On November 19, 2017 close to 50 of Canada’s most celebrated musicians gathered at the legendary Commodore Ballroom to help a dear friend-- John Mann, singer for Spirit of the West.
John has Early-onset Alzheimer's which demands incredible resources, and the musical community rallied for an amazing show of support in one unforgettable night of music and love.
A makeshift studio was assembled in the building to record this song on the spot as a memento of the gathering and to help raise funds for John's continuing care.
    This is for John.
This special recording of "Home For A Rest" was performed by:
    Jim Cuddy of Blue Rodeo
    Sarah McLachlan
    Alan Doyle
    Ed Robertson of Barenaked Ladies
    Spirit Kids
    Barney & Dustin Bentall
    Colin James
    Craig Northey and The Odds
    Shari Ulrich
    Jim Byrnes
    Kendel Carson
    Daniel Lapp
Spirit of the West with Cory Tetford, Shehab Illyas & Kris MacFarlane
Thanks to Shehab Illyas for compiling the footage to create this video to accompany the song, and to the kind folks below for sharing what they captured at the show:
    Christine Lovely
    Darlene Dobson
    Shaun Ledding
    Lynda Elstad
    Terry David Mulligan

I was recently in Uruguay for a pipe band gathering. We ended up in an Irish pub dancing with a bunch of the south American band members. They told us to put a Canadian song on. We chose this song and showed them how we sing and dance back home. They loved it and we had a blast! RIP John, your music lives on and continues to make us all dance, smile and sing along, no matter where we are in the world

I heard this song described as the best Irish-sounding song by a Canadian band about a trip to England ever.
Rest well, John. You’re home for your rest.

That was a pretty special day. Just a host of who's who in Canadian music from West and East there that day. I'm the far left hand corner of the stage myself, near my chum Pat Steward of the Odds. I had played in band that Hugh from Spirit of the West produced called The Town Pants, and we had opened for SOTW on many occasions over the years... But I was more formally on that day as the promoter rep for Live Nation, and helping Byron the TD at the Commodore catch fly balls where needed as he was very busy... But it was a very smooth day and a lot of fun.
John was quite present and great on stage. The disease that finally took him a couple of years later would rob him of so much of that energy of course, but music did a lot to awake something in him, that even if you couldn't always communicate so well with him, you knew he was there.
You did a great job Alan spearheading the whole project, and good on you for doing so.
The tiled room that you see with the black diamonds on the walls that people recorded their vocal parts in, is actually the upstairs gents bathroom at the Commodore! I can recall taping a little sign on the door "Studio A - Recording In Progress", that I can't remember if I took a photo of. I was worried somebody was going to walk in to use the toilet and accidentally interrupt somebody's take!
I guess it was the last time John might have been in that room if I remember right. I watched him leave with his family and he turned and waved to everybody left, band and crew and friends... It was a resonant moment for us at the Commodore--we all realized that we were seeing him leave the ballroom for the last time.
I'll likely update a book I wrote about the history of the Commodore ("Live at the Commodore" that came out in 2015) with this unforgettable evening. It was one of those benchmark nights there that the venue has had so many of.

This is Canada at its core. This band that never really had any radio hits - didn't make millions, it's still an institution in Canada. The love of their music and their lead singer and bring all of these superstars together to perform this tribute. And they play and sing it all together - megastars and not alike. That's what Canada is.

I'm currently a Candian University student, I just started listening to Spirit of the West because of an experience I had a few months ago. There is a coffee shop in my town, and upstairs they have a tiny room with a stage at the front, where they do open mics. My girlfriend plays there occasionally, and I went to watch her. Anyways, this guy comes on stage, and absolutely shreds this song. Here we were, a bunch of kids, bouncing off the walls of this tiny, cramped room in a frenzy. I was actually afraid that we would collapse the floor and fall onto the patrons of the coffee shop. I will never forget that experince, and it pains me to realize the era I have missed.

I'm just starting my first year at BCIT and I just found this song. I cant stop listening to it, I love this kind of music but you hear it coming out less and less which is a little sad. I'm only 18 and I hope that I still have the chance to attend a party where they play this instead of the modern rap that we all hear.

@@robertmacnaughton4190 That, sir, is one of the kindest responses I have read in a while. Joshua, you may have missed seeing SOTW, live but you have their music to enjoy. Just know that you'll find and create your own joy to add to that. The experiences of good music never truly die, they just get experienced and passed on. I'm glad you're listening to this incredible band. Now you'll know why so many people smile as much as they do when their music comes on. They were ahead of their time, and their music continues to stand to that test.

I completely fell in love with their energy and take on folk music. I saw them multiple times in the 1990's (RIP Ontario Place Forum) and had a blast each and every time. Much love to John, SOTW, and all the fans out there.

This is an iconic Canadian song. The dance floor goes from sparse to full just 10 seconds into this song. It’s truly amazing and infectious!!
I saw them at a very small venue with maybe a crowd of maybe 300 in the late 1990s. Very cool!
It was 3 months ago that I wanted to listen to some music searching up GBS and then came across SOTW videos then this one. I had no idea John Mann was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 2014. I was very surprised. Then I did a further search to see if I could donate money to him/his family and discovered he sadly died last fall.
I will not forget him! Love ‘Home for a Rest’ and Venice is Sinking. The story behind Home For a Rest is very cool!

I first saw Spirit of the West at the CNE Grandstand in the summer of 1990. They were opening for Melissa Etheridge and it was pouring rain but it didn't matter once the band took the stage and started in on "Home For A Rest"... the whole audience was on their feet and dancing in the rain. I was at the concert with my brother and my best friend and, to this day, when I hear this song I am back at the Grandstand dancing my heart out.
Ten years later my mother started showing the first signs of Alzheimer's, which had already taken my grandmother, and we began the painful journey that this terrible disease takes the entire family on. I think it wonderful that so many of Canada's music community came together to create what has instantly become a favourite version of a beloved song.

A band I never got to see play. Another band synonymous with Canadian music. This tribute both makes me want to get up and dance and since along because it is such a Canadian song, yet also saddens me because we lost an amazing entertainer and person. It was a testament to thw man thst all this amazing Canadian artist made this tribute.

Do they still close down pubs/bars with this song??? Although this was played usually once during the night, THIS was ALWAYS the final FINAL SONG of the night 😃🙃😃...got the energy up before the lights went on 😔
What a MOST fitting tribute! If Gord was still with us he'd for SURE have been on that stage!!!

Lydia Stevens If you've never been to an Alan Doyle concert you have never had a fun time! Alan gives a show that has you on your feet the entire time! Your smiling, laughing and all of your 'down in the dump' feelings no longer exist! He transcends you into a world of joy and happiness with his talent and music. His stories are filled with laughable witticisms. He makes me proud to be a Canadian! To know him is to love him, to read his books is an insight to his life and his music a look into his soul!

That was amazing! Such a great event and fun to see so many artists together. Reminds me of BNL Ships and Dip cruises and the all night jams.

So, this is the best thing ever for a Canadian legend. Someone needs to put the names of the singers. I can only identify half of them. It would be nice to know who they are. Finally I gotta say without names, there are some Canadian artists that are missing. Shame on them. Unless they had a good reason.
