Rough cut lumber is the best smell for bees just dip the 1 inch of the end in wax and add the scent and you will attract them. Also adding a little bit of propolis to the top of the wood attracts them.
@@simplytopbarbeekeeping2107 I had two absconds land in my swarm traps. They didn't stop at the scions but you can't be there all the time. I had a colony move that I messed up and the confused bees found the scion. When I move a hive I leave a scion in that location to catch the returning bees. It was helpful for me. Slum-gum is the strainings when rendering wax from brood comb.
Just came across your channel a few days ago, great videos! I run a couple of topbars in NH along with my langstroth hives. I noticed your wearing a Dragonwear FR jacket, you wouldn’t happen to be a lineman would you?
@@simplytopbarbeekeeping2107 that’s awesome! I’m not quite ready to retire yet, but couldn’t agree more, it’s the best career out there!! Love my job and my bees!
@@bradbrown2168 because of the warm weather we’ve had in last half of February, and until recently, it wouldn’t surprise me if we didn’t see a swarm maybe in the last week of March. Just seems like we’re having a real early beginning this year.
Neat implementation of this. Would be cool to get a video of capturing a swarm with your new Russian Scion.
I agree it would be worth making it if I could just catch one.

Great work and looking foward to seeing you catch a swarm with it I will subscribe 👍🏼
Thank you very good advice.
I have seen videos of the Russian scio and i was going to put some out and see how it works. Will be watching
If you end up catching one, let me know how it worked and how you did it. I would like to make my next video of Bees hanging on it.
That also looks like a bird feeder. You could use it as such, then if it never attracts bees, you still got use from it :)
That would be considered repurposing wouldn’t it? lol
I have two scions like that in my yard. You should have something to attract them. I have wax, slum-gum, and a small piece of TempQueen on mine.
First question have they worked? Second question what is slum-gum?

Yes, retired and a beekeeper, two very rewarding careers!

@@simplytopbarbeekeeping2107 I made a swarm trap from a Sonotube. And another from a deep.
@@bradbrown2168 that is one thing I need to try, build and hang a swarm trap at another location.
