walking around. For all of London's buildings and construction, there's actually a large amount of green space to be found all over London, most areas have large well maintained parks within them. If there's anything else you'd like to know just ask, but I will STFU now before I become a tourist guide! 😂😂😂 I'm excited for you! I love to see people, particularly Americans, seeing England for themselves and discovering a lot of what they've been told is not true! We can be rowdy, we like a drink, we swear a lot...it may be unfamiliar but its not meant in any way aggressively most of the time. You should hear the things I say to my 88 year old Dad....and the swearing and names he calls me in return! 🤣 It's all banter, teasing, sarcasm. Oh and if you're a person of colour, you may find it refreshing to find people reacting to your American accent and not batting an eyelid to your shade! We judge a person's integrity, not skin! Well I guess there can be arseholes anywhere, but they are very much NOT the majority so if you are unlucky to come across such a cretin, we don't claim them ok! 😘😘😘 Are you packed yet? Lol! I bet you're sooooo excited! I hope it's everything you dreamed of and more besides! 💖💖💖 xxxxx

    You should have visited Anfield, home of Liverpool Football Club, the team that was playing in the Champions League Final, its England's most successful European football club, even though they lost this time.
    Next time you are here you need to get out of the cities and visit Stonehenge, The Norfolk Broads, Devon, Cornwall, York, The Lake District and Wales among loads of other places in the UK. Devon and Cornwall have most picturesque little fishing villages and gorgeous beaches. There's loads of Stately Homes and Mansions to visit like Longleat House and Safari Park, Blenheim Palace and you should of visited Windsor Castle in London while you were there. England has so much more to offer than just London, the English countryside is the best in the world on a beautiful summers day.

    Great vid, I left Liverpool 13 years ago, the pier head on the docks, the museum there was the last job I worked on before I left.
    Also Liverpool one is where the trendy shops are, next time you go there check out Albert dock, some great museums there about history. :)
    Your scouse accent was ok, try they do though don't they. :)
    I miss my hometown, try to get home twice a year.
    Anyway, love your vid.

    Great vid. Watched your London ones yesterday, but I'm a Scouser and some of this was not far from where I live. I'm wondering if you went to our 2 cathedrals (St.Luke's is just a church)? But I'm sure you would have shown that, and they are both on the opposite end of the same street. Hope everyone displayed our famous Scouse friendliness and you had a great stay. I love your hair by the way (even though it"s red haha - I support Everton). Enjoy Glasgow, I've never been, so will be interesting.

    People always think we're so stuck up and our food is awful! Thank you for realising and promoting the opposite! Music, pubs, drinking, laughing and dancing is Britain! We just wanna have fun! We're very friendly, but not "in yer face" we wait on the sidelines until we know you want to chat and have someone invade your space. People think that's us being snobby....no it's politeness. Start talking and you won't get rid of us! A simple afternoon chat at a pub lunch can easily turn into grabbing a kebab at 3am after leaving a club! We're not raging alcoholics 🤣 but if you're gonna have a drink, why not have ten! 😂😂😂
    I'm glad you're getting to see us here for who we are. Only thing I would say, is that don't go home thinking we pay the prices you've probably been charged for food etc, especially in London!!! If I go up to London I'll always grab lunch from a supermarket, sandwiches, crisps, juice etc, or find a McDonald's or all-you-can-eat buffet place. I dread to think what some of your food or cocktails cost! 😳 I saw a bloke selling bottles of coke in London last time I went, for £5 each! The Japanese tourist's were buying loads of them. It wasn't even a proper shop or stall, I swear he had them in big sport's bags on the pavement, but it was so hot the tourists were thirsty and not knowing the area I guess the Coke man was the nearest! £5 for a Coke! £5 for a vodka and Coke is too much! 🤣
    I had to laugh at you looking for a plaque on every building! 😂 Probably just someone's council house! I get it, you see old buildings and think it must be historic. Yeah it could be a Grade 2 listed thatched cottage from 1850 and still be a council house! It's England! If a building is still fit for use why knock it down? We build to last so we walk straight past 12th century churches or Tudor houses without batting an eye, because they're totally normal to us.
    I wish you'd have gone on the Harry Potter Studio Tour whilst in London. You'd obviously have loved it.
    BTW you two blend in seamlessly. Probably the least American looking couple I've seen! You both look British. 😘

    I know this is way too late, but more people should know that UK train tickets can be partly or fully refunded if the service is cancelled or late. Often you'll only receive a portion of the price of the ticket in compensation if you managed to get to your destination eventually, but it's definitely worth it and more people should do it so that train operators are actually held accountable for their poor operating practices and greed that makes train services in this country so often disrupted.

      I think one of the reasons London doesn’t feel as friendly (especially central London) is cause it’s full of people from all over the world, either living there or tourists so I think people are less inclined to be chatty etc cause of expected language barriers or just cultural differences
