THE BONHAM HERTA FILL - STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN /NIGHT FLIGHT/HOTS ON FOR NOWHERE

  • I had a request to demo and breakdown the epic Stairway To Heaven fill we all know and love. Its basically a Herta type fill which is played starting with the RH- snare, LH- tom, RH-floor, BD. The fill comes in about mid way through Jimmy's guitar solo. He plays the same fill in Night Flight. In this video I discuss the structure of the fill and also do some comparisons to other similar fills he played on Black Dog and Hots On For Nowhere.

Very nice video. Interesting to note that the Stairway fill is a deviation of a fill by Max Roach from “Big Sid”. Bonham loved Jazz and Big Band. Krupa being his idol. What makes him so great is that his drumming is deeply rooted in percussion history. That and his amazing, feel, finesse, power and swing.

I've always felt the same way about learning parts from your favorite players. I think it's valuable to learn their various techniques so it can soak into your playing, but it's not critical to go into minute detail so you can play it exactly the same they did at some point in time. I'm sure for a lot of my favorite players that they couldn't reproduce their own parts note for note since it's as much about spontaneity.

I always thought Bonham paused between the last 2 strokes of that herta section...I listened to that part again on the studio version, and, by George, he may have thrown in a kick...I like it better with a pause...
A bit off subject (but still regarding Stairway to Heaven), I have concluded that Bonham played a triplet groove at the ~6:45-7:15 vocal section - any comments about this from anyone here?...

    • @levinzechner8274

You need big vintage drums (24"-26" bass drum, 14", 16" and 18" toms) with a ludwig supraphonic LM402. The drums are tuned very high and the reso head is always even higher. Paiste cymbals (2002 and giant beats), less or no muffling. And of course, the most important: get that Bonham feel for playing.

Golden information. .. you put a relaxed feel to it.. it seems less rushed when you play it... hard to explain. You foot technique still impresses me though... even when playing softly you timing is perfect... it's really annoying me.. If you send me your drum sizes, I'll send you the exact tuning. First you have to
buy a Tama Tension Watch. It's like a torque wrench , but it sits on top of the skin
1" from the rim of the drum and then you turn the Tension rod to the exact amount
of tension and then follow my tuning order on the skin. When you are done, you can write down the tension numbers for the top and bottom to each drum. This way whenever you change your skins you will
always have the exact tuning,, FOREVER. My 1972 Rogers Drums are a Bonham Clone drum set. 3-ply maple/poplar/maple drums. Send it to my email!!
