      The fact is that it’s a Populist Nationalist movement and you will find people from all levels of society in it. I saw this coming while Trump was running in the 2016 campaign while he made clear his admiration of Andrew Jackson and even publicly visited his grave to lay a wreath on it and after he became president ordered that his portrait be put back in the Oval Office, Andrew Jackson was a cruel Populist and wanted to drive the Native people from the lands so that white settlers could possess it. Even after the Supreme Court ruled against it and ruled that it was their sovereign land he said let them try to enforce it and sent troops in the dead of winter and drove them out of there homes, gathered them up and sent thousands of them on what is called TheTrail Of Tears. The soldiers didn’t even give them time to gather any belongings many didn’t even have coats or blankets or shoes. Thousands died on that March to Oklahoma mostly children and the old people. Populism and Nationalist gives people the right to be cruel to other races for example look what Trump did with family separation at the border and while at a rally in Texas declared himself to be a Nationalist. Nationalism is fake patriotism and the next step often leads to fascism , but at the bottom of it all is white supremacy that formed these movements. I would suggest that everyone look up Populist and Nationalist and it will give you a better understanding of what drives Trump supporters and their motives and goals.

    They may not be economically left behind, but they are ideologically left behind. When you strip away privilege, particularly systemic, cultural privilege on a multigenerational scale, equality feels like oppression. Whether we like it or not, a certain degree of xenophobia is hardwired into our DNA. It's a millennia old survival mechanism from a time when the other was a direct competitor for survival. Whether we like it or not, it takes work to quiet that instinct, which is why minorities are so easy to scapegoat and why it is so easy for a personality and a message like Trump and Trumpism, to tap into that fear and thrive. We are long passed the point as a society where fear of the other should be allowed to reach this kind of fever pitch, but then we look at the 2016 election, and realize just how easy it can be to backslide into these kinds of outmoded, self-destructive thought traps.

I understand that is what the article is saying but a better title should have been something like The Capitol Rioters Weren't from the Lower Classes. maybe even this is not as good but something that does not instantly denigrate the lower class should have been used for a title.

    It is not just about economic anxiety. It goes much deeper than that. These people feel and rightfully so there are on the losing side of the large changes in society. And don’t forget the role of men here. I think this is a topic that is not discussed enough. Men were and are traditionally seen as the provider of the family the ones who will earn the money for the family. But there a fewer and fewer jobs out there to be able to do that. So men have to find another role in life and inside their family. And many men are struggling with that. They feel emasculated. And I think as a man myself the expectations are getting higher and rightfully so. You have to take care of yourself. It isn’t acceptable any more that you are just like you are and everybody has to deal with it like it was in the Generations of my father and grandfather. You have to have a social and emotional intelligence to speak about your feelings and ask for help if you need it. You have to be the one remembering your mum’s birthday instead of your wife telling you. You have a role in raising the children and in taking care of your parents. And you have to deliver and step up your game to find a girlfriend or a wife. And this is a big deal too. And a source of much (sexual) frustration within men who don’t see how to do that. And we know that the feeling of weakness and Frustration combined with conspiracy theories trying to explain that you are not the problem but immigrants, Jews, women, Muslims and I don’t know who or what else, create violent behaviors. These people seem strong but there are clearly not. P.s. excuse my English. This is not my native language.

    That's a very shallow interpretation. Of _course_ it's an economic issue. Not the only issue, but to suggest otherwise is very ignorant. These are not people with great education, healthcare, democratic systems, and great opportunities. These are disgruntled people who have had those emotions and state exploited. Economics runs through all those issues. That they had a degree doesn't mean anything. Education is not schooling.
    The whole reason they're doing this is because they feel displaced, and had those feelings amplified and corrupted. Fascism spreads when the conditions are right for it, and doesn't when they're not.

  • @janedoe3915
    @janedoe3915 3 года назад +6

    It’s both issues. Some join these extremist groups due to economic and some r more driven by race. Often the 2 overlap. We know as income and wealth inequality increase w/in a society, we also see increases in violence, domestic extremism/terrorism, racism, xenophobia, misogyny, suicides, drug/alcohol abuse, maternal/infant mortality rate, associated psych/medical conditions, teen pregnancy, incarcerations, poverty, homelessness, polarization, societal unrest, and decreases in social mobility, life expectancy, math and literacy scores compared to other countries, and trust in government and each other to name a few. I have a masters degree, my brother has a 12th grade edu. I work a salaried job which requires a college degree while he works a union job w/a big defense company. He and I make about the same money but my job isn’t protected, I can be fired much more easily, I have no labor union to fight on behalf for my pay, benefits, safety, or protect me if my employer wants to fire me, I don’t get the nice pension he will get, and I have a large amount of student loans to pay off for many many years to come. This pisses me off! The whole sell on education to young ppl is that college, and the cost of it, will pay off. For some it does, but for many, it doesn’t when u compare pay between union and non-union, higher edu jobs and especially if compare to the Greatest Generation and Baby Boomer generation, most whom had no college, when college was debt-free if they did chose to go, and pay/pension was higher once adjusted for inflation and cost of living. It was normal for most M class families (the greatest generation and baby boomers) to need only 1 working adult to support 2 adults and more kids than most families have today (and this is a contributing factor to the decline of reproductive rate). It began declining for each generation after the boomers. Today, most M class families w/degrees need two working adults for fewer kids. Everyone is aware the economy has changed even if they don’t know exactly what has changed. It’s hard not to notice the all the monopolies and the increase of billionaires over this same period. The $ went from the M&L classes/small businesses up to the upper class and corporations. While some Trump supporters r working class/lower incomes, many r M class, some educated, who r able to afford the basics plus some but many still struggle w/the stresses, limitations, and anger of this capitalism for the few system which we currently have. If they listen to right politicians/media/foreign governments, they r told Dems r giving their money/jobs to black, brown ppl, and women. If they listen to the left politicians/media, at least some, will tell the truth about how income and wealth inequality have skyrocketed since 1980’s, though began increasing in the 70’s. Since 1980, republicans have controlled the house, senate, WH, and Supreme Court most of the time and this is what Republican policies do, more so than Dem policies. We saw the same dynamics and many of the same social issues the last time republicans controlled most of the government most of the time which was 1880-1932. That period took the Great Depression before voters were willing to vote for FDR, a progressive Dem, and Dem congress. They not only saved capitalism, greatly improved America for most M&L class families but also saved the world. The declining and low income and wealth inequality continued bc they voted Dems most of the time until 1980. The Great Depression was worldwide. M&L class Europeans were suffering as Americans were. However, Mussolini took control of Italy in a violent coup, I believe, and Hitler used his violent Storm Troopers to go after the opposition as Trump has done but was elected to take control of Germany around the same time period we elected FDR. Mussolini and Hitler were right-wing fascist who killed a lot of their own ppl, then started wars with other countries. Americans, after WWI, wanted no involvement w/WWII until it hit our shores. FDR did a great job preparing our armed forces knowing Hitler’s plan was to take control of Europe, Russia, UK, and then the US. Fdr quietly propped up the UK and Russia w/weapons, planes, etc until Japan attacked Hawaii which allowed the US to declare war on Japan and Germany. Income and wealth inequality today r similarly as high as the Great Depression period. To improve our country, the unfair economy for the M&L classes/small businesses, and decrease the many social issues (the signs of a sick society), we need to repeat what voters did in 1932, elect a progressive Dem and as many far-left progressives in congress as possible with eventually making the judiciary more reflective of the population, majority liberal. It’s important to understand it takes time to reverse all they’ve done since 70’s/80’s but if we stay the course, we will see and feel things improving. For an idea, it took 1933-1950 before the US hit the most ideal income/wealth inequality we’ve ever had in the US and 1970/80-2020 to reach the very high income and wealth inequality we have today. While we’ll never eliminate all racism, xenophobia, misogyny, extremism/terrorism, drug abuse, violence, suicides, etc, we will see these numbers decrease as the income and wealth inequality decrease.
