  • Italy is an AMAZING place to visit but there are a couple of things you should know about so you can make the most of your time there. Here's what I learned about coffee and trains and overpriced bread.

The bread they bring you is free (I never had to pay for it) but never ever ever use it to "mop up" the sauce on your plate, it's really not a thing you do in a restaurant. We in Italy call it scarpetta but it's something you do in the privacy of your own home. The bread is there to eat with your meal.

In molti ristoranti anche stellati il pane serve SOLO per la scarpetta, la cosa che "è inelegante e non si fa" e molto anni 90 se lo fai ora e non vivi in un paese di snobbettini del cazzo nessuno ti guarderà male

the bread things it's false. COPERTO it a fee (usually 2euro) that include bread and everything and is not a tip for the waiters. if you don't want bread you still have to pay COPERTO. About tipping, it's up to you. if you go on a fancy restaurant you maybe should tip like 5/10% of the bill. if you are young and broke and you don't tip it's ok, if you are a family and your bill it's 100 euros, for example, you can tip 5 or 10 euros. the waiter will appreciate.

there's no tap water in the restaurant, but you can ask a glass of tap water in a bar. if you drink your own water in a restaurant it's kinda rude.

I’m from America, but going to Italy with my school. I’ve never been out of the country, but I know when you travel other places you shouldn’t drink their water because your body isn’t used to it, so should I just not get water while I’m there?
