The funny thing is, In witchcraft, when 'Virgin blood' is referenced. it's not talking about someone who hasn't had sex. it's talking about blood that has never been used in a ritual. So they were in fact saying someone without ties to witchcraft would light the candle and bring them back. but i don't think even the film makers knew this so they played off the joke. but now you know. Cue the star with the rainbow tail.

Despite it being said "HOCUS POCUS" was a "bomb" when initially released it actually had a respectable opening weekend just as your comment implies. While it was by no means a blockbuster in 1993 it was not a "bomb" either. It was actually mildly profitable and considered to be significantly more successful than Bette Midler's previous film at the time "FOR THE BOYS" which was a huge box office failure and which seemed to be "for almost nobody." Bette made mention at the time of the "HOCUS POCUS" release that she was pleased that its box office performance was an improvement from the surprisingly major disappointment of "FOR THE BOYS" which had been her dream project.

The song 'I Put A Spell on You" was originally from the 50's by Screaming Jay Hawkins who would come out of a coffin on stage and sing the song. Great job Minty. Some very interesting unknown facts. I was an adult when "Hocus Pocus" first came out in theaters and I fell in love with it from the very start. My kids were very small then so they did not see it til they were older on video and they fell in love with it. My wife and I both loved the song "Come Little Children". When I first rented the video of HP (No not Lovecraft) I told my wife "You are going to love this song Sarah sings to the children to lure them". And she did. And everytime we watched the movie as a family when "Come Little Children" was playing my wife would ask me to boost the volume. Great Halloween classic.
