I guess the greatest thief in the universe really got robbed.
21:54. I feel like it’s a huge problem that Illharg wasn’t even mentioned in the entire story, despite the fact that A LITERAL GOD SHOWED UP TO THE FIGHT AGAINST BOLAS
I know you didn't blame the writer anyway, but just for the record, that's is on the design team: Maro has said they originallly only had the 4 Amonkhet Gods in as a incomplete cycle, and then only added in Illharg right at the very end of design to complete the cycle. Just wanted to make a little sense of it for you!
You're assuming Ilharg showed up to fight Bolas. Ilharg's depiction on the flavor text of other cards shows us an ancient god, forgotten by all save special Gruul shamans, known as Druids of the Old Ways. Ilharg is seen as some sort of apocalyptic herald, the eater of civilization, akin to imagery found in real life apocalypse myths, like the 4 Horsemen of the Apocalypse. My assumption was that Ilharg showed up because Ravnica was burning down, and was looking to join in on the fun. The Raze-boar was freed to fulfill its ancient destiny, tearing down Ravnica brick by brick. It's no coincidence that Nikya, a Druid of the Old Ways, got a card in GRN. She's the one who backed Domri as leader of the Gruul, as she saw him as some sort of Ilharg-incarnate. and I think flavor text featuring her back in GTC was the first time we ever heard of Ilharg at all in MTG. And I think that if Ilharg had been depicted in the story, he would have been another obstacle, another evil god on a rampage, trying to return Ravnica to a world before the cityscape ruled the skyline.
I got the implication from his dies ability that he was working with Bolas, for the same reason I got from Angrath's -2 that he was; mechanically, all of Bolas's gods have come back after death abilities, while other gods have just been indestructible. Unfortunately, Ilharg wasn't even slightly in the book, so y'know.
Ashiok should've never gotten a card, instead it just being a card for tezzeret (i hope I spelled that correctly) leaving the buy a box promo Planeswalker to be Dack Fayden

In regard to Davriel Cane: in the children of the nameless novella it becomes pretty clear that his spell absorption targets the ability to cast a spell. In regards to the logic behind the title "anarch of", its not an nonsensical as it first appears, if you think about it as not a self given title but as how bolas and other characters see him Bolas had supported domri so that he could destabilize ravnica, and from bolas' view, everyone is either a pawn like tezzeret or a nuisance like the gatewatch, so while from domri's perspective him attempting to team up with bolas is a mutually beneficial alliance, from bolas' perspective domri is just another pawn who is there to serve him until he stops having use for him, and, regardless of whether or not domri realises, bolas has manipulated him into being "his" anarch, in the sense that he is an anarch, who's actions only benefit bolas, and who is under bolas' control
25:20 I come from the future and that’s a good point. How come Rowan, Will, and Oko weren’t on Ravnica? Garruk was officially said to be quarantined away by bolas so he didn’t murder anybody before bolas could, but why weren’t the commander planeswalkers / Koth there either? Cheetos

am I the only one that thinks Teyo should have been from ravnica? the point of view of a story in Ravnica that completely changes the plane and revolves around its entire identity, maybe, should be someone from ravnica, no? Teyo has no stakes in anything, he's just kinda there and nothing of what happens involves him personally. Also "Chandra's triumph" flavour text should have said "her triumph came not from achieving her ideal self, but from burning shit down HARDER! F you Jaya!"
Teyo was clearly meant to be an audience surrogate character. So I think the thinking in making him from Gobakhan was to facilitate exposition, he can have the guilds and key players explained to him, and therefore the reader. And I find something compelling in someonest first planeswalk being into an absolute clusterfuck, and his character is demonstrated in how he remains once the planar beacon is shut down. Teyo is honestly one of the few highlights of an otherwise tepid book for me
@@seanowens5423 That makes sense, I just find it weird that the guilds of ravnica do almost nothing in the war for ravnica. With the exception of gay pikachu wizard, everybody else is at best in the sidelines, if not completely MIA.

Love the video. I do feel like it would be reasonable to concede, though, that anarchy on Ravnica would look a lot different than anarchy on our world. Since the entire Ravnican planet is comprised of just one, monolithic super-government, as opposed to our world's many to choose from and be let down by, and since that super-government quite intentionally shafted the Gruul millennia ago by charging them to take care of the wilderness and then systematically dismantling that wilderness with ever more urban expansion, I think Ravnican/Gruul anarchy would be accurately described as any effort that aims tol completely dismantle that super-government, by any means necessary, even if that means pledging allegiance to a new despot, because even the new despot's (Bolas') world would look radically different from the old. No more guilds, no more urban expansion, no more Gruul getting the shaft. Even under Bolas' tyranny, Ravnica would be fundamentally and irrevocably altered. Unlike in our world where overthrowing one despot and their little clutch of power inevitably leads to just another despot with a similar-looking clutch of power.
About angrath having amass, if he gives all of the creatures you control menace, which I guess him keeping them safe by keeping the eternals at bay, would kinda make sense if YOU BELIEVE HARD ENOUGH. Amass could maybe be that if you make only one army and all your creatures have menace the army can’t block/ kill them because he’s keeping them at bay, which still wouldn’t make sense because YOUR making it but hey, WHAT CAN I SAY EXCEPT YOUR WELCOME. I’m glad to know that I’m not the only that thinks of Angrath as having a Cockney accent.
Man, from yhe bits of the book you showed, Greg had a fetish for listing how many people each planeswalker was killing per attack.
He really has a talent for giving every possible unnecessary detail and yet not enough important detail.
Im STILL mad about Dack Fayden's death. just a few months before this set was spoiled, my Dack Fayden cosplay was completed.
I was livid.
In regards to the logic behind the title "anarch of", its not an nonsensical as it first appears, if you think about it as not a self given title but as how bolas and other characters see him
Bolas had supported domri so that he could destabilize ravnica, and from bolas' view, everyone is either a pawn like tezzeret or a nuisance like the gatewatch, so while from domri's perspective him attempting to team up with bolas is a mutually beneficial alliance, from bolas' perspective domri is just another pawn who is there to serve him until he stops having use for him, and, regardless of whether or not domri realises, bolas has manipulated him into being "his" anarch, in the sense that he is an anarch, who's actions only benefit bolas, and who is under bolas' control
Wait a second, did the part where Rakdos was Gideon's mount ever happen in the book?
25:20 I come from the future and that’s a good point. How come Rowan, Will, and Oko weren’t on Ravnica? Garruk was officially said to be quarantined away by bolas so he didn’t murder anybody before bolas could, but why weren’t the commander planeswalkers / Koth there either?
Cheetos
If I may reach here, jace's abilities kinda fit in a vague way. The mill representing digging for an answer where each thing that doesnt work out cost him, like Gideon's failure to kill bolas leading to gideons death. Then his passive showing how he found victory after he believe all hope was gone and was at his wits end (an empty deck). Like a said, a helluva reach, but yeah, there ya go
I haven't actually bothered reading the novel, or tracking down your audiobook, but all the excerpts I've seen, every last one, have been so awful that I'm kind of embarrassed for the rest of the creative team....
I have never (ever) seen a story where something was out in parentheses, until this.
It's like they published the author's cliff notes before he wrote the actual story.
43:44 It doesn't actually make it redundant. That abbility gives haste in case you'd spend her last loyalty counter on that abbility (or her being destroyed after the abbility is activated by some other means)
My friend. What in the hell is wrong with Dovin’s toe?!
He is supposed to have 6 toes.
So he aded 1 to the picture, for some sweet Canon
@@monowhite7989 Its. backwards. Is that canon?!
As someone who homebrewed a Naya Horse Modern deck and is currently brewing a 5C horse tribal EDH deck with morophon, you caught me really fucking off guard. Thank you Mr Spice8Rack for appreciating the horse players out there.
Saheeli & Huatli should have summoned the dinosaurs automatons they were working in the conclusion of the Ixalan story, how cool would it have been for them to be operating FREAKING DINOSAUR GUNDAMS?!?!
31:09 did weisman actually misspell Ojutai and it was left in? How did this make it past any editor?
I gotta say, I love everything about your videos, but most of all I love the editing for your bits is just things slapped on things slapped on things
31:50 When in doubt blame Tefairi. Time magic was obviously used to give them time to finish their fight to figure out who will be on top.
just found your channel, was not expecting such a high quality video! keep up the great work!
Tbh, even I don't expect high quality content from me. I'm glad you found me
We are blessed yet again to have this joy of a person speak about Magic the Gathering. Strap in fpr 50 minutes of ear pleasure.
Welp you heard it here first! Spice 8 Rack doesn't give us quality content
the definition of a freudian slip.
Damn Spice, that was some cute nail varnish
PREMIUM content
You're literally the channel that taught me that anarcho-monarchism is a thing and the reason I put it in this script. Curse you. Love your stuff.
good lord i love your graduation pic, also great intro for Ral
I've been tempted to get the book and completely rewrite it from scratch with proper grammar and story. Completely free.
"I hope this is the future of magic's storytelling"...
And somewhere out there, a monkey's paw clenches a finger, as theros beyond death is being planned :(
Also I don't blame you for confusion on Druid v. Shaman. WotC doesn't know shit about either. This is literally their ruling for magic classes:
Does it cast studied magic? - Wizard
Does it cast nature magic? - Druid
Does it cast healing magic? - Cleric
Does it cast magic but not apply to the above? - Shaman
Because of this, Shaman is basically bastardized as an umbrella term for shamans, animists, necromancers, falsifiers, witches, gypsies, mystics, drug abusers, magic abuserd, etc;
Okay here's my time to shine this is more. A reference to jaces ultimate goal to learn all possible his mill is reoresentive of his ability to instill amnesia in pepole I hope that helps you it more to do with his charecter and not what he's done in the books while it’s not good for the story but it’s more about his general character
I always assume that magic content can't be this funny, but you regularly make me full on chuckle. Out loud! Gadzooks!
Sebastian Applewhite, love a good Gadzooks! Thanks for such a nice comment
F*****g love it!!! Keep up the amazing original content creation and dope editing!
squishyobsidian hef I’m f*****g glad you enjoyed it!
I want to point out that the "ghost assasin" bit was picked up by Django Wexler, the writer of prequel, in the form of banter between Kaya and Hekara.
10/10
OK, I know I'm 3 years late to the party BUT! Liiana's passive is flavorful as when her eternals die it takes less focus to control them all as her mental strain lessens she is able to think of new tactics gaining knowledge and thus drawing cards
Why does Teyo have the same face as James Charles
am I the only one that thinks Teyo should have been from ravnica? the point of view of a story in Ravnica that completely changes the plane and revolves around its entire identity, maybe, should be someone from ravnica, no?
Can't stop laughing about all the SPEED that Samut has
Also liliana's planswalker card from w.o.t.s does not show her wearing the veil, yet she wears the veil pretty much the whole book
The "ghost assasin" bit also happens in The Gathering Storm prequels, but between Kaya and Hekara. However, the two seem to be more amused by the exchange than Karn ever was.
Low key shade to the creatives behind MTG at 39 minutes: the planeswalkers' inane ability to summon creatures. Or Freudian slip? You decide.
Side note, I really like how Ral's Outburst combines the +1 and -3 of Ral, Izzet Viceroy
Maybe liliana breaking the chain veil was an artist mistake?
Josh Bublitz I have to imagine *shrug emoji*
@@Spice8Rack I mean it still makes more lore sense than Tsabo Tavoc's card.
I bet Wizards never expected someone to do this much research.
As a wherewolf, Arlin only transforms because of innistrads moon, which is why she can’t transform on Ravnica.
You're my favorite MtG lore youtuber. Just right amount of lore, wit, sass, and humor.
Love your content man, keep up the good work!
I’m so sad that random viashino died, I mean he was my favourite character, come on Wizards!
45:01 You should do an alignment video for all the characters
Wotc should let you voice Liliana in Arena
I like the flavor text on Spice's chest. It's a cold and it's a broken waluigi. In comic sans. Excellent flavor.
42:51 the freakin green hill zone im dead lol
0:59 so *that's* what they mean when they talk about spoilers on cars. Neat.
Meta-flavour. Sue me. Oh wait, you cannot! You are too cool for that, chap. That was tasty to watch
Wow, this is a thing. If this is live though, I won't be able to see it. This is my first time, please be gentle Mr.FansOfSpice8Rack. And you too, Mr.StandUpPoet. I see you behind the scenes look^ing at me.
Btw, its Amanatou (I spelled her name wrong, I bet)
It goes live in 10 hours! You haven't missed a thing :) This is my first time premiering anything so I wanted to do it early to ensure minimum fuckery
@@Spice8Rack I mean in 10 hours I'll be just starting work. Sorry daddy, love you still, from your terribly ugly son who always buys the ugliest ties for father's day.
@@CherubEros The fathers day message I never thought I'd ever get
@@CherubEros are you really there son
The reason Ugin's plus ability is what it is is because his favored plane is Tarkir, and the morph mechanic is one of the signature features of the plane.
NGL, I had checked out of the written story by this point and assumed that because Angrath had Amass it meant he was working for Bolas.
We get our first Viashino planeswalker and they get merked before we even learn their name!!
32:25 what if that is just what remains of Bolas's statue on the ground after it fall?
otherwise, I'm suppose to think that they are like DBZ character and fight while flying around and end up in the top of that statue that look like the tallest place around just because?
