For someone with no pervious experience with the source material you hit all the nails on the head my man. 10 out of 10! This is a book series about feudalism, 20K years in the future. It's dirty, complicated, and dangerous where very few people have any real agency (even Paul, like you said) and where the fates of so many are controlled by very few. This is a time where heros and villains have little meaning beyond moment to moment and one's frame of reference, and where good and evil quickly fall into shades of grey if they ever existed at all; and it was written with those thoughts (and more) in mind. If you liked this, I can't wait for you to see Part 2. Great reaction!

Star wars was partially inspired im sure but Lucas's primary inspiration for the rebels vs the empire was the Vietcong vs the U.S.
Yes that is correct Frank Herbert did say George Lucas owned him dinner. Star Wars is though a age old fairy-tale of good winning over evil, interesting fact Star Wars is also set in the deep past, approx 125 million years ago. Rumour has it that Dagobah (Empire), is in fact what earth was like during the Jurassic period.
"Layered" is probably the best way to describe the complexities in the books, lots of history, subtlety, nuance, and intrigue.

For going into this unaware of the Dune lore, you were extremely perceptive of a lot of story beats people miss or get caught up on without deeper knowledge. Between the overt religious influences, the "unreliable narrator" aspect of his prescience, and the machinations of the greater powers, you were really keyed in. Can't wait to catch the Dune 2 react!
That is very true. Villeneuve does a good job of trying to acclimate you, but you do have to still pay great attention.. and he really does pick it up quick.

Except the 21/24 almost entirely ignores the ecology of Arrakis other than that it is a desert with a valuable resource (which does not damage the planet to harvest), so it is kinda disrespectful to Frank in that way 😅
I have not seen part two as yet, but was hoping the environmental aspects would be addressed in the second film. The books are nearly impossible to film given the breadth of his world building.

The prophesy was that an off-world Bene Gesserit mother and her young son would come and lead the Fremen to a green paradise. So, both Jessica and Paul together are the one, although Paul is seen as their savior.

The cast for this movie is so stacked because many actors greatly respect the director Denis Villenueve and were eager to help with this, his dream project.

Some additional non-spoiler lore :
* The story is pretty much set on our timeline roughly 24,000 years into the future. All the characters you see are humans, slightly evolved due to various significant events before Paul's saga. House Atriedes can actually trace their ancestry back to House Atreus of ancient Greek civilization & later Rome as well
* Earth is referred to as Terra and has been sadly lost to history after it was struck by a meteor and designated as a National park millennia after humans left it
* Roughly 10,000 years before Paul's story, there was a holy war against the "Thinking Machines" or basically AI, aftermath of which resulted in the complete explusion & abandonment of any artificial intelligent technology, machinery, weapons or equipment across the known universe. It was referred to as the "Butlerian Jihad" and paved the way for how human species would evolve & adapt without the luxury of thinking machines
* The Bene Gesserit sisterhood, Space Navigators/Guild & Mentats (human computers) were all developed and established in and around this turbulent time period resulting in the formation of the current feudal imperium with an Emperor and various houses with Dukes, Barons & Counts. Various historical accounts were lost, Religious & conservative beliefs started to become the norm. This is the reason why even though the story is set way ahead into the future, it still feels ancient
* Arrakis used to be an abundant Water planet until some unknown group before all the AI conflict period decided to infest it with sand trouts, which later evolved into the Giant Sand worms. The main source of Spice are sandworms & needless to say they are very vital to the ecology of Arrakis. Fremen only arrived on Arrakis only 3500/4000 years before Paul. They are descendants of the Zen-Sunni people, who were these nomadic tribes that constantly traveled to & from various planets until they were settled into Arrakis

You are the first person I have seen, that was unfamiliar to series, that has caught on to the fact that the thumper isn't only thing that kept that worm from killing him and Jessica.
You also keyed into the inaccuracy of Paul's visions, also being somewhat true. Jamis does teach him the unyielding nature of the desert in that duel; the Fremen are fierce, but also dogmatic and prideful. As a fan of the books and other adaptations, I really appreciate the way Denis handled this.
For having no knowledge of the lore you did a great job keeping up. It is a lot and I have a hard time being patient with some reactors due to the nature of this format means they miss a lot of important info. Best thing Franklin does on this channel with any movie is the pause to have insights and comments rather than just talking over possibly important scenes.

Oh man, I appreciate the praises. i thought that was very obvious about the thumper. Paul is just too special for that to be a mere coincidence. Even the way it was shot, it was almost like the worm was confused. Not knowing whether to consume him or worship him. I can't wait to find out tho. part two coming soon for sure.
And yes I want to know so much about Paul's vision and the fremen. This is the most I've ever been interested in a story's lore. I have loved every Denis movie I've seen. And this was no different, he's just so special. I really want to thank you for acknowledging the importance of pausing and conversing which you guys. Every now and then some inpatient butthead jumps in my comment section and says "You talk too much"... Which typically gets an eye roll from me followed by banishing them with the block button. @@FrankFreezy_ Paul isn’t a magical being with affinity for animals. Jamis’s thumper definitely saved Paul and Jessica. Sandworms only see them as a source of vibrations in their territory.
Also many viewers think that Paul could have used the Voice to control the sandworm that is false. The Voice only works on humans or beings of human origin like the Harkonnen’s spider pet.
Not shown in the original book or this movie but there is an all male sect of xenophobic mad scientists called the Bene Tlielax. Many of the Great House and the Spacing Guild will contract them to create biological agents or things based upon the human body. Because of their utter lack of morals the BT aren’t overly concerned where they get their raw materials Some fans believe the spider is what is left of Dr. Yuen’s wife Wanna.

Many will point out how the visions show possible futures but overlook that his visions are also not always literal but require correct interpretation. It is wild that he can learn from future events that never happen.
The Bene Gesserit train from childhood to control every nerve, every muscle fibre, every organ. If they are wounded they constrict the blood vessels around the injury. They fight with agility and speed. Hence poison transmutation is a skill that can be taught (even to men, but the B.G. has trouble controlling men so they don’t teach them).
They also study minutiae and learn to interpret tiny clues like the tremor of a lip, a droplet of sweat, a tiny change in voice pitch, to figure out if someone is lying or fearful or withholding something.
Voice is the study of how to use the perfect pitch and timbre and tone and delivery to make the hearer obey without thinking, or accept without questioning. It wouldn’t really sound any different to you, but Denis Villeneuve had to use some sort of audio effect to make viewers understand what’s happening. I prefer the way he handled it for Margot Fenring in part two.

A friend of mine was an extra in the David Lynch adaptation of Dune. He played a Fremen and a Harkonnen in the final battle. We used to joke with him that as he was running across the dunes, he shot himself.

@@FrankFreezy_ of course it has an audiobook. All scifi and fantasy has. The 25% of the selling is audible these days. But usually with these heavy writing like Dune we advise the paper because it’s a bit hard to follow on audio especially if you do something else during listening. You think the movie was layered? Now the books are more. And they have the tendency of jumping between POVs. Denis is doing now the next book Dune Messiah but! before that he will do an other legendary book Rendezvous with Rama from the author of 2001 Space odyssey. (You probably heard about that movie too from the older days) Arthur C. Clarke. So he is not playing easy. Before that was Bladerunner and that’s the adaptation of Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? He just does justice to legendary scifi books (the OG Bladerunner movie with Ridley Scott was the close adaptation). In the other hand Rebecca Ferguson does Silo in Apple TV another book, and next does Best Served Cold - Joe Abercrombie’s famous fantasy novel of the First Law series. Grim dark as Game of Thrones. And he personally writes the script for it. Now that audiobooks are hits. First Law is famous for the audiobook. As for example. Fantasy and sci-fi are usually good in audio. Because they are long. So better be. :)

You definitely won't be disappointed if you read the Dune series, I can promise you that much; I warmly recommend the six books Frank Hebert wrote, but just reading the first one is a transformative experience.

True ! Frank Herbert , author of the book in 1965, studied a lot the diverse religions and cultural facts of the Earth, especially middle eastern religions and Bouhdism, and desert people. He was a specialit in harsh condition survival.
I hope when Part 3 comes out, they should play the whole trilogy in theaters again in the leadup. Bout to rewatch the shit out of that and WB would make money for days

With 1 being kind of a two-part book anyway what with the time skip in the middle of it, it all worked out quite nicely that Dune and Dune Messiah make an even trilogy of cinema

The book is well worth reading, it goes into insane detail in your questions.
While running the capital, Duke Leto constantly gets into arguments with the native servants and bureaucrats because they've been conditioned to follow the Harkonnen customs; so every time Leto does something nice for them they're confused and frightened and he has to keep reminding them he's not a racist psychopath.
Also about their religion, basically thousands of years ago as Old Earth became less and less relevant to the Human Empire, the religions bled together and overlapped to the point they were different in name only, so the Empire decreed that the major religious leadership create a new umbrella-religion that simplifies everything so that disparate colonies have one less reason to genocide each other.
What resulted was the Orange-Catholic Bible, a synthesis of Buddhist and Abrahamic mythology. (The Fremen are described as having a more obscure Zen-Sunni doctrine)
Considering this story is all about religion as a psycho-political tool VS the reality of supernatural experience and destiny, this bit of worldbuilding perfectly sets up how those in power see the whole situation; to Paul and the others, OC Bible is just as old and well-respected and believed in as the King James Bible; to the Bene Gesserit and the Empire it's just another tool.
Far as Paul's visions, he concieves it as a sea of ever-changing dunes with possible futures in all directions; at any time he can see the path before him leading to the distance, and can catch a glimpse of the end of that future, but he can't always see the part between here and there. The more attuned he becomes, the more he can climb to the peak of his dune and see exactly what each path looks like in totality.
And the more he sees, the more he realizes he only really has two choices. As we see here, even when Jamis defies destiny, Paul still learns the Fremen ways and Jamis still taught him a valuable lesson. Even with a man fighting to the death, even if you can change a small detail here or there; even if you can slow it down; the core destiny is still inevitable. The choice is the choice--you follow through on it to its end, or you die in the desert and leave someone else to finish it.

Can't wait for you to watch Dune part 2! At some point you should watch Lawrence of Arabia. It came out in 1962 and heavily inspired Frank Herbert when he wrote the book--not just with the Middle Eastern influences, but the commentary on messiah figures and colonialism. Since you're so analytical about characters, I don't think the slower pace of an older film will be a hurdle to your enjoying it.

The whole movie displays repeating scenes, phrases, actions, and structures, whose meanings change and develop each time they are repeated.
The Harkonnens are imperialist Russia, hence why the Baron is named Vladimir. "Dune" was inspired by another book, "The Sabres of Paradise", that talks about Muslims from Caucasus and their struggles for freedom against Russia.

Paul was already gifted with visions (even though they were not totally accurate) then when he stepped off the ship onto the desert and exposed himself to spice, it opened his mind even further. That's why he was in that "trance."

The man watering the trees in the courtyard does not say "old dreams". He says the trees are sacred and then follows up with "All dream".

the weapons used to take out the spaceships, are some kind of shielded bomb. the shield protects the bomb from detonating against the spaceships shield instead it lets it slow enough to pass through the shield to hit the hull then detonate.
The price of a beer, the school for your children, the hatred against two men holding hands and the delay of a train; all of that, everything is policy.

30:48, House Atreides is a very honorable and respected house in the Landsraad. This respect is due to Duke Leto being a strong, honorable but compassionate leader. His inner circle Gurney, Thufir and Duncan have been with him for years. They are all fiercely loyal to Leto and love him like family and he holds them in equal regard. There is extensive lore explaining how and why these guys are so down for House Atreides. But suffice to say, where other houses throw money and threats at vassals to command obedience, House Atreides treats their vassal with respect and dignity.
31:58, Gurney is doing his job. You have to remember Duke Leto is a head of state like a president or prime minister. As such he has been a target for assassination attempts since he was 16 and took over House Atreides from his father. Furthermore, House Harkonnen and House Atreides have been fighting one another for thousands of year. For eighty of those years they ruled Arrakis and probably still have some sway with the local populace. So as a Swordmaster for House Atreides, Gurney isn't about to let any random person just roll up on his Duke like that. Kynes should have waited for permission to approach and touch Leto.

They do use guns, but guns are only useful against an unshielded target-However, shields cannot be borne in the Deep Desert, because any shielded object on the ground will draw a sandworm.
And lasers or lasguns can never be used against a shield because it will make a nuclear blast.

This part stuck with me for weeks after the film, because my takeaway from this man was that Paul was seeing and experiencing a possible future in which that man was his greatest friend, and unfortunately Paul had to choose to take the path forward that meant he had to kill that very same man before the future he saw could come to be. And Paul’s ‘loss of humanity’ you mentioned was kind of also that weight of mourning the companionship of a man he never got the chance to know but also experienced an entire life of friendship in that vision of him. Mourning the potential of what could have been. I guess that was my perspective of Paul saying things don’t always play out exactly as he sees them.
I’m obsessed with your comments on Paul’s lack of agency in his own story. It is one of my favorite themes in this story. The Bene Gesseret (forgot how to spell of) have planned bloodlines for centuries, so Paul’s agency has been usurped from his hands for centuries.

@@FrankFreezy_ definitely. I’m still making my way through the first book but one of my friends who’s read them told me Paul never really got over it. He cried when he killed Jamis and really thought of him as his friend even though irl they just met. Paul ended up providing for Jamis’ family but it’s not in the movies.

The culture of the Fremen resembling North Africa and Arab, the author of the books was trying to make a connection between outsiders and oil. The first book being published in 1965, the was a lot going on.

There are some great videos on YT about Dune that will flesh out the world and explain the things that, while left out, are still relevant, which is a lot. Quinn's Ideas is my favorite, but Nerd Cookies and The Lorebrarians also have great Dune content. Doc Sloan's Science Fiction Station does the deepest dive into Dune (he's got a literal PhD in Dune!). His videos can be long and a little dry so he's not for everyone. Lol But there's a lot to know about the Bene Gesserit, the Spacing Guild, Mentats, Arrakis, the Fremen, the life cycle of the sandworms, and so much more. It's too bad so much had to be left out. I mean, I get it, but one of the main points of the book, and the inspiration for it actually, was ecology, which goes unmentioned in the movies.
I also encourage you to check out the other adaptations of Dune. While the 1984 version has its issues, there's still a lot to like about it. Likewise with the 2000 miniseries, which of the three is the most faithful to the book. It's got its problems, too, mostly its low budget, which resulted in some pretty ridiculous costumes. The armor you mentioned loving when they land on Dune, it’s modeled for the helms to look like a hooded falcon because that’s the Atreides family crest (a falcon).
The Atreides symbol is a hawk, not a falcon.

Paul does not see the future, he sees possible futures and must choose between them a path, this is why the future is so confusing in his dreams. So he can make mistakes.
This movie is an absolute masterpiece, and somehow Part 2 surpasses it in every way. Can't wait for your reaction to it

They dont use guns because bullets are fast and cant penetrade their shields. Gurny says the slow blade penetrates the shield. Also cant use lazerguns because it will cause a chain reaction explosion going back to the shooter

If you love the lore, then the book will BLOW YOUR MIND, because there is still SO MUCH MORE than they could have ever fit in the film adaptions. The Dune novels (all 6) are extremely deep and filled with detail, nuance, philosophy, religion, politics, destiny/prescience, ecology, etc. The first novel came out in 1965, and is considered possibly the greatest sci fi novel of all time. You'd love it. Btw, George Lucas definitely borrowed a lot from Dune when he wrote Star Wars. Dune is the granddaddy.

The Fremen are native of the land because centuries have passed, the date od this Dune story is about 23 000 years in our future, the Fremen came from Earth originally and travel in space from planets to planets. They finally stopped on Arrakis and adapted to it. The empire is trillions of people over the galaxy coming from Earth, by the way Earth surface had been destroyed byatomics in an important war in space centuries ago....Ok ! Dune Saga is globally 22 books !
You've loved every Denis Villeneuve you've reacted to. Sci-fi from the 50s-70s were amazingly smart and many of the authors were well aware of global politics and many were ecologists as well. It's very political, people who complain about things being "woke" now wouldn't handle so much past works.
Also, this novel was a inspiration to Star Wars and Game of Thrones. "The Voice" and "The Force" are very similar and there's many more similarities.

I love how you this is doing Star Wars better than Star Wars. I read Dune in about 1975 or 76 I was about 16.
Then Star Wars came out and I recognized all the influences Dune head on that movie. I've been waiting since then for an adaptation that would carry the spirit of the book, this movie did.
You we're perfectly correct to bring politics and religion into your reaction. The book illustrates how politicians influence and sway people with propaganda and religion. It helped among other things to open my eyes to that fact. It literally helped to change my life.
Your reaction was a marvelous one catching the details and nuances of why things are happening behind the scenes. And I feel you understand what this story is about.
One thing aboutthe Bene Gesserit their powers aren't magical. In this universe human beings have a slight natural ability to see the future and the bread for that in producing the Kwisatz Haderach. In doing so those people were able to slightly see the future and helped shape the predictions of the Lisan al-Gaib. They knew what powers and abilities he would have, And they had some hints of the future from members of the sisterhood that saw into the future. They then designed Freeman religion and legend around that.
Sort of if I predicted a man would come that could have many balls floating in the air at the same time.
Then the jugular that I had hired arrived. And as I predicted he could make balls floating air It wasn't a prediction I designed it that way. The same with the Lisan al-Gaib.
My speculation is thatthe Bene Gesserit want to be able to control the spice and control Dune. So they planted this legend among the Fremen. It just didn't turn out quite as a planned The person that became the Lisan al-Gaib wasn't under their control.
i really recommend reading the book or listening to one of the newer audiobooks. there is a lot that they can't fit into two movies
Very well said, human history is full of instances where one society has lorded over another in every country of the world through out time, for resources wealth which unfortunate also included slavery. It even takes place now, and continues in to era of DUNE 8,000 years in the future. Interesting fact, in this era humans reverted back to analogue technology after the AI wars of 5,000 years before. After this war which lasted 30 years, all AI was banished, or destroyed. The reason why weapons seem ancient is because swords and stabbing weapons dont run out of ammo, although there are lazar and projectile weapons. DUNE is about power. Paul and his Mother are shaping the future of Arrakis, and for that matter the whole of the universe.
I read this in the early '70s and I've always felt that this is Star Wars for adults. No offense to Star Wars fans.

Gonna be real here mate. I've watched many Dune reactions. Most really good, but your reaction shows you have read between the lines more than any of those reactors. Well done. Science fiction is, I believe, the best genre, as all ideas are allowed and it can reflect our cultures and beliefs and our technology, or it can contradict them. Star Wars is more fantasy but true sci-fi is great. It gets you thinking and questioning and sparks our imagination. Look to Blade Runner 1982. We were not spoon-fed in either film and it rewards rewatches like all Christopher Nolan or David Fincher films and Villeneuve films. Welcome to the best genre in books and film.

Big difference with the book here with Liet Kines, imperial ecologist. In the book it is a man, married to a fremen woman, and Chani IS THE DAUGHTER OF LIET KINES !!! this is why she's special in the book. The movie completely ignored this. That's a pity.

Oh, this story is chock-full of politics and political intrigues and maneuvering and it's one of the very compelling elements about the book and this adaptation. Spice on Arrakis is basically oil in the Middle East and the lengths that nations will go to to secure the resources and dominate the people to that end. And I guess it's a pretty sadly accurate depiction of the human condition that the same stuff is going on so far in the future, and on a galactic scale.
Oh, it's possible that both Dune Part 1 and Dune Part 2 will get a short re-release just before the Oscars. The first one won six and I imagine there will be several nominations for Part 2 as well, so maybe you'll get your theater experience. Go IMAX if you can. I couldn't, but even in a basic theater the sound design really shines.
And that's one part of the lore that I loved, the conflict over the spice almost feel personal because like you said is a reflection of Our Own issues.
